Why do I find girls that look like my sister attractive?

I have this teacher that looks like my sister, except a little bit different and older. I find her attractive. I find other girls that look like my sister attractive as well. I do not find my sister attractive though. Why do I do this, Flood? Can you explain this?

I'm pretty sure they're too similar...
For the same reason you find humans attractive but not chimpanzees, because your DNA is immensely closer to humans than to chimpanzees. It's the same for your sister and people who look like her. The Westermarck effect makes it so you don't find people you grew up with in your infancy attractive. Incest is the exception that proves the rule. That's why many people find their cousins attractive.
I should find people who's genes are different than mine, but not too different attractive. Diverse is generally better, but obviously I'm not going to find a chimpanzee attractive.

 •
Posted by: Bryanesie
Posted by: WinyPit82 If I'm not mistaken, there is a natural, biological repulsion of attraction to siblings. What I mean is, you're naturally inclined not to find siblings or close relatives attractive. It's an evolutionary trait that lessens the likelihood of incest (Which, obviously, is biologically detrimental to offspring).
Westermarck effect?
At's the one! Thanks.

 • Do you find those other girls attractive BECAUSE they look like your sister, or do you find them attractive AND they look like your sister?

 • Humans are attracted to what they know well. You've grown up with your sister for most of your life, right? So you feel more comfortable and familiar with someone that looks like her. Just as long as you're not actually attracted to your sister.

 • I think it's something like you're repulsed by people who have too similar genetics, but people who have similar genetics but not too similar are very attractive. Something like that. [Edited on 08.31.2012 9:43 PM PDT]
