Skyrim: Hearthfire DLC - opinions?

T4R I had 400MSP spare and thought I'd give it a go since it looked fairly interesting to add to the experience of the game. That said, I played for about an hour and once you have about 100,000 gold you're just going to be travelling back and forth to different merchants to buy a -blam!-ton of iron ingots. It's quite a dull process, but I can see Bethesda wanting the players to experience the additional things in the game which people don't take much notice of (wood-chopping, mining etc)... the problem is that it doesn't expand on that experience to make it interesting though, mining and wood-chopping are time-consuming and boring. My tip: Pull a Homer Simpson and just get some device that will continuously press A for you for about half an hour while you have a cup of tea and a scone, or two. You're going to need a lot of different items to craft the house and it's a torturusly boring process to go through if you're just going to sit through it. Other than that, it's quite nice to make your own physical mark on Skyrim.

 • I've probably spent about 35k on stuff so far, with two fully built (only one fully furnished) houses. Also biggest benefit: Kid I adopted left some Jazbay grapes in their chest. Helped towards a quest :P

 •
Posted by: Frequency99poopy Does it really take up that much gold? Or are you just joking?
It does take lot of gold if you aren't interested in mining lot of materials like iron, etc. Straws, glasses, dresses/clothes, etc are mandatory to buy for your house, I believe.

And how do you get to buy those?
Hjaalmarch, Falkreath and The Pale
Thank you. So do I just go talk to the stewards or do I have to do something first?
A courier should just run up to you and that'll get it started
Thanks for your help. I knew how to start it and all but didn't know where all it was possible to build a house or how to get them all save the Falkreath one. Also is it weird if he only gave me the property note and not the one about adopting kids? Because in my first game I got them both at the same time.
Hahaha I dunno man, I'm going to get Hearthfire tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

 • Mmm. I'll get it tomorrow. I'm dissapointed that it's not possible to build a house in Haafingar though.

 •
Posted by: ajw34307
Posted by: grey101 I would buy skyrim again if you were able to marry serana. until then it will never be welcomed in my house again.
She certainly should be a marriage option. Very few of the mates available in the game have any relationship to the player beyond: "You did me a favor once, let us get married!" It's not really grounds for a lifelong pledge of marriage that I recovered some old shield or retrieved an animal's limb... It has left the entire feature a pretty darn hollow experience. Serana is totally different. In Dawnguard, Bethesda added exactly the kind of character who should be a marriage (or at least romance) option. Throughout the DLC you forge a relationship with her on the foundations of trust, respect, and shared hardship. I sided with the Dawnguard, yet she walked straight into enemy territory, into almost certain death, to recruit my aid. She announces to her mother that you have done more for her in your short time together than her family had in centuries. She'll even agree to cure her vampirism for you! It served as the basis of her identity for most of her life, but she'll cure herself just because you ask her to. There is a far more palpable and meaningful connection between Serana and the player than any other 'mate' in the game. But nope, you can't have her because she doesn't like temples...
Actually, she just friendzoned you.

 • 400 MS Points to get 50 GS from it... I didn't really like this DLC but I got it. All they need to fix is... Serana should be a marriage option!

 • I downloaded it, got no messages about adopting or buying a house from the courier, couldn't get any options about buying land from the Jarls or Stewards themselves of the cities you can get land from, and raged quit.

 • So how can you get stewards in your home guys? Like the carriage driver and the person who buys materials?

 •
Posted by: ajw34307
Posted by: Dodge Reborn Can't you hire a steward to buy materials for you? I heard that was a feature.
I've been given no indication in the game of how to do that yet. I think you have to ask a follower to become a steward, or something like that...
Not every follower can become a steward.
