I am not trying to promote any kind of weapon favoritism, but I did some test to compare the energy sword to the shotgun.
I placed a character in a map with a sword facing an opponent with a shotgun. I moved the sword player just close enough to make the reticule turn red, then had him stop. I then took the shotgun player and shot the player with a sword from that range. I got these results after 10 tries:
Highest amount of shots to kill: 8
Lowest amount of shots to kill:4
Average amount of shots to kill: 5.6
I have no problem with the sword, and I think it is a fairly decent weapon as far as fairness and balance goes. The shotgun, however, is incredibly underpowered. In halo 1 you could kill someone with a shotgun from that distance no problem with one shot, but now it would take you at least 4 shots with it to kill a guy. Again, not trying to start a riot here, just let me know what you think.

2 RepliesThe shotgun is no where near underpowered I use it over the sword...and 4/5 the sword guy eats it. If you know the sword lunge distance and shoot right as the other guy will be pulling his trigger you get and instant shottie kill on the sword carrier.

1 ReplyHalo 2 is the only game where the shotgun isn't a shotgun, which really aggravates many people, including myself. WTF is up with Bungie powering it down SO much!? I mean, it was perfectly balanced, damage, accuracy, rate of fire, and distance. Even on LAN the shotgun is STILL weak at close range. I find it quite increduluos that there is a logical and rational reason to weaken the Shotgun so much. [Edited on 1/13/2007]

i belive the shotgun is more effective than the sword the closser it is. cause you can shoot down a person flying towards you if your good enough.

Wow i read your 5 questions they are wicked funny but heres one 4 you How do the, stay off the grass signs get there?

What's to keep the sword wielder from waiting within lunging range and until the shotgun fires first? It takes an average of 5.6 shots so the sword wielder waits between the shots to lunge. Sword > shotgun Or the shotgun wielder waits for the sword to lunge before he fires a single shot to kill him mid-lunge. shotgun > Sword Depending on who plays smarter in this situation you can have a standoff. Nobody lunges or pulls the trigger until one player makes the first move. The victor would depend on host and who can get the drop on each other from behind or around a corner. So I say the sword wins because of it's range. [Edited on 1/14/2007]

I guess the tricky thing is is that the shotgun is fairly balanced with other weapons, just not it's counterpart, in my opinion. So if we were to tweak the shotgun, we would have to tweak the other weapons too because of shotguns new dominance. I just remember one time I had a shotgun following a guy with a sword. He didn't notice me, so I tried to get close enough for a melee. I was too far, and I had no grenades, so I said to myself "Self, why don't I just use my close range weapon to shoot him in the back." I shoot. He turns around. I shoot again. He moves closer. I shoot again, he still hasn't swung. I shoot again. He lunges and kills me. (I have no shotgun skills at all) [Edited on 1/14/2007]

a normal shotgun could kill a bird from ages away, but this is the future, who knows?
Posted by: PyroPredator At point blank and aimed for the head the shotgun will deal with any opponent. You just have to be skilled enough to use it right.
This is coming from someone who thinks it's better to aim for the head with a shotgun?

Shotguns are not close range weapons. Effective range for a shot gun is 5 to 35 yard. Slugs are up to 250. Only in video games are they like that.
-
Even brutes can be finish off with it.

You could snipe with an H1 shotty. It was ridiculous.
-
you'd better kill the sword guy with one shot or it's goodnight..i find pulling back when you shoot with the shotgun is more powerful check it out.

iv been in a sword/shotgun sitioun all the time and........the shot gun always loses
Posted by: XGeneral2000 The shotgun will theoretically win against the sword in an ideal situation, due to the fact that the person holding the shotgun will be able to kill the person holding the sword as he lunges. However, the sword is simply easier to use-the shotgun requires more skill and strategy to use properly.
Posted by: II ParAnOia II Yes in the nads of the right person the shotgun is better than the sword, the problem is, most people are not that good with the shottie
I hope you meant "hands."
The shotgun doesn't take any more skill but lower latency.
Posted by: xXBeastWithinXx You have to be point blank and pull off a head shot for the shotgun to work well, and the energy sword is the worst weapon as far as fairness goes! Whoever has it wins most of the time!
All of your post is made of fail and wrong.

4 shizzle

Shottie vs Sword. Shottie better have host.
-
different strokes for different folks.... I tend to prefer the shotgun...but thats just me
-
the shotgun is a good anti-sword weapon, if you shoot them as they lunge they die and there lifeless corpse flies right over you and there all like OMG WTF!?!?! I got pawnzored and stuff.
-
The shotgun works well when you use it right. Shoot>melee hit ftw. Usually kills them unless they have an overshield, or they hack Halo....
-
Yeah the shotgun is the Energy sword's only weakness when up close. Except for sniper wielding nosecopping people lol
-
If you have host, then shotty is a lot better, if you don't, shotty sucks
-
Shotgun is better point blank. Otherwise sword dominates.
-
You have to be extremely close to someone before pulling the trigger in order to do serious damage. I don't think Bungie ever managed to make a decent shotgun model for Halos 1 or 2, but I believe that the Halo 1 model was still the better out of the two, because of its more destructive power.
