What is the best kind of hammer for self defence?
So yeah, quite soon I'm moving to an area that's pretty rough. Hopefully, and probably, we'll get no trouble. But by the off chance someone breaks into my house I've decided my defence weapon of choice. A hammer
Reasons for this choice
Unless you make a full blown hit to the head it's pretty hard to kill someone with.
It's good for knocking someone out and getting them arrested.
Good for disarming. I'm sure a full power blow to the arm will make someone drop a knife
Fear factor. I know for a fact that if I had a measly kitchen knife, someone holding a mallet ready to attack would scare me.
Also, guns are illegal here, so please don't go on about them.
So my question, what's the best hammer for defence? A simple rubber mallet? A ball pein hammer?

I actually have a 7 iron (you can guess why) for home defense. I think golf clubs are brilliant. It's like a blade/blunt weapon hybrid at the end of a easily swung shaft. It's an elegant melee weapon in an age of heavy cumbersome clubs.

Not wanting to kill someone is fine, but you need to be prepared to if they are as well. There are some desperate, crazy people out there.

A hammer can kill pretty easily. Better solution: Wooden Louisville slugger, duct taped to minimize breaking bones. Seriously, its intimidating, has reach, and most can handle it, cheap and easy to conceal in your home.
