There is no denying Cortana loved the chief. If you don't agree play halo 4 ...
She always wanted to touch him, she was more loyal to him than mankind (negating any she was just a robot claim), she was scared of death but died anyway for chief's sake., she stayed with him etc...
that's textbook love to me.
She was an AI yes, but she was a copy of a brain, and our brains are the ones that manage feelings.
but how do you think she loved the chief as lovers, or as friends?

BestSpartan117, So you understand. I am a computer network and information programmer, I work in the feild of information technology and I am also a fan of Isaac Asimov. not to denigrate your opinon on the subject but before you start speaking about cortana as a person with emotion, please understand that Cortana is a robot and in science fiction most if not all writter follow the basic law of robotics 1.A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2.A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

hello PHYNIX CALL Paragraphs are your friends -The english language
Posted by: PHYNIX CALL hello again Darthbill99, I found your recent reply interesting even more then the first reply. So you are of the opinion that if you break everything down to it simplest basic operation that even the human brain is nothing more then a set in chemical instrutctions? first I am going to ask you,do you know about how materials interact with their enviroment( IE how matter tranform from one state to another, Soild to liquid to gass and the final state energy))The human brain experiences change physically every time an emotion is experience, thus changing how electrical impulse flow through the brain. It is because of this physical change we grow and adapt to our enviroment, unlike a computer program which can only follow it set programming. The human brain react to more then situation then information presented to it in a logical manner. for this example, if you hurt your person vie a cut or bruse you can hurt another part of your body to deflect the sensation of pain. The reason is because unlike a computer program you brain process multitude of stimuli to ajust the electrical impulse sent to it. It does not follow a logical path( ie point one to two and so on) like a computer program. This is the base instinct of feeling and emotion which a computer program can never know or experience. It can emulate the event and copy a reaction the same as the human brain but it is not physically change by the event unlike the human brain. A computer program just follow it instruction. Now to borrow a line from Startrek ( you Humans are so illogical sometimes, it make me wonder how you survived at all).
Hello PHYNIX CALL | While I find your headcanon ridiculous, blind and idiotic.Let's just take it seriously for a moment. For the simple fact that Cortana acted as a human being in your own freaking eyes eyes. She ignored the comand of "serve humanity", she had independant toughts, she cared for the chief, she sacrificed for him, she wanted to touch him, she felt emotions, she showed care etc, etc, etc. Second fact is that you are trying to compare limited technology from today when halo is a fantasy game. There is something called artistic license. The idea of an AI acting as a human isn't as far fetched as slip-space, halos, teleporters etc. google "chakas" for an use on the halo universe.... Third comparing Real Life present to a fictional future to say that the later is impossible is nothing short of laughable.
Posted by: PHYNIX CALL Hello BestSpartan117, Well I find your logic a little narrow minded, let say for this argument that Cortana does have real feelings and that the law of reality can exsist in a pure digital world. To what end do you blur the reality between fact and fiction? No matter how complex the computer program is. It is no more then a series of information instructions. From your argument that is saying that music notation is a feeling, thinking being. While music can inspire emotion, and certainly musicians can become attached to a music peice. The music itself is just a set of instructions. an interactive program (AI) is neat but in the end it is just notes on paper and has no feelings. Since the Ai is a set of instruction It can only follow is core instructions. To say Cortana has feeling is like say my computer feels hurt every time I turn the power off.
[Edited on 12.18.2012 12:20 PM PST]
Posted by: PHYNIX CALL To answer your question about the Upgrade to cortana, you find out during the book first strike about her having to upgrade while fight the rouge Ai on board the Ascendant Justice. Doctor halsey discovered the change to Cortana during the book and makes note of it. which is the clip on the halo 4 level.
Ah yes, that upgrade. That just allowed her to copy herself if I recall correctly, she likely used that when she swarmed the Didact's ship at the end with clones. I don't recall anything about it staving off rampancy, especially considering how unstable using it makes her. And while Halsey's clip certainly seemed to foreshadow a cure for Cortana's rampancy it must have just been there to give the player and Chief hope, but didn't pan out. As for the part of your post that I didn't quote and your reply to that other guy, if you break any system down far enough it follows a set of rules and instructions that dictate everything about it. Whether you'r brain is human or mechanical at it's core everything is ultimately dictated by a basic chemistry and physics, or in an AI, an emulation of these same rules. How then is it any different? reguardless of how they are made, both a living brain and a Smart AI follow the same rules, and so act the same. Obviously AI's aren't completely identical to a human mind, as they are far smarter and quicker thinking, plus they exist as pure data, but the core rules of how they think and act and feel, are all human.
Posted by: haloplayer2kill I think she does love the chief....but not in a romantic sense. More like a motherly sort of love. After all she is a creation from the brain of Dr. Hasley, who was a mother figure to the spartans.
Affection? Definitely Yes. Romantic? Not so sure.

She is a copy of a brain (halsey's). Our feelings are in our brain ergo her feeligs were genuine.
Posted by: PHYNIX CALL The answer is No, first of Cortana is a program and there for not capable of show true emotion. Yes her programming is model on the same process as Dr. Halsey's brain but she is a computer program. A logical thinking set of instruction. It is not capable of expressing emotion like a human being. human emotion are a chemical reaction to stimuli. A computer program can simulate emotion but can not express what it is to feel emotion. in halo four she tells you that she can give you 40,000 reason why the sun light on requiem is artifical but she will never know what it is to feel the sun on her face. the thing I find messed up is that cortana is going rampant at all. She got a new version of Ai matrix on Halo in the first game, though the novel her core programming got a major upgrade which solved her reampency. Dr.Halsey mention this fact in a radio burst in level one of halo 4. the kicker is will they make cortana come out of the regenerator as a human in halo 5?
If you think Cortana can't feel emotion than you clearly haven't payed any attention at all. Every aspect of the human brain is a chemical process, and she is in essence an emulation of those chemical processes. Everything within the human brain is reproduced digitally and no less legitimately within Cortana's programming. And I've read all the books btw, and never does Cortana recieve an upgrade that solved her rampancy. What Halsey was saying in the radio burst in Halo 4 was speculation. It sounded very foreshadowy, but clearly Cortana went rampant anyway. Also, what the hell is the regenerator? Do you mean the Composer? because that got blown up. It is possible that some of her copies went into it, and were sent through the portal with the composed humans and the Didact, but that's just speculation, and frankly I hope she stays dead. Bringing her back would ruin the emotional impact of Halo 4's ending.

I've kind of got the impression that Chief is almost like a big brother to a younger sister, with Cortana being like a motherly figure to him, what with her being almost another Dr. Halsey.

Not romantic, but a deep bond of friendship/comradeship from fighting together for so long.
-
She wanted to touch him..... Friends dont want to touch you so yeah....

I believe they saw eachother in a romantic way, but they also knew the limitations of her being an AI.

Any lady would like a man that can cook.

I don't think the Chief sees Cortana in a romantic sense. I think he sees Cortana as more of a mother like figure. I do remember her image replacing his actual mother in one of those halo 4 trailers, when John flashbacks. And personally i don't think Cortana sees John as her lover, but then again some people can interpret her relationship with him as a romantic one. After all, i can see why they think so.
Posted by: ROBERTO jh
Posted by: TheSpiderChief Which makes me think that, if she really isn't dead as some people claim, then he is going to stop at nothing to find her again in Halo 5.
Halo 5: The Search for Cortana?
I definitely wouldn't be buying that.
