I was wondering if all of the currently published Halo books listed here are all considered to be fully accepted into canon (both by the community and Bungie/343)? I assume that the books wouldn't have been given license to be published if they weren't...but perhaps some take more liberties than others?
Just looking for commentary on the overall acceptance or inconsistencies of the books on the aforementioned list.
Much love.
Posted by: TheMasaker 13666 You can obviously believe whatever you want. However you will be missing out on quite a bit when it comes down to it. All games and books, including the comics are ALL canon. To ignore one just means you can't have a full conversation when that information is considered canon by the very people that created and now maintain Halo. If I mention Noble 6, you come back and say Halo:Reach isn't canon in your eyes so he didn't exist. Bungie and 343 say differently. Which means you lose the argument/discussion because you don't control the lore.
That's dragging it out to an extent. I don't believe all comics are canon, especially the one with a retired Spartan. I can believe in certain aspects of Halo: Reach, but I don't have to believe in all of them. The games overwriting book canon was Bungie's policy not 343's (Unless you can provide an article stating otherwise.) I can still be knowledgeable about the lore, but I don't have to accept all of it. I do need to go back and re-read some of the books though.
Posted by: grey101 So because something isn't 100 percent perfect it isn't canon? Either you are ridiculously spoiled or unnecessarily sheltered about life.
What an ignorant statement. I posted that in reference to your own statement claiming there were very little inconsistencies. Where do you get the idea someone is spoiled based off of the fact that I choose to believe in book canon over game canon due to the inconsistencies between them? Stop acting all high and mighty. People have different opinions. Spartan1995324 responded with his opinion and I'm acknowledging it. I disagree with it, but i'm not going to say he's close minded or sheltered because he views something in another way.

Halo: Reach is the story of the Spartan IIs that tried to defend the orbital MAC guns generators from the covenant ground forces while the Chief along with two other Spartan IIs (I think) were in charge of purging a badly damaged UNSC ship of all data relating to the location of Earth and any other planets held my humanity and the UNSC. Halo: The Flood is the retelling of the Halo:CE game with a few side stories. Halo: First Strike fills the gap of time between Halo:CE and Halo 2, explaining what happened after the Master Chief destroyed the Halo ring and how he managed to get back to Earth, also explaing how Johnson made it back as well, despite not being explained in Halo:CE. (NOTE) Halo: First Strike is, also in my opinion, one the the best of all the Halo novels. Halo: Ghosts of Onyx is a story told in parallel to Halo:CE, Halo 2 and Halo 3, (SPOILERS AHEAD) showing what happened to Halsey after her encounter with Chief and Kelly (Again I think) during Halo: First strike. Halo: Contact Harvest is a prequel to all the prior books, giving a glimpse of how the covenant-human war began. Also, it is the ONLY Halo novel written by a Bungie employee (Joseph Staten) who also wrote the storyline for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. Halo: Cole Protocol is a book detailing the story of captain Keys from Halo:CE Halo: Cryptum and Halo: Primordium (and the Silentium which is to be released in Jan. 2013) all take place 100,000 years BEFORE any of the Halo storylines, book or game. Halo: Glasslands and Halo: The Thursday war are both books that take place between Halo 3 and Halo 4. So yes, they all fit canon, and it is that way on purpose, Halo franchise director and former Bungie community badass FrankO' conner has said that it is important to not have any contradictions in the Halo universe and that all media released be it a game or a book will tie in to each other.
Posted by: Fusionstudent The only non cannon material ever created was halo reach on xbox360, halo wars, and halo legends. The book the fall of reach was way better and ties better into Halo 1 etc.
Nope. All of that was canon except Odd One Out.
Posted by: lime013 Game > Canon. I view the books as the expanded universe that not many people care about.
Which is exactly why you probably don't know 10 percent of what halo is.
Posted by: CrazyHUNTER 95 I will believe what I want to. I am very knowledgeable about my canon. THE GAMES AND BOOKS WILL NEVER CO-EXIST. Now, before you try to prove me wrong why don't you try reading about the inconsistencies in both the books and the games. I'm always up for discussion, but just because a developer wants to tell me what is and isn't canon doesn't meant I have to accept it. It's the same as Bioware's incident with ME3. The fans spoke up and got what they wanted. Note: I was looking for the thread on the inconsistencies, but I don't have nearly enough time to search for it. It was quite long though. Refusing to believe all canon is like refusing to believe that water, earth, wind, and fire are not elements. Also didn't Bioware NOT finish the DLC?

Whenever an author starts writing a Halo book from now on, they have a meeting with 343i and are told what they can and cannot mess with for continuity's sake. For example, when Greg Bear started writing Silencium, I'm sure 343 told him what was going on in Halo 4 so he could build around that and not make conflicting stories. I think it's really cool how closely these guys are working together.
Posted by: grey101
Posted by: CrazyHUNTER 95 It's actually entirely up to you. Personally I believe in the book canon over the game canon. It's almost impossible to accept both due to the overwhelming amount of contradictions between the two.
You do not decide what is canon and what is not there are also little contradictions between the sources excluding one well also including glasslands.
Yeah once again, I was kind of inquiring as to if there were frequent contradictions, and if there was a specific book that might be considered "inferior", and generally rejected whenever there is a conflict, etc. It seems the general consensus is that every book has Bungie and/or 343's hand in it, and their full support and acceptance, and that therefore all of the books are fully indoctrinated pieces of the Halo universe.

It's almost impossible to accept both due to the overwhelming amount of contradictions between the two.
Actually you have no say in canon. Those who are managing Halo are. I've said this once and I'll say it again. Refusing to believe certain aspects of canon is like refusing to believe that earth, wind, fire, and water are not elements. Clearly that's a misplaced belief.

They are canon. Bungie and 343 accepts them.

That was me saying random things don't belong while things like you suggested would be fine. Even though it would be more of an alternate universe than non canon.
