Besides Spartans and ODSTs who would be an interesting character...

Who in the halo universe would be interesting to play as ? Lets say 343 decided to just end master chiefs story at halo4 (yeah right) and the asked for recommendations to who should be the next hero in the halo universe ; who would you like to play as? SGT. Johnson Playing as him from Harvest up till he dies?

These acts, whether implied or not, are telling about the nature of those who perpetrated it. In all likelihood there wouldn't be enough emphasis on the rarity of it and then it ends up ruining the Covenant's character. In another universe the Covenant are still faceless like they were in CE, in which case this probably wouldn't be an issue for me. (As I wouldn't be a Halo fan) However they have went to all this trouble in Halo 2, Halo 3, Legends and other works showing them to have a personality and character. These are people, not monsters. This is one of the reasons I absolutely abhor 343i's classless and uninspired redesign of the Covenant for Halo 4. They are relegated to something that is supposed to illicit no thought or emotion from you. It's just a boogeyman that you have to fill with lead. There probably will be more violence coming from the Covies in Halo 4 anyway, just because it completes the set of all things devoid of any soul or meaning.
Posted by: talz321 But didnt bungie try to give us that feel of the covenant in Reach, I mean, giving them their alien language back and show us them blowing up civilian fleets packed with innocent families, but showing them eating civilians would desroy the picture we got of most covenant races.
This is true, but I didn't care for it that much. The Covenant felt as if they were just sort of there because of it, and nothing more. You could have replaced their visual looks with anything that babbles incoherently and it would have had the same effect to all intents and purposes. There was nothing really "Covenant" about them besides their looks, and if that is what they really are, then the term is pretty meaningless. They all sort of behaved the same; sounded the same. The end cutscene was one of the things I hated about that game though; the Elites acting like a pack of Hyenas in taking N6 down. That is stuff I would expect from enraged Brutes, and at a stretch, normal Brutes. I certainly wouldn't expect it from the Elites. The overall intention in the game was obvious though; to make the Covenant "scary" again for the game. But it failed for me, because I don't see them that way any more, and probably won't be able to in future. (Looks at 343i nonchalantly....)
In Reach we even saw them break the spine of one or two civilians, showing off a bit more gore when the brutes did theirs would not hurt the relationship most have to them.
The Brutes merely exist to be bad guys and fill the Elite-shaped hole in the Covenant after Halo 2. These things seem to exist solely to make you hate them. Maybe I'm just tired and can't think properly, but I can think of very little redeeming qualities that they posses. Maybe they could become an actual race in the story one day and break that down. I agree with you on the Flood though. It is basically an Eldritch Abomination. It's not supposed to be something you feel comfortable with. I feel that they could have done more here though. By Halo 3 the Flood became something slightly pitiful. There was nothing really jarring about them.
You have a very good understanding of what makes the Covenant, Covenant; spot on when it comes to the Elites. The only thing I wish to add is that--from what I've seen--the Jackals, ever since H2, have been portrayed as monsterous and carnivorous. Especially in the Believe diorama, where a bunch of them were shown dragging a struggling marine into a cave (or whatever it was). Although the latter was created by post war humans, so it could be baised.. [Edited on 08.02.2012 1:04 PM PDT]

 • Brutes were never a good replacement for Elite enemies, which is why Halo 3's campaign was boring.

 •
Posted by: talz321
Posted by: MashterChief117 i always thought it would be interesting to play as a regular marine, playing through the events of Halo 3, for the first couple of levels you fight with master chief who is an A.I ally through levels like the storm and after he and johnson and miranda etc. leave to the ark your character stays on earth to continue the fight against the covenant either that or to play an average day civillian trying to escape the streets of new mombasa when it gets invaded, it could turn into a stealth game where you'd have to fashion weapons out of what you can find, and if you're lucky to find an assault rifle lying around you'd have to be careful not to waste all the ammo and conserve it, could have a progression system through the levels where by the end you're a bit of a guerrilla fighter in the streets of mombasa, picking off covenant one by one
You like this idea? A group oriented survival game, where a group of 8 players are set in the roles of marines trying to survive in new mombasa or a similar metropolis. The efficiency of a single marine would be so bad against covenant squads that they had to work together in a group with different roles to survive. 2 or 3 could play as medics, 2 could operate heavy weapons, 1 or 2 snipers/CQC and the rest would play the role of ordinary assault marines. The health system could work like when your shields are down in reach, if the health fall to low it wont regenerate back to full. The medics would have medpacks they could drop. One could cary 15 at a time, but for the medics to get more of them, the group would have to raid hospitals or similar places, offering medical supplies. Ammunition could be found in crates around in the city, or dropped down in pods like in reach. Kills would give the group points, that could be used to spawn units when they died or to buy weapon/vehicle drops. Medical units would cost more that the other units. Standar marines would be the cheapest. Marines specialized to different roles would have small trait differences that would fit their role better. Example: Heavy weapons: 150% health, 90% movement speed. Sniper: 90% health 125% movement speed, 110% jump height CQC: 150% melee dmg, 125% jump height, 110% health The default marines would have 100% to all traits. Players would move pretty slow so they would need to have sprint as an ability, exept for CQC, he would have evade. Vehicles would be a big part of the game, they could be used to get around in the city. If the group wanted, they could go on missions around in the city, like sieging buildings the covenant have gained controll of to shut down an anti aircraft turret on the roof or something. The game would include all UNSC weapons, seen in halo CE to Reach.
^ This guy ^

There is another phrase like that, it goes like "Don't judge a book by its..." Themes of genocide, religious indoctrination, fascism, racism, redemption and atonement are things that would likely go right over the head of kids playing the game, and are certainly not for them if they could understand what was going on. And the Covenant are aliens; they don't have to use Human colours and conventions for their military clothing and gear, especially when you can press a button and make yourself invisible. All excessive violence would do is demonize the Covenant and make them typical baddies if you don't get the balance right and show people that this sort of stuff is exclusive to certain groups or individuals. I don't see people calling Star Trek for kids due to its lack of blood, guts and gore. Well, maybe they do, but I also suppose that discussing whether or not Captain Picard going with the Prime Directive and allowing the Ornarans to continue using Felicium and be exploited was the right thing to do would be wasted on such people. Suppose that they add scenes of graphic violence where Elites literally butcher innocent people with energy swords? What does it add? Well, it's not for kids... What do we lose? Well, I'm pretty sure that it would tarnish the Elites character forever unless you are also willing to heavily emphasise the extreme rarity of such barbarism. Suppose they show you Grunts eating people alive? That would pretty much destroy their character as the timid and diminutive creatures we have always known. Suddenly they are like Gorilla's who will tear you're face off if you even look at them wrong. But hey, so long as all aliens are mindless monsters with no feelings or character of their own what does it matter? They don't need values of their own, do they?
Really well thought arguments there, I now agree with you to some point. It would indeed ruin the feel we get when we see grunts in the games. But didnt bungie try to give us that feel of the covenant in Reach, I mean, giving them their alien language back and show us them blowing up civilian fleets packed with innocent families, but showing them eating civilians would desroy the picture we got of most covenant races. Exept for brutes, we knew since Halo 2 that they were brutal warriors with no ethical rules. In Reach we even saw them break the spine of one or two civilians, showing off a bit more gore when the brutes did theirs would not hurt the relationship most have to them. This goes for the flood also, they were supposed to be- gory, slimy, deformed and violent. Most of the times we are introduced to them in the games the scene is packed with creepy music and few lights, so I think that addding more gore and graphical violence to the flood and the missions they are a part of would actually further develop what they were meant to be.

I understand that when it comes to brutes, making a deep story won't work, since many people hate them after seeing what they did to humanity on earth. I would like to see this as a secondary game type. There could be a plaza or something in New Mombasa, with lots of civilians walking around, then your phantom stops over them and you drop out and see how man you can kill. You can then explore the entire city, hunting down remaining civilians, fighting human resistance, and calling down Covenant squads to help you out. To reach a place where you can call in a specific squad, you need to fight through humans guarding that area. Once you've unlocked all the areas you can call down hunters and chieftains. You can also ask for weapon drops with whatever covie weapon you want. But you need to unlock these by getting a specific number of kills or a specific kill style.

Keys, Cole and all the other lunatics in one strategy game. Also, Dirt would be interesting if you allowed Odsts. [Edited on 07.29.2012 6:51 PM PDT]

Nah, to hell with organic beings, ONNSK, The SuperIntendent, or another A.I, could all be main characters in a game. Instead of conversational boredoms such as human beings. Think of it, you control an entire city through an A.I, desperately trying to lead a bunch of humans to safety, relying solely on surveillance cameras, pressure pads, data systems, control over doors, etc. That could make a hell of an engaging story.
That would actually make a great tower defence-ish game if anyone could get the rights and allowances for the series allowing them to do so. And it would make a great game if done right.
