Would I be better off going with Halo 1 or 2?

I finally have a PC that's capable of playing some games. I'd like to play some Halo multiplayer. Am I better off going with Halo 1 or Halo 2?

  • If you are able of doing so, get both. I did, and it was one of the better buys I've gotten. Past tense seeing that my computer after so many years of usage and being handed down can no longer properly play the games.

  •
Posted by: Omicron 147 Hm... Personally, I'd say 2. But you'd need to find people who own the game or an online community that frequently plays. I recently bought Vista, and beside all the installation difficulties that I'm encountering, I prefer the maps and gameplay, as well as being able to play as an Elite. However, I'm concerned that I mightn't be able to find anyone to play with. I wouldn't know about CE. I bought the Anniversary edition on xbox, but only for the campaign.
Tell me your kidding. Halo PC has a larger ammount of people playing, better maps and custom maps, and better gamemodes.

  •
Posted by: wazups2xs Both Halo 1 and 2 have terrible mouse acceleration so I can't play either of them.
You can do what Btcc said (though I keep vsync on, as massive horizontal tearing screws me up far more than a constant 75 FPS does), or you can automate that process by creating a CFG file in your Halo directory with the text "mouse_acceleration 0" and add the command line argument "-exec mouse.cfg" to your Halo shortcut.

  •
Posted by: wazups2xs Both Halo 1 and 2 have terrible mouse acceleration so I can't play either of them.
You can disable it with Halo 1. Console command, mouse_acceleration 0. Any other mouse issues are probably caused by having vsync enabled, so turn it off. [Edited on 11.03.2012 3:57 PM PDT]

That said, i do see the same arguments between users pop up every now and again..still good reads though.

  •
Posted by: I RaveN I Yes, as games get older they lose their population. You read that correctly, however both quotes were from different posts.
... What? Yes, I quoted you from a previous post... You said you were talking specifically about Halo Custom Edition 1.00 when in reality you said "... in general..." I'm really not trying to be mean here but you seem to be derping right now. You're not making any sense. I don't even know how to respond.
Also, as we've had this argument a hundred times over h2v, a couple hundred people playing a game (especially when a free version is available easily and it doesn't require specs) isn't exactly impressive.
... Yes, I agree. Did you think I didn't agree with this? I was talking about Halo: Combat Evolved/Custom Edition's population being stronger than you're letting on and how Halo 2 Vista's is in the crapper. Unless you're talking about Halo Custom Edition... In that case you're being misleading again by saying "a couple hundred people". Custom Edition has around 2,000 players on it normally which is much higher than 200 (a couple hundred). Of course it's not going to be as high in number as a brand new game. It's 9 years old. [Edited on 10.21.2012 2:32 PM PDT]

Most people, even people who aren't using a crack, play 1.00 on Custom Edition. You made it seem as though hardly anyone plays it anymore when that's not true. You also don't need to use a crack to play 1.00 anymore with version changer. Edit: I noticed something while reading over what you said originally. (It's been a while)
Also, there's hardly any people on in general compared to a year or two ago.
You said in general which suggests you were talking about across the board. If you didn't mean across all versions, you chose your words poorly.
Yes, as games get older they lose their population. You read that correctly, however both quotes were from different posts. Si no se habla espanol tan bueno para comunicar con mexicanos, va a estar aburrido. Also, as we've had this argument a hundred times over h2v, a couple hundred people playing a game (especially when a free version is available easily and it doesn't require specs) isn't exactly impressive. Seeing as you need proprietary hardware and $60 for the game to play newer games on console which have upwards of 250,000 players online at any given time.

1.09 seems to be mostly modded, zombies or other boring overplayed modes anyway. But then i haven't had the time to check out 1.00...or any game for that matter.

  • Halo PC Pros: *expanded settings vertical and horizontal sensitivities, music and game sound adjustment, turning on/off effects, shadows, stable no-v sync, checkpoint menu *modding friendly Custom Edition, map editor SparkEdit, basic user friendly modding program HMT, advanced user friendly modding program Eschaton, scenario modding, damage modding, individual health modding, don't have to mod the maps directly (so no need to back up default maps), doesn't give you files are missing prompt if you delete stuff from the maps folder, can mod bipeds without the game screwing up, can mod AI in-depth, very thorough in every aspect of modding *easy backup (maps, profiles, checkpoints) *FoV adjustment (external) *anti-aliasing (external) *Halo PC dev trainer (external) *press X to enter vehicle fixed Cons: *fall barrier seems to be set higher than NTSC Xbox version (IIRC) *no creating checkpoints (excluding Custom Edition, which has 'game_save') *juggling weapons isn't easy (no changing hold E to press E) *some modders make their tags in maps impossible to decipher Halo 2 Vista Pros: better graphics (must select high setting for 'level of detail' to see it), global difficulty management (through matg), basic modding (Gravemind, Mr. Mohawk) Cons: barely any advancement in the settings, crap programs (modding, dev trainer, etc.), even smaller FoV, horrible performance, AI modding is -blam!-, lagging regardless of your computer's efficiency, unstable, no sword flying or super jumping in campaign, still no skull menu, buggy controls (can't crouch when moving, can't get allies out of vehicle when it's hold E, non-functioning Spectre seats for allies), Xbox modding vastly superior I don't know about Halo 2 Vista MP though.
Posted by: Dr Syx It's not really that important to me that the other people in the game speak English. I didn't understand it back then (so they ganged up on me because I didn't reply :P) but now I know they meant good game, thank you, etc. [Edited on 10.07.2012 3:02 PM PDT]

"hardly people on in general" isn't exactly a very accurate way to put it. I'd also like to point out that while I was playing, I ran into an old friend (who speaks English). I also ran into around 5 other people speaking perfect English accusing me of being a hacker. It's not really that important to me that the other people in the game speak English. Back when most the population did speak it they didn't have anything of importance to say other than act like a douche anyway. Now they're just saying it in another language.

  • You'd be better off with a newer game, tbh. H2V is basically dead now, even to me, and I'm one of the people that was like "omg<3h2vnevergonnadiebaylifeand-blam!-". CE is basically inhabited by Columbian/Mexican pirates, so have fun finding someone who play English. Also, I've noticed there's hardly any 1.09 servers anymore (the updated version) and most servers are run on 1.00-1.03 (versions that are the most common cracked copies, because most of the people who do don't realize that after 1.0?8? the cd check was removed). Also, there's hardly any people on in general compared to a year or two ago.
Posted by: Btcc22
Posted by: Wilis_kid Halo PC 30fps cap but that's not so bad.
The only cap I can think of is vsync if you force the game to run at an unsupported resolution via the vidmode option. However, if you have nVidia card, you can override this in the control panel. I think there's a tool that can do it for ATi/AMD cards too but I'm not entirely sure. If HPC had an FPS cap, I would not be playing it. The mouse is horribly unresponsible if it's capped and not much better until you disable the acceleration in-game (mouse_acceleration 0).
Yeah i just did a check again for Asraios. From my memory, i had an issue where it appeared to be that the game was running at 30fps despite being over that (60 for me). This made it appear the enemies etc were often "teleporting" to where they were going, kind of an artificial lag. Now i just went back to try and record the issue i had and funnily enough, it's nowhere near as bad as i remember (No Vysnc though the game caps at 60fps anyway) though the Elite i was recording did skip a tiny bit but not as bad as i make it out to be in the first paragraph of this post. For now i'll just edit the other post. No idea why it did it the last time i used over 60fps but im guessing it must have been a glitch.

(I was going to say this before remembering your name was Wilis_kid on here... Just sayin') If you set it to VSync or No VSync you get 60+... Have you been playing on locked 30FPS this entire time without realizing there were other options in the menu? :D
Haha xD Well if i uncheck the framerate then i get artificial lag and everything seems like it's skipping frames. It's odd, i'll make a video on it shortly.
