I recently read the first three Halo books and have become hooked on them so I intend to buy and read the rest. Simple question then, is it worth getting the Halo Encyclopedia too?
Posted by: ODST27 Don't bother wasting your money. It was riddled with errors, inconstancies,
Unless there are points when it truly contradicts itself, it's not really inconsistency, it's basically retconning. Self-contradiction is possible; I don't know for sure, because I'm not actually that far into the Encyclopedia. However, that's really the only kind of "inconsistency" that can happen. All contradictions of old canon can be regarded as retcons.
old art, lines that are word-for-word from Halopedia,
Could it be that people have copied the Halopedia word-for-word from the Encyclopedia? Or that the Encyclopedia and the Halopedia are taking information word-for-word from the same sources?
and already outdated info (ie. no Halo 3 ODST info, Halo Legends info, etc.).
First, there is some ODST info in there; that's why there's a two-page spread devoted to Buck's team. There isn't a lot of ODST info, and I will agree that the Encyclopedia is more than outdated already; it lacks info from Legends, Helljumper, Blood Line, Greg Bear's forthcoming Forerunner trilogy, and, of course, Reach. Also, I'm not entirely sure how much stuff out of Evolutions is covered; I'm a bit disappointed in myself that I haven't finished that yet either, but other things have to take priority.
Halopedia might be riddled with errors too, but at least it's free :/
That's like saying "This food may be poisoned, but at least it's free." Like I said earlier, unless there are points where the Encyclopedia has INTERNAL contradictions (which is fully possible; as I said before, I haven't been through the whole thing, so I don't know for sure), we MUST treat the information within it as being 100% accurate.
