I know im a tiny bit late with this, but seriously, why?
The idea of Halloween is to honour the dead, which is done normally by dressing up as scary things and trick-or-treating. But spacemen, ballerinas and clowns are not scary (unless you are wierd or had some bad childhood experiences)!
Seriously, why do you dress up as things that aren't scary? Is it just for the fun? Or is it that you are scared of those things and normal people aren't?
warning: this is not intended as a cultural flame war.

Many cultures have their own days to honor the dead.

My friends and I wore scary costumes and went to person 1's house. we stayeed there and scared people. person 1 would go up on the roof and act wierd. I would stand in front with a scary mask and stand absolutly still, when people came by, they would stare, then I would say "please follow along the path and try not to be scared. then person 3 would hide in the bushes nearby wearing a hickey mask. he would be in a place where you couldn't see him, and after the people got candy and though that it was over, he would jump out, scream, and shake a beer can filled with coins. we scared so many people, I'm not kidding you, a big group came by and the next thing they knew, they were running down the street screaming. Maybe I should answer your question with a question: How is dressing up as a scary serial-killer supposed to honour the dead in the first place? No matter what, it doesn't make sense.

origionally it was called All Hallows Eve. Actually, I don't know what the Celts first called it, but that's the entemology in english. It was about honoring the dead. It had some thing to do with the end of the harvest or replanting seeds too. Life and death and crops are intertwined in those cultures. I don't dress up. I take the neighborhood sex offender, and put them on a leash, and walk them near small children.

Nice generalization. Little kids don't dress up in scary costumes because they're not allowed to. Or they probably don't understand the concept of a "scary costume" and just go as whatever they're into then. I thinks the celebration is about having fun, not trying to be scary. i don't dress up as anything. I never thought any costume or idea I saw on Halloween was ever scary. I actually might lack the mental function called fear. At least in illogical situations.
