100 roman standered legionaries Vs 100 riot police .... who wins?
Legionarie weaons:
2x "pilum" = Spear (ONE use ONLY weapon)
1x "gladius" = short sword
and 1x "pugio" = dagger
Riot police weapons:
1 polycarbonate resin batton
1x hand taser (5 second stun, 50 uses max)
1x pepper spray (1 min stun if direct to face, 5 uses max)
10x plastic cable tie handcuffs
no tear-gas, water-cannons, archers or trebuchets allowed etc.

Roman Legion. Their weaponry is actually lethal.
-
Legion because 300 was a good movie.

KEVLAR claimed to be stab-proof, but it proved only to be bullet-proof. The Romans would be worn down and eventually killed, I believe, although the Riot Police' numbers wouldn't be much better at the end.
-
Well, the police have no lethal weapons. And tasers won't do anything to their shields. You'd have to land a hit on their armour to have any affect. If the police had their tear gas, then they could possibly break up the Roman formation. When a Legion's formation is broken, a legionnaire is a lot less effective, and the riot police are trained to bludgeon their way through masses of disorganized people. Or they would just call for backup, and SWAT would show up packing MP5s.
Posted by: monitor 16807 Without a military leader to lead the legionaries, the police win. Edit: Modern day people area lot taller and muscular than ancient Romans.
Actually, I believe it was a requirement for legionaries to be 6' or taller at one point during the Empire. Hmmm... pointy sharp things vs immobilization weapons.
-
The police would run away on sight and get routed by the Romans.
Posted by: Fender 159 This, like alot of factors take place. People in the roman ages were more savage (At least, I see them that way), whereas people nowadays are more sissies.
I have no doubt that the riot police would fight like hell for their lives, and well, maybe, I just think that they're not well-suited for such an engagement.
Posted by: BROWN HAWK I think another point of contention is the mind-set of both sides. What kind of riot police are trained against steel-armored and steel-bearing warriors? Whereas the Romans were trained for bloody war. Melee fighting, where the other faction has swords and spears and archers. I think the Romans would have the advantage where battle psychology is concerned.
This, like alot of factors take place. Romans would obliterate police.
-
lol, the Riot Police don't have shields or lethal weapons. I think they're -blam!-.

Body armor is apparently very bad against edged weapons. It's designed to disperse the force of a bullet's impact so as to prevent penetration, which doesn't work with a knife. Anyhow, Riot Police win. Taser the Romans, crush windpipe with baton, repeat.
I didn't know that, thanks for telling me. Also, it would be nice to know in which context they are fighting. Is it one group attacking the other? Or is it more like a stadium fight?
Think of it as both forces charging toward one another in formation.
Posted by: Fender 159 I don't know. Both have their pros and cons. Romans, have actual weapons, but the police have stab resistant armor. Police have no actual weapons, but the romans have less armor.
Stab-plating is tested with ice-picks, and they don't offer complete resistance. Good, strong stab will go through, maybe not all the way, but several millimeters at the least. Plus, Roman swords would probably be much more lethal than an ice-pick, especially in the hands of a trained soldier. Plus, they're total soldiers/warriors. I'm not familiar with riot police training or capabilities, but I don't think that their batons could be very effective against the Roman's armor plating. Plus, they're not the average civilians, they could take a hit outside of the armor. I think they'd be most susceptible to pepper-spray and maybe tasers. But the riot police are fairly vulnerable, I'd think. I think the Romans would win. [Edited on 09.30.2012 5:41 PM PDT]
Posted by: theHurtfulTurkey Why don't the riot police have shields or guns?
Any self respecting riot police would be backed by gas grenades and riot shotguns.

Legion because you've clearly stacked it against the police.

The riot police are beyond -blam!- without tear gas or guns.
