If I sell my computer, can I keep the hard drive?

I need to sell my computer for some quick cash, and if I do, could I keep my hard drive? Also, what company could I sell it too?

 •
Posted by: Frnksnbns Wow, nobody has mentioned the very obvious solution: The pawn shop.
Actually pawn shop was mentioned, and it would be a horrible idea for OP.

 •
Posted by: I ColdEmbrace I No, you must sell your machine with the HDD. Under the Electronics Resell Provision Act, you must resell the machine as you had it. You may not wipe the drive either. Penalties are maximum $5,000 fine and 1 year imprisonment.
Oh god, Lol'd at the people thinking this exists.

 • Find a local listing website and post an ad about a computer, and include the specifications. Then make sure to indicate it's missing a harddrive. It really isn't that hard.

 • I keep all my old machines around. Never know when you need to strip a part. If the stuff is broken and refuses to work no matter what, I take it out to the desert and put it out of it's misery with 7.62x54 millimeters of copper jacketed steel core fun.

 • Ebay is so easy to use. Creat an account. Creat an auction lasting 24 hours. Add a reasonable buy it now price. Get paid. Keep money in paypal or transfer the paypal money into your bank account.

Unless you've gotten this computer within the last year or so, you're not going to get over $600 for it. If you want to take the HDD out, you're going to get even less. I, as others have already, suggest that you acquire an external HDD and transfer what you need on to that. Once you've done that you can then reformat the HDD and sell the computer as a whole. Companies like Micro Center might buy it off you, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
I got it in June. It has an Ivy Bridge i5, so it should be worth something.
So the computer is basically brand-new? If you've only used it for two months, then I'm guessing you could sell it to someone on Ebay or Craigslist for a nice price. Selling it to a store will be easier, but you'll get less for it - at least that's what I've experienced. Can you post the rest of the specs?
8 GB of RAM 1 TB HDD Windows 7 Home Premium Radeon HD 7550
You could probably get somewhere around $400 if you kept the HDD in there. Not if you sold it to a store, but if you put it up on Ebay. I understand you're in a rush, but people will take advantage of that, at least on Craigslist, and attempt to buy it for cheap.
You still will be selling in person, most likely, this will just get the word out. Jazz up the ad but do not lie.

 •
Posted by: A Good Troll You can always take it to a pawn shop. They'll buy it for about 25% of what it is worth.
25% if you are lucky. There are only certain things that they will buy at a % value, more often than not they base their offer on what they can re-sell for. Since computers tech changes monthly, they depreciate very quickly.

 •
Posted by: gaurdianAQsclone Well there aren't many if any places where you can just drive down and they'll take your computer. And you'de probably get less then 200 dollars for it that way. Like 100 at most. How old is your computer anyways?
I'm in quite a pickle.

 •
Posted by: Twisted Balls Fellas, I can't be bothered with Internet selling. I just want to drive somewhere, sell it, then drive home.
You could try someplace like a repair shop that may need it for parts or something. As far as I know, there are no companies, what so ever that buy old computers. As far as the HDD goes, yes, you can sell it minus the HDD, provided that you inform the buyer that it does not have one.

The computer costs $800 and I don't think any of my friends are willing to pay half of that.
You won't get anything close to $800 for a computer during resale unless the computer was $2,000 new or a Mac.
I know. I just need to know where to sell this thing at. Will Comp USA take it or something?
Try craigslist.
Fellas, I can't be bothered with Internet selling. I just want to drive somewhere, sell it, then drive home.
