Bungie and the classroom...

Today in my cyber ethics, we talked about fair usage and copyright laws. My professor's example was the Halo 3 believe trailer. We watched the video and I couldn't help but make a smile. I thought it was an interesting thing to discuss. Apparently the song in the trailer (not made by Marty) is public domain and we talked about how this made it so Microsoft could air the ad more while spending less money. There are a lot of economic and copyright issues behind marketing anything. I guess you can learn a lot from Bungie. With that in mind, has Bungie ever made it to your lecture or classroom? • As far as I know, not one time, other than a substitute teacher talking about playing Halo.

 • A few years ago I did a Powerpoint presentation on Halo 3. It was for English, where we had to make a persuasive presentation to see who was able to get people to be interested in trying something they presented. My presentation highlighted the awesome campaign, the ability to play with friends and create screenshots and custom environments, which no-one else in the class knew. It was accompanied by clips and pictures taken by myself. I came second in a class of thirty.

 • Not really related but once, on the radio on the way to school, the radio announcer read out a poem/love letter to Marty. Hilarious and epic!

 • Once a teacher was talking about halos and before he started to explain what it is he said something like "Yes, I know that's a video game, but I'm talking about something different here." And he was like 60 years old and this happened in Germany. So even 60 year old German teachers know about Halo. I don't think he knew who/what Bungie is though. [Edited on 09.18.2012 1:42 AM PDT]

Regardless, I consider both highly respectable to be chosen upon.

 • I read a novel, yes a whole novel, today (only 200 pages) about story telling. I was completely encompassed by it page by page, but in the final chapter everything hit close to home. The author starting talking about MMORPGs and the future of "story telling" in the world. One of the sections in this chapter was titled "O BRAVE NEW WORLD" but to my dismay Bungie was not mentioned. Still it made me smile and think of us, here (I know we did not invent O BRAVE NEW WORLD, but it relates). Just thought this would be a thread where I could throw this in and it would be relevant. Both Ken and I experienced some Bungie-ness at our universities today! :) [Edited on 09.17.2012 5:37 PM PDT]

 • Never, apart from my teacher trying to tell me I didn't go to school for two weeks because I was busy playing Halo (I had Swine Flu at the time), although that doesn't really count.

 • In my business communications class, we briefly discussed Bungie's team management. I referenced Bungie's about us page in my final paper on building more efficient teams. Odd number is better than even, men/women balance is important, the optimal range for most projects or sub-projects is three to seven, best being five. Slides between floors are both faster and more fun. Lots of interesting results from that one.

If you need more than 2 Xboxes you can use a Ethernet Switch Oh, Halo 2 or 3. Swords with shotguns as backup. We would run Ethernet cables between the hooches. It was such an amazing time considering where we were. There were Bungie posters on the doors so you could tell which hooches were having LANs. So thanks for making it easier for us!!!
Nice! I won't pretend I can match that but... I am hosting a Halo LAN for my Air Force ROTC detachment in a month or two. Tis awesome haha. Right now the only barrier is... which one to pick and how to connect two Xboxs. And I guess I have to find a way to get three more controllers which sucks since I am poor, but I do have the two Xboxs!

We primarly focused the idea of "First person shooter" and "future-realistic".

I wish it had, but it hasn't. Maybe someday... [Edited on 09.17.2012 10:50 AM PDT]
