Reverse Mail Sack.

Okay, Bungie Community. You asked for the spotlight. Don't melt in its rays. Below are questions submitted by the developers who spend as much time wondering about you as you do about them. Suggested Guidelines: Please post in this thread only once. Failure to honor this request will result in forfeiture of your privilege to participate (or worse). I would recommend only answering the questions that really speak to you. Don't force this. I'll be looking for humor or sage wisdom that could benefit us all. And, more than a sentence or two will be heavily edited or ignored completely. No monologing. Have a ball! Oh, and QUOTE the questions you are answering. The zombie apocalypse is upon us. Most of humanity has already fallen to the hordes of flesh-eaters. You have survived because of your ingenuity, cat-like reflexes, and dashing good looks. As you travel in search of food, you find a grizzled old man who offers to give you a powerful weapon. Now is your chance to make a difference in this battle against the undead. You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why? What do you think is missing from video games right now? Which do you think makes a better e-sport: DOTA, League of Legends, or Starcraft 2? Why? Top Five MCs? (That stands for Master of Ceremonies, not Master Chief. Please answer in the form of five YouTube links.) How and when did you first fall in love with Halo? Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie) Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general? What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online? What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year? If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be? Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why? [Edited on 09.18.2012 9:40 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie)
Too easy. Enders Game Mind you, the movie isn't scheduled to be released until 2013. However, if you've read the books, you know it would make for an epic game considering the book is based around games. Strategy and aliens. What more could you ask for?

I cannot think of another weapon that would singlehandedly be more useful than something that provides teleportation.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Customization for most FPS games and creativity for non FPS games. FPS games seem to be single minded with a singular direction but they generally offer creative elements. Non FPS games seem to offer customization and freedom but the quests seem to be very repetitive.
Which do you think makes a better e-sport: DOTA, League of Legends, or Starcraft 2? Why?
I have not played DOTA nor League of Legends so I don't know
Top Five MCs? (That stands for Master of Ceremonies, not Master Chief. I remember going to his house almost every day for years playing Halo CE then later Halo 2 before getting the game myself in 2006.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? Also they need to stop harassing girl gamers.
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
Made a friend with one of my friend's online friends. Nice guy, played CoD 4 with him for hundreds of hours. Still party chat with him even after 4 years.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
Dollar for Dollar nobody gives better value than Borderlands Even though I just started I've already sunk 11 hours (not skipping school I promise) and I can tell it will take hundreds of hours to get into it.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Call of Duty 4. I was a pure Halo fan until I played that game. So much fun. It actually eclipsed my Halo 2+3+Reach game time by itself. Be nice. I wasted 15 minutes of my Borderlands gaming time for this. • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II. Prior to this game I would often play Pokemon Red on my Gameboy, but after my brother introduced me to the cooperative play on this game I have been hooked, as a gamer, ever since. It was something about becoming an angry ginger dwarf wielding a battle axe larger than my character that appealed to me. The joys I had playing that game with my older brother will be a memory I hope I never forget. Brilliant stuff. You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why?
I choose a time reversal ray, complete with infinite ammo and an infinite stream. What better way to stop a zombie apocalypse than to change the zombies back to the people they were just before they were attacked?
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Subtlety - that is to say, the minor nuances and details that make the presentation or gameplay unique amongst a crowd of competitors. It seems to have been foregone in exchange for a loud laundry list of features in both departments.
Which do you think makes a better e-sport: DOTA, League of Legends, or Starcraft 2? Why?
Despite LoL's booming popularity and excellent dev support for esports, as a ten year veteran of Starcraft I'd say it still takes the most skill to master and is hands down the most entertaining.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
My very first session during winter break 2001. I almost crapped my pajamas when I got to the atmospheric reveal of the flood, and that's when I knew I was in for a treat.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Both the former and the latter are usually the product of immature children who need their milk bottles. Feeding them attention need not apply.
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
Playing a marathon session of Halo 3's legendary map pack in BTB with a friend and a stranger who became a very good friend to this day after the session.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
Borderlands 2, and I'm not saying that just because I got a 25% deal on the game - there's a vast amount of bang for your buck here, even at full price.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Super Mario World. It's the game that simply made me crave getting more and more games. Also, I am wondering: how did you go about selecting which questions to use for this special occasion? Such a great game for small children to play! :D
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Not unless Scott Kankelborg stops making all of us feel insecure about our mothers.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
I would teach people that your and you're do not mean the same thing. COME ON PEOPLE.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Yes, yes there is. I had a passionate desire to defeat my father at Mario Kart 64 and 007 Goldeneye which turned me into a competitive gamer. Sadly, my father was far too powerful. [Edited on 09.18.2012 3:35 PM PDT]

Best part is that I just found that movie on Netflix last week and I want to live in that story.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Yes, but not at the expense of playability in games. IMO social gaming structures like clans helped this a lot back in mid 2000's.
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
Playing a string of custom games in H2 with a party of 8 where all we did was run around and try to bounce or glitch through barriers. I spent 3 hours doing that while talking to this 17 year old pregnant chick in-game.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Final Fantasy IX. I wanted to live in that world. Still own and play that game occasionally.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Where's the fun guys!?! The 30 second of fun was good for only a short amount of time, but after awhile, the fun part just kinda recede away into the ancient. It's almost like trying to play pac-man all day, when it eventually loses that "fun" after awhile.
Which do you think makes a better e-sport: DOTA, League of Legends, or Starcraft 2? Why?
Halo 3's Tea-bagging would be a excellent sport! To be fair, that's probably why Sgt. Johnson likes to talk about the ladies! If you know what I mean!
Top Five MCs? When I first saw Halo CE and the trailer at Walmart, I continue to beg my mother if I could get the console and the game. She did since we all had a tax refund, so she bought the big o' xbox original and Halo CE. Later that day, when I finally hooked up the xbox to the old tubed tv, I immediately fired it up and started to play Halo CE all day long! Despite the fact that I keep dying over and over on the mission "Library", I realized that this was the game of the year.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? (please submit your answer in the form of link to an iconic image from that movie)
2001 Space Odyssey - <3 Halcylon
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
Actually, I was at the panel for the Community Vs PR and the Harrassment and Bully Panel, I learned the essential of how this situation started. We shouldn't blame the developers for the irresponsible behavior from random players. It's actually our responsible for making it happen. To be honest, I honestly think that player who has terrible behavior lacks some parental supervision. However, if the game community could cut down the harassment, it'd be some kind of tools to help the players "Themselves" to avoid listening to the other people, or people who harass them. - By that, I mean like "Mute all" button, not like "Report suspicious behavior" or anything like that.
What is the most memorable positive experience you had with a stranger while gaming online?
Hmm... It'd have to be playing Battlefield 3 with a group of Bungie guys during the pentathlon day. I had this most inspired moment when Stosh pwned everyone as a gunner when I was the driver. Stosh and I were like the most powerful players, better than a squadron of tanks, that we eventually knew about teamwork without voice. It's almost as if he was my wingman!
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
My best game... would have to be Team Fortress 2. It's free, so why not? The quality of it has always remains classic and cartoonish style. However, what make this game interesting is that there's always some kind of community content made by people, who represent different variation of game modes into team fortress 2. These game modes have always kept the player interested and attention for "Fun". As a gamer myself, I am always having fun since there's always something new created by the people, regardless if it's original or not.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
Do what you're best at, because eventually there might be a job out there that you can do for the rest of your life.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Team Fortress 2. The online experience has always something new, regardless of competitive, fun, or challenges. There's always something interesting in the multiplayer that can easily hook you up into gaming "Business".

You can choose any one weapon, real or fictional. What do you choose and why?
Type II Phasers from Star Trek - specifically the design used in Voyager and newer. They have range, destructive power, the ability to control the width of the beam, and a nasty overload capability. In addition to roasting or vaporizing zombies, they could also be used as survival tools; starting fires, warming rocks for heat, or even blasting through solid rock for shelter. The design used in Voyager and the TNG movies, aside from being more aesthetically pleasing, are better designed ergonomically, and would result in less hand or wrist fatigue after extended use.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
I started playing Halo around my senior year in high school, which coincided with the launch of the XBox and Halo. The gameplay and story were a lot of fun, so Halo quickly replaced Goldeneye as the deathmatch game of choice between my best friend and me. I'd say I was pretty infatuated with the game by this point, but the defining moment that put me over the edge was a random event that got me into exploring the sandbox. During a co-op campaign session, I had thrown a plasma grenade at an Elite, just as the Elite was attempting to melee strike my friend. The plasma grenade was deflected off the Elite's plasma rifle, stuck to my friend, then killed him. After we finished laughing hysterically, we decided to start exploring what was possible in the game, and the boundaries of the sandbox. In doing so, we explored the depth of mechanics the game was built on top of, and began to appreciate the scale of the game outside the size of the environments. This also opened up whole new Slayer tactics to us; you'd be surprised how easy it is to disguise a plasma grenade using a plasma rifle :)
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
See my answer to "If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?" Seriously though, I don't think "more" is necessarily what's required, but maybe a change in tactics. Discouraging negative behavior is like treating a symptom, rather than the disease. Instead, I think the game community should focus its efforts on encouraging positive behavior. You can tell a person "don't do this or that" and they may comply to avoid the consequences of their actions, but they aren't inherently different. I suppose on some level I'm discussing semantics here, but there seems to be a clear difference between the two tactics, from my point of view.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
Half for one's own happiness, and half for the happiness of others ( Doshin So ). While this sounds an awful lot like the Golden Rule, the meaning goes a bit deeper for me. The Golden Rule asks us to "treat others the way we would like to be treated," which can be superficially interpreted. For example, the Golden Rule allows room for undue selfishness and hatred, as long as you outwardly appear to be a decent person. Not good enough. Half for one's own happiness, and half for the happiness of others, on the other hand, advocates a deeper sense of consideration and respect for others as part of your being, rather than simply how you behave in public.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
The Legend of Zelda on NES. It was the very first video game that belonged to me, rather than my family. It was thrilling to solve the puzzles in each dungeon and defeat the boss, without aid from my parents. It had everything; adventure, exploration, action, puzzles, and was just broken enough to exploit in a fun way without totally breaking gameplay. [Edited on 09.18.2012 11:04 AM PDT]

 • It seems like everyone is focusing too much on multiplayer, and this is taking away from campaign, either making it pointless or just boring.
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Probably the experience and the alien world. There was so much epicness, and there was nothing like it. This was back in 2001, and I was seven so the story wasn't as important as it is now.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
None...so far.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
Assassin's Creed. I enjoy(ed) how they interwove the game into history, and they were extremely good at immersing me/the player in the game.
In 1983, yes I am older, I could not get enough of Dragons Liar. I must have spent close to $50-$75 playing and memorizing the paterns to beat the game, plus it was one of the first games that I can remember that had a story.

Halo : CE was the first game I experienced -I had played quite a few games already, gaming is in my blood!- which had cool graphics, cool vehicles and cool multiplayer action. Indeed it was cool. •
The zombie apocalypse is upon us... ...What do you choose and why?
^ A super-maggot shooting device. Maggots only eat dead flesh and after they turn into flies, they will produce more maggots. Before the end of the month, we should have the uper hand of this battle. Besides, killing a fly will much easier than killing a zombie.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
^ My wife bought it with the original xbox when it launched. After judgeing it by it's cover I didn't care much for playing it, but she insisted that I keep it. Upon playing and crash-landing in a pelican on Halo, I was able to head-shot my first grunt. Now she wishes she hadn't convinced me to keep it.
Do you think the game community could be doing more to cut down on harassment or unsporting behavior in general?
^ Nope...Haters gona Hate. Now go make me a biscuit...please!!!
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
^ N64 Goldeneye. I can't tell you how many hours of life I spent, playing till 3 or 4 in the morning with my friends. But wouldn't trade the memories for anything.

They all joined, and we loaded up a game of Team Deathmatch. At the request of Lord Snakie, all of us equipped riot shields and Javelins. Our team spawned, fired our Javelins, popped smoke grenades, and formed a phalanx with our riot shields while shouting "THIS IS SPARTA!" into our microphones. The after-game banter with the opposing team was probably one of the most entertaining conversations that I've had with anyone, ever. •
Then I would be able to go just about anywhere quickly and I could escape just as quickly. I could also put a portal under the zombies and then on the Moon.
How and when did you first fall in love with Halo?
Halo 2. Played it at a friends house and was immediately addicted. Luckily there is a cure for my Halo addiction, but we only know the codename. •
Posted by: DeeJ Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
Trials: Evolution. That game contains one of the most revered and acknowledged contents of any good game. A Challenge. The Challenge is what makes you feel satisfied at the end of a game / level, it is the reason you keep coming back, and it is the reason you will never leave. In addition to that, they added user-created tracks that can contain some of the most difficult challenges known to man, challenges that people like myself have trouble beating. But that's why I love to play them. They're too hard. The harder it is, the bigger the drive I have to teach myself how to beat it, the more I learn, the better I get. The better I get, the more satisfaction I earn. Do you see the pattern I'm following? It's not the game that makes the game great, it's what's in the game that makes you want to break the game.

Then I could just go back and prevent the apocalypse (or destroy the world in worse ways).
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Challenge and innovation. A lot of games are just playing it safe these days and they don't want to stump the player or force them to apply practical skills to play. This takes away a key strategical component that I feel gamers once had to master. I'm also still waiting for Nintendo to make a Pokemon game allowing me to dodge battle attacks in real time with a voice command.
Which movie would you most like to play as a video game? Those marines could make for some pretty funny NPCs, especially that one sergeant guy. I doubt that would sell well though.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
I'd make up some mainstream sounding acronym that would excuse foolish behavior and write a song about it.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
For me it would be Super Smash Bros Melee. There was nothing greater than destroying your friends in a 10 minute match and having them rage and throw controllers. I remember having a social life before playing this game, and when I picked up the controller it grew even larger. I went to more LAN parties than I could count and it was a great way to connect with my friends after a vacation. I even tried my hand at a few tournaments and our local library would hold weekly game nights that we also went to. I think my favorite part of gaming would be the social aspect to it.
I would have to credit Gears of War 3 with this. Grinding to earn "We Few, We Happy Few..." on Insane difficulty with my buds was one of those 'pinnacle' moments of my Gaming Career. Couldn't have done it without DeathPimp, Either. Rest in Peace, my dear friend. Can't look at that achievement without tearing up. Some of the best times i've ever had.
I would use The Force because my midichlorian count is OFF THE CHARTS!
What do you think is missing from video games right now?
Video games are missing replayability. Many games do not do a good job of making the game as enjoyable (or even more enjoyable) on subsequent playthroughs. Increasing the hitpoints of mobs does not make a game replayable. Downloadable content helps, but usually DLC just adds an extra hour or two of playability without improving replayability. Replayability to me requires the game to provide different experiences on subsequent playthroughs. For example, I think Skyrim is a game that provides excellent replayability.
What's the best game in your opinion - in terms of value/dollars ratio as opposed to raw quality - that came out this year?
As I mentioned earlier, I am a big fan of Skyrim. The game is not inexpensive, but it is worth every penny. The world is vast, and there are thousands of quests you can do without feeling like you are grinding the same content over-and-over.
If you could easily teach a thousand people one idea, what would it be?
Enjoy your job. If you don't enjoy your job, find a job you enjoy even if it pays less.
Is there one game (other than Halo) that you can point to that really hooked you and turned you into a gamer? What was it and why?
World of Warcraft: Before WoW I was a very casual gamer. After WoW came out I spent thousands of hours preparing for raids, reading forums, and performing spreadsheet-Kung-Fu to min/max my gear. Why? It feels amazing to work with 40 other people to take down a boss. (Now the WoW raids only contain 10 or 25 people.)
