Opinions, I love em, but for every opinion out there, there are at least two that are null and void. People commonly use that expression "your opinion is null and void" but what exactly does it mean. There are these things called false facts where you can say something factual and it is not true, for example: my xbox is green. That is a false fact because in reality it is black, but it is not an opinion because it is not a thought. So we have false facts but how does an opinion become false?
I only ever use the expression when someones logic behind their opinion is nonsensical and contradictory. What about you?
-
An opinion cannot be false. It can only be illogical.
-
Every opinion is based on the holders knowledge, understanding, their experience, their memories, their conclusions, their assumptions, their beliefs, their perception and interpretation of reality. It is then also dependent on how well they can express it to others and how well those others can grasp the explanation of the holder's opinion. Based on all of that, can't we agree that ALL opinions are subjective and have a good potential to be (in the OP's words) "null and void"?
-
My xbox is white so your opinion is null and void.
-
Depends on the subject being discussed. If it's something moral/personal related it can't really be null and void. "I think green is an ugly color"- You can't really refute that. However if it's something like "I think solar energy is more important than fossil fuels" you can actually back that up with some type of proof. [Edited on 09.23.2012 9:23 AM PDT]
Posted by: St Major Dan Based on facts which are incorrect? E.g. I don't like MJ because he raped little boys.
Valid reasoning. I would have said it was when a person stating an opinion refuses to hear all the facts and instead believes based on ignorance. So pretty much the same thing.
-
Opinions can not be false, even if they are build around false facts. Everyone is entitled to what they believe in. The saying "your opinion is null and void." is just a statement one uses when they are too butthurt to respect another person's beliefs. For example, if I were to say that I believe Toyota makes the best cars, someone that believes that Hondas are superior can say my opinion is null and void.
-
An opinion made on ignorance and hate.
Posted by: St Major Dan Based on facts which are incorrect? E.g. I don't like MJ because he raped little boys.
yeah that makes sense.

Opinions based on fake facts.

Well, if it has anything to do with something in Germany being 0, then it is null. If it has something to do with Java script, its void.

Your opinion disagrees with mine? It must be wrong then, because we're on the internet!

If you disagree with me then your opinion is null and void.
