Reverse Mail Sack.

Okay, Bungie Community. You asked for the spotlight. Don't melt in its rays. Below are questions submitted by the developers who spend as much time wondering about you as you do about them. Suggested Guidelines: Please post in this thread only once. Failure to honor this request will result in forfeiture of your privilege to participate (or worse). I would recommend only answering the questions that really speak to you. Don't force this. I'll be looking for humor or sage wisdom that could benefit us all. And, more than a sentence or two will be heavily edited or ignored completely. No monologing. Have a ball! Oh, and QUOTE the questions you are answering. The zombie apocalypse is upon us. Most of humanity has already fallen to the hordes of flesh-eaters. You have survived because of your ingenuity, cat-like reflexes, and dashing good looks. As you travel in search of food, you find a grizzled old man who offers to give you a powerful weapon. Now is your chance to make a difference in this battle against the undead. You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why? What do you think is missing from video games right now? Which do you think makes a better e-sport: DOTA, League of Legends, or Starcraft 2? Why? Top Five MCs? (That stands for Master of Ceremonies, not Master Chief. Please answer in the form of five YouTube links.) How and when did you first fall in love with Halo? Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie) Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general? What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online? What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year? If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be? Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why? [Edited on 09.18.2012 9:40 AM PDT]
I would use The Force because my midichlorian count is OFF THE CHARTS!
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Video games are missing replayability. Many games do not do a good job of making the game as enjoyable (or even more enjoyable) on subsequent playthroughs. Increasing the hitpoints of mobs does not make a game replayable. Downloadable content helps, but usually DLC just adds an extra hour or two of playability without improving replayability. Replayability to me requires the game to provide different experiences on subsequent playthroughs. For example, I think Skyrim is a game that provides excellent replayability.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
As I mentioned earlier, I am a big fan of Skyrim. The game is not inexpensive, but it is worth every penny. The world is vast, and there are thousands of quests you can do without feeling like you are grinding the same content over-and-over.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
Enjoy your job. If you don't enjoy your job, find a job you enjoy even if it pays less.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
World of Warcraft: Before WoW I was a very casual gamer. After WoW came out I spent thousands of hours preparing for raids, reading forums, and performing spreadsheet-Kung-Fu to min/max my gear. Why? It feels amazing to work with 40 other people to take down a boss. (Now the WoW raids only contain 10 or 25 people.)

You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why?
A staff that could animate my own personal army of Skeletons. Because they no longer have any meat and move using the purest and most potent of magics, the Zombies will be powerless before our might.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
I feel that true exploration is missing from modern videogames. It's one thing to create a large world that takes a while to cross, but it's another to create an unknown and interesting destination full of things for the player to discover and conquer on his own or with friends.
Which do you think makes a better e-sport: DOTA, League of Legends, or Starcraft 2? Why?
I think it's pretty cool how League of Legends has over a hundred different champions to master. Each professional has their preferred roles and their preferred champions that they become renown for, and following the metagame is both easy for spectators and very interesting.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
I was a Nintendo fanboy when I was younger and I never touched Halo or an Xbox prior to a birthday party where I was invited to play FFA Slayer on Battle Creek. My first experience with sticking someone in the face with a Plasma Grenade was the spark that led me to eventually get an Xbox of my own and a copy of Halo 2.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie)
Modern Times.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Absolutely, just because you're anonymous or doing poorly doesn't give you the right to be an asshat. Elevating community members who play the game properly as examples to aspire to could go a long way towards improving the future.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
I would teach everyone how to play the ancient strategy game of Go. It is a beautiful game which taught me more about balance and critical thinking than anything else in my life.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Super Mario 64 was my first 3D game, and it dazzled me with it's music and gameplay when I was a boy. I loved exploring interesting worlds like Bomb-omb Battlefield, Lethal Lava Land, and Tick Tock Clock.

What do you choose and why?
I would choose a machine gun that fires chainsaws. Do I really need to explain this one?
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Depth and realism in characters. The grizzled, silent marine, the damsel in distress, the angry black guy, the useless civillians, can we please have some more realistic. serious characters?
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
I fell in love with it playing at my friend's house on his Mac. My parents weren't big fans of violent video games back in the Halo 1 days, so playing the game at my friend's house was extra fun for me.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Yes: Stop just accepting it as an environmental hazard. Right now, we treat jerks online the same way we treat a building we have to go around: As something that is just there, and we can't do anything about it. But we can.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
Understanding and sensitivity are not bad things to be avoided, but necessary parts of life.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Star Fox 64, for the N64. It was the first game I played and owned, and I got hooked on that with the same friend who got me hooked on Halo.

 •
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Passion. The ones who really want to make games are drowned out by those who don't.
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
I met this one random person on Halo 3. We played one game, for some reason we ended up working together really well, and now we've talked for three years straight (without even meeting in real life!). He's pretty cool, and I've never met someone online who I've actually become friends with (at least, enough to still be talking for so long).
heretic. it was the first fps i played on PC...even before i played doom. there was something about the atmosphere and the music. turning enemies into chickens was cool too (at the time).
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo? It sounded epic and unstoppable, plus I'd finally get to see what it looks like!
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
I think many (certainly not all) video games lack a deep story that makes you care about the characters and the universe.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
The moment when I finally got into the lake on "Delta Halo".
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
One CTF game in Hemorrhage I was in one of the bases and ran into a player on the opposing team. We looked at each other for a moment, offered a peace crouch and spend the rest of the game hanging out in a base.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
How to teach another thousand people that idea. BAM! Instant pyramid scheme.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Mass Effect. It was my first RPG, and it blew me away with the level of depth and player interaction in the universe. Still does.

You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why?
The Hammer of Dawn or The Scarab Gun. I would be close to unstoppable. If I was gonna sacrifice myself; probably The Halo Rings or a Nuclear bomb.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
I think that the relation between the player and the protagonist is something that video games lack, I can't recall off the top of my head a game where I can relate to the character.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
I first fell in love with Halo back in 2005 when I went over to my cousin's house; he was playing Halo 2, and I played with him. I had so much fun playing split-screen; even though I was terrible at it. Every time I went over to his house I'd play it. At the time I thought that the Spartans were robots. But the first Halo game I bought was Halo 3. I looked at the cover and I was instantly reminded by that game with my cousin at his house. I had to buy it. Ever since I've loved the unique story and characters, as well as the environments.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie)
Blade.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Most definitely; I have never played a game of Call of Duty where there wasn't a prepubescent 13 year old claiming that he "Done my mum last night".
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
When I met a guy on Halo 3 in Lone Wolves; he was searching for help with an achievement and I helped him. He helped me in return, and ever since we've become really good friends on Xbox LIVE. Probably one of the nicest guys I met on Xbox LIVE. Also, playing with the Bungie.net community on Halo 3 on Bungie day this year was a great experience. Everyone was so nice and it was a great laugh.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
Ooh, That's a tough one. Loads of great games came out this year. But the one that stands out to me is Darksiders II. The story is well-told and it runs along the course of the first game. You play as Death, one of the horseman of the apocalypse and you're trying to prove War's innocence. The puzzles are pretty neat, too.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
That 0.99 = 1.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Mario. There is something about that overweight Italian plumber that reaches my heart, and will always have a place there. The first game I ever played was a Mario one, and I own a lot of the games. In my opinion, Mario is an iconic symbol in gaming. Edit: Quoted the questions. [Edited on 09.19.2012 8:48 AM PDT]

 •
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Replay value. Competitive gaming these days gives the player one goal: to become a higher rank. This excuse to add replay value makes the gameplay extremely repetitive; instead of giving the gamers different ways to play, the developers simply release more content to stave the player's boredom.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
My first experience with Halo was when I was at my cousin's birthday party and all of his friends were gathered around the TV. They were playing 4 player split-screen on Coagulation. Instead of playing Slayer they were doing rocket jumps, super jumps, honor-ruled Infection, and running each other over with Warthogs. I never saw people having so much fun without playing competitively. They handed me the controller and I crushed people with the grill of my Warthog.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie)
Limitless possibilities.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
Agree to disagree. People are so concerned about being right and making others believe the same thing that they do. Why do we fight with or declare war on people just because they're different? Thank you for the time you're putting into this to keep The Community entertained and interested in discussion. Many people (including me) look forward to this every week.

 •
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
How? Well, I was constantly being harassed by friends about this awesome futuristic game that is on the xbox. I wasn't into any other game consoles except for my N64. I gave it a try, it was okay, it felt different. I left it alone for a while, when I heard of Halo 3. I was excited, it looked amazing and the trailer(s) were very eye grabbing and the music was just awesome! When? Halo 3.

 •
The zombie apocalypse is upon us. Most of humanity has already fallen to the hordes of flesh-eaters. You have survived because of your ingenuity, cat-like reflexes, and dashing good looks. As you travel in search of food, you find a grizzled old man who offers to give you a powerful weapon. Now is your chance to make a difference in this battle against the undead. You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why?
I ask the old man for Beat's roller blades from Jet Set Radio Future, infinite spray cans, and a helmet (safety first). Zombies will fly like bowling pins as I ram into the hordes while using boost dash.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
There needs to be a horror game that isn't marketed as a horror game and you could go through the whole thing and not experience a single ounce of horror apart from perhaps a slight ominous feeling that something is amiss. However, if you go away from the main quest, horrible creepy events transpire and you realize that that there was always this horror hiding just underneath the surface and you never even saw it until just now and OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL.
Top Five MCs? (That stands for Master of Ceremonies, not Master Chief.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
After I played all three of my older brothers at once for the first time in Halo: Combat Evolved's multiplayer and whooped their asses, I realized I had finally found something that I was better at than all of them. That alone earned Halo my eternal love.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? I devoured the chronicles of past civilizations, monarchs, explorers, scientists, and much much more. Age of Empires II allowed me to live as and command many of those people. •
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
The ability to customize your character and interact with the universe outside the game itself. Imagine how cool it would be if you opened up an app on a smartphone, changed your characters look, went into the game, and boom, he's already changed.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
I fell in love twice.  Once when I played CE at a friends house, and another time when I could finally afford my own Xbox after the release of Reach.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Creativity and Solid Writing. It's been a while since a game really did something incredibly original. Sure games like L.A. Noire and Limbo took gaming in places it's never been but games are starting to become diffrent aspects of the same idea, it's time for something revoltionary. I mean solid writing in the sense of an incredible story. An emotional ride that puts the gamer into the game and immerse them into a world or concept that has never been explored. I want a true single player experience in games in the future.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
When I was 7 I was looking through a disk of game demos my brother had and I saw the Halo CE demo. Looking at it I was like "This green robot dude looks awesome!" so I started it up. The mission in the demo was Silent Cartographer, my favorite halo mission ever. As a kid, storming a beach with a crap load of soldiers helping you out was a dream come true. After replaying that mission over and over again I played multiplayer, and my god was I hooked.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Don't let 12 year olds play an M rated game, as simple as that. The gaming world would be a lot more easy going and quieter.
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
Definitely back in MW2 when me and a couple random guys, and a group of friends, put on riot shields and hid all over the map, sometimes in groups. When we got spotted we would pelt the people on the other team with smoke grenades and run out and find a new hiding spot. Another would be Halo 3 Customs but that story is way to long for you guys to care.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
Borderlands 2, because that wubwub.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
To never offer stosh toast.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Battlefront 2. It was my little dream as a child and remains to be one of the best games ever created, in my opinion. That game was ridicoulously amazing. The first one was awesome and I thought it couldn't get any better. The fact that it was star wars and it allowed you to get into some awesome fire fights was enough to keep me playing for years on end. I'm stoked you made my idea a reality! Thanks!

You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why?
I would probably choose a baseball bat. Despite the fact that zombies are undead humans, they're still undead humans. Hitting a person in the head with a baseball bat is enough to incapacitate them. Maybe even cause brain damage. With their slow reflexes and inability to easily asses any situation in any way other than, "Hey, look, flesh. Gimme," the ease with which a zombie could be incapacitated with a baseball bat is profound. Just for added measure, though, I want a baseball bat which a button on the handle that reveals a 6-inch spike on the end of the bat, just in case.
Top Five MCs? Jay Z
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Just don't react. If the bullying and harassment isn't actually harming anyone (physically or mentally), don't intervene. If it's a "haha -blam!- you guys we won", don't respond. That's how flamewars start. The old adage about "if you ignore a bully, they'll just stop" works in most situations (but not all). Also, utilize the report, flag, or any equivalent button. It's there for a reason. You may think it doesn't matter, or that nothing will get done, but not doing anything guarantees nothing will get done. At least with reporting you're on the board with a solid 1% chance.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
The absolute disregard companies have for the image of a series. Call of Duty has slipped into monotony, the likes of which I didn't think was achievable and yet Activision is going to continue to spew out the same product every time with slight alterations. "Same, but different" works for comedy routines, James Bond movies, and the Madden games. It does not work for and should not be used on other genres and mediums of entertainment. Also, running an idea or franchise into the ground is never the right way to go, even if it's profitable. If anything, think about your image as a company. As much as some people want to see their favorite series continue, they don't want to see them run into the ground. Thus, if you can't find anything good to do with the series, don't do anything with a series. It's better to take that called Ball with the bases loaded than to embarrass yourself and strike out on something that wasn't even close to the plate. Because nobody will remember that your team got the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th after coming back from 5 runs down; they'll remember that you struck out. •
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Good campaigns. All too often games have become driven by the multi-player side of things, leaving us with single-player experiences that are short, and have clearly been put together with very little thought. Character development and plot have taken a back seat in favour of "Michael Bay"esque sensationalism, and level design seems to be getting narrower and less imaginative. I'd like to see some campaigns that emulate the quality (and the length!) of campaigns from the pre-online era.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
There can never be too many positive role models.

 •
Posted by: DeeJ How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
My not-so-exciting not-affair with Halo started at a really young age when I saw my brother playing. I wasn't that young but I was confused why my brother was fighting what I perceived to be squids... and why they were fighting back. Darn squids.
