Seventh Column Council

Taken from the recent "History of the Seventh Column" article.
Q: People think of Bungie as just Halo, but 7th Column is the most old-school aspect of the community, where do you see it going in the future? A(Yeroen): In the future I would love to see the 7th Column become much more organized. With organization comes the ability to pull off bigger and better things--bigger FanFests, bigger fan films, whatever. We've considered imposing high level organization on the 7th Column in the past, but always held off. As much as we'd love to be at the forefront of this project, we believe it will only be successful if it is organized from within, by its own members.
Ok, well I suppose we should get to work. Sounds like bungie really wants us to setup some sort of governing body for the seventh column. Might be best to get this started now before halo 2 hits and were all too busy fragging each other. So how do we do this? Should we model the SCC after our democratic goverment and have a president and advisors? I don't really know. What are your ideas? (i know we've had this conversation in the past -- but lets recap). [Edited on 5/6/2004 2:31:32 PM]

 • or the moderators should simply be a part of the council.

 • The Council should do both - the forums a part of the community.

 • I agree with Miguel. I'm still unsure as to what the focus of the Council would be - most people seem to think that it would be a group of moderator-types. There's no need for a council to do that - moderators can do it - that's why we have them! The council should act to extend and improve the Bungie Community in general, not just clean up the forums. - Reiginko

 • I think something like "supreme justices" and not one president. spread the "power" over seven people or something. id ont know if that just came out right, i am still goin gagga over the special edition halo2 box...

 • Holy smokes, you guys are getting too caught up in the minutae of the council. Forget all that stuff. Like Dean, Stosh and others have said, a council needs a reason to exist. If folks can agree on that reason, then all the better. Personally, if the council's purpose is to be 'maintenance' for the 7C, don't you think folks would find that kinda boring? My feeling is that Bungie would prefer that you let them (the folks that are getting paid) take care of that drudgery (though the council's assistance doesn't hurt, of course) and would rather the council think in terms of the bigger picture. my 2 cents.

 • I'm for a secret forum, but I think if there is to much outside interfreience it will stop much from getting done. Maybe make it so that people can read what's going on, and possibily discuss it on a different forum?

 • Yeah, still they should have a Staff Only option for posts, just incase something comes up.

 •
Or just have like...maybe their own hidden forum?
Like I said, I believe that all b.net members should have read-access to the Council's board. It should be open.

 • stosh is correct, a chapter for the council is a somewhat bad idea. I'm afraid that this chapter might draw too much attention away from the 7c mainpage itself. Ofcourse it can be a staff only chapter, but that's a different story. Anyway, back to the attention thing. Is it just me, or is it that since the new B.net, the 7th column is suddenly less "atractive" and barely visited? Perhaps i'm wrong, but if i'm correct. than it would be one of the main jobs for the council: make the 7th column known and active and atractive again. Because i noticed that some of the members that joined right after the new B.net, still don't know what the 7th column and it's chapters are. Correct me if i'm wrong.

 • Well that does sound like a good idea, maybe they could use chapter founders for staff only discussions and stuff? They have to have somewhere where they could law down ideas. I say the keep checking through the septagon and other forums for ideas of what needs to be improved for the 7th Column and such.

 • I am totally against having a chapter for Council. The seventh columns homepage is our responsibility. What we would use a chapter for? Doesn't make any sense. We've already got chapter founders, anyway. A chapter would only make us look like some elite club...I don't want that. You guys aren't thinking big enough. Like what JAF said, we could transform the Seventh Column's home page into some sort of uber chapter. We should make the Seventh Column's hompage THE place to look for Halo 2 events, Lan parties, Chapter Discussion, Chapter Help...Everything. The SC is just a spam pit as it is now. It could be sooo much more. [Edited on 5/10/2004 3:42:04 PM]

 • Plus having a chapter with its own poll would be useful to vote on ideas, rather then having the main page because I don't think we would like to limit a poll to only seven people and make every one else wait till after we are done to get there poll back.

 • True, it might be hard adding a ton of new stuff to it, it's old as sketch said. We could break it like an old mans' hip!

 • If I understand correctly, just another fan said the main page could kind of be a chapter itself. Well I do think that a chapter should be made for some reasons already stated (Databases to keep track of events, news posted, desicions made in the forums etc.) and if it is on the main page, that'd be great but I don't know if it is possible. Might be, though. Did anyone here actually read my whole post? If you did, you get a cookie :D (I bet a cookie because I know none of you did.) Also organizing events should not be its top priority, but a very high priority.

 • Perhaps the 7th column main page should be some sort of Uber chapter. it should be possible to give it databases and all, while still remaining all the current feats.

 •
Posted by: Yoozel I agree with stosh, the council would need a chapter, is would help with discussion and it would make it so that the council’s discussion would not be interfered. Use of a chapter’s private forum would help that, and a Q&A on the front page would be totally awesome. It would also be really cool if Council members wrote helpful articles and posted them to the front page. Myself personally would love to see articles on how to have successful LAN events. A wide array of useful articles would be nice too, maybe even expand on what Chapter Founder’s has to offer. I think we should work out the kinks of the Council first, then worry about LAN and XBL events once it is set up.
I thought stosh said we shouldn't have a chapter. Either way, I think it woulde cool either way, chapter or not, though a chapter would be easier to maintain stuff in the databases like results of events and stuff.

 • stosh said that there shouldn't be a chapter for it. If there is, I would like to see a publicly-viewable forum - the Council should be open about its plans. When do you think it'll be set up, if it's decided that this is a good idea? It should definitely be before Halo 2, but I'm thinking ASAP so that the Council has long enough to sort itself out before the (probable) huge influx of new members.

 • Check the board description. Or just move your mouse over "community". The 7th Column is Bungie's official fan club.

 • I don't think the SCC should have a chapter. I mean the seventh column's mainpage should be our home. Wouldn't it be sweet if there was a Q&A database right on the seventh column's mainpage?

 • I also agree with stosh's point about organizing LIVE events with chapters. It sounds like a great idea, but who's gonna play Halo 2 24/7? Not me. I just cant do that these days. On weekends, however, I would happily take part in battles, and I would oversee LIVE events if I was charged to do so...

 • On the issue of Chapter Wars...About a year back( I dont know if some of you may remember) I created a chapter called 'Alliance Peacekeepers' The whole idea was to keep peace in the 7th column. I had some prominant members and we prevented several chapter wars, it had an effective alert system, and good sentry's throughout the 7th column. It was very cool but after about 4 months I disbanded it due to inactivity( we had stopped many chapter wars and there was too much peace :) I had my own defense corps as well in case of war waged on us. I was very suprised on how sucessful I was. All I needed was support for it to be sucessful. If you guys would like this kind of thing up again, I will volunteer to lead a 'peacekeeping corps' if needed.
