Halo 2 Vista still works on Windows 8!

Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone that's still interested in Halo 2 Vista. I finally got around to testing it today and in the latest version of Windows 8, Games For Windows Live finally works again which means Halo 2 Vista works as well. In previous releases of Windows 8, GFWL wouldn't work or install at all which means it was impossible to run Halo 2. But in the latest Release Preview of Windows 8, Halo 2 Vista works perfectly. Even Play 'N Tray still works. Interestingly enough, I feel compatibility issues with Halo 2 Vista are gone in Windows 8. I recall people had numerous compatibility issues in Windows 7. For those of you who want to play Halo 2 but can't because of Windows 7, try a dual boot setup with Windows 8 and install Halo 2 on Windows 8. On my system, Halo 2 seemed to only work with Windows 7 using a clean install. An OEM installation of Windows 7 wouldn't work with Halo 2. Windows 8, being a clean install, works, but I don't know if OEM installations of Windows 8 in the future will make a difference. What this also means is that once Windows 8 tablets (x86 tablets) come out, you'll be able to play Halo 2 on a tablet (not sure why you would). The higher-end Windows 8 tablets will have Intel Core i5's or higher and HD Graphics 4000. I know Intel HD Graphics is terrible compared to nVidia or AMD, but I think by HD Graphics has improved to the point where it can run Halo 2 Vista at playable framerates. Unfortunately Halo 2 is not optimized for touchscreens, but perhaps there are programs that give you a virtual gamepad (if there is one already please let me know) that will allow you to play Halo 2 on a touchscreen. I'm running the 64-bit edition of Windows 8 on an Alienware M14x (Core i7 2820QM and GeForce GT 555M).

 • Good to know. Now if only Windows 8 would fix stupid teammates, then I'd upgrade!

 • Chill, Syx. For the first time since he showed up, General Heed's right about something. Pretty much every single tester who has had his hands on the RTM build of Windows 8 has stated that very few third-party apps are hindered in any way by the OS, and Steam in particular runs without any problems whatsoever. Gaben just went crazy for a bit, that's all.

 •
Posted by: Dr Syx They're not worried one bit about that. They know for a fact that Microsoft doesn't get the PC gamer and that was made clear with their attempt at GFWL. I've seen absolutely nothing suggesting they're getting it right this time, either. If he is afraid that Microsoft's store will overcome Steam, it's not because he believes it'll be better. It'll be because of the limitations to third party applications and the fact that you'll have their app store on your PC by default. Microsoft has tried many times to take over the PC market and now, after failing so many times, they're trying to play dirty by making it hard for anyone else to compete with them. Instead of trying to do things right the honest way by making it a great service, they're going to attempt to break the legs of their opponents.
The App Store is necessary though if Microsoft expects Windows to be able to compete in the tablet market. And even if it's the default app store, it still doesn't prevent people from installing steam. I doubt consumer confusion will lead people to stop using Steam. I think anyone that uses Steam right now knows enough about game distribution marketplaces to install Steam on Windows 8 which is just as simple as ever. Only on Windows RT is Steam in its current form going to be incompatible. Valve only has to worry about Windows RT. That's the only Windows platform where they won't be able to provide Steam in its current form. They'll probably be limited to some kind of Steam app like on current smartphones and tablets. Also, the Windows App Store, in terms of gaming, is targeted more towards the casual tablet gamer with games like Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja. The Xbox Live launch games for Windows 8 are all casual touch friendly tablet games. I don't really think Xbox Live on Windows 8 is meant to directly compete with Steam. I think that's what Games For Windows Live is still for unless Microsoft ends the service and transfers all the games to Xbox Live on Windows 8.

 •
Posted by: Dr Syx The reason Gabe Newell is worried about Windows 8 is because of how closed it is. Hell, it almost seems as if they're directly targeting the PC gaming market. Any PC developer should be worried at this point and it's sure as hell not because Microsoft is going to deliver a great service. They're afraid because it looks like Microsoft is trying to kill the market off. Gabe never complained about Apple's closed environment because there was never a real market there to begin with for games. Valve's market with Steam is heavily focused on Steam. It didn't make any difference to his business or gaming in general whereas this will be a massive blow.
But Windows 8 is not that closed in general. Only the Windows Store and Xbox Live app are closed. With the exception of Windows RT, Steam still works just as fine on Windows 8 and isn't restricted in anyway. I suppose if Valve were to launch a metro version of Steam, there might be a few limitations but even so, I doubt valve had much interest in developing metro apps anyways. They're just worried about Xbox Live competing with Steam directly on PC's.

From what I can tell, Xbox Live on Windows 8is already better than GFWL. While it doesn't offer AAA titles yet, mostly just simpler touch based games, I see potential. It even has Steam's Gabe Newell worried to the point he'd criticize Windows 8 for its closed environment when really not much has changed and he never complained when Apple did the same thing with Mac OS X app store.

Perhaps I'll get the Surface tablet, we'll see. Either way, to boost the sales of Windows 8 tablets, all you have to do is show off a few of the most popular PC games and you're all good to go. It doesn't necessarily have to be Halo 2 Vista, but since Halo is a well known franchise, many people will be able to relate to it.

 •
Posted by: the omega man117 The fact that it works better on Windows 8 does not make the game better. Heck, you could almost say that it makes it even worse because it took this long to find a way to make the damn thing work. Now, lets see if Windows 8 can make the game tolerable to play to anyone that isn't either EXTREMELY bored or has ADHD and loves to see bullets hit people that are five feet away from the targeting reticule.
Regardless of current perceptions of Halo 2 Vista, it would be a killer app/game to have on a Windows 8 tablet. It's still a fact that not many people have heard about Halo 2 Vista. By people, I mean Xbox 360 gamers who spend limited to no time playing PC games. I still get messages while playing Halo 2 Vista from people on xbox asking me how I'm playing Halo 2 on the Xbox again or how I'm playing Xbox on the PC and other ridiculous things like that. Anyways, the point is, picture this scenario. A group of people are sitting together using tablets. One has an iPad, another has an Android tablet, and the third has a Windows 8 tablet. All three are comparing their tablets. The iPad owner brags about his retina display and having more apps & HD games like Angry Birds. The Android tablet owner brags about having better hardware and customization with a Tegra 3 processor so Angry Birds runs faster. The Windows 8 tablet owner, who was quiet the whole time, finally speaks. He says that his tablet not only has a quad-core x86 Core i5 CPU which can run Angry Birds better and faster than the Android and iOS tablets, but he also has Halo 1 & 2 on his tablet as well as numerous AAA games including Crysis, Gears of War, GTA, and so on. All of a sudden, the Android tablet and iPads look like children's toys compared to the Windows 8 tablet. The phrase "Halo 2 on a tablet" or "AAA console games on a tablet" are not frequently spoken in the world of tablets today. Halo 2 Vista is still technically a AAA game and being able to play it or any AAA game on a tablet makes that tablet much more valuable and non Windows tablet owners will get jealous thus boosting sales of Windows 8 tablets. Essentially, Halo 2 Vista can still be fun for showing off to your friends who are under the idea that Windows isn't good on tablets or that Android/iOS is the best for tablets. I think Halo 2 Vista or any GFWL game would be good for marketing a Windows 8 tablet. Android tablets and iPad marketing show the tablets running the latest tablet games (Angry Birds or tablet versions of Mass Effect/Dead Space). Microsoft could one up them and show off all the top console/PC games running on a Windows 8 tablet. It will create a whole new market of gaming tablets similar to the rise of gaming laptops (lol). So those are just my opinions/ideas on the benefits of being able to run Halo 2 Vista and any GFWL game on Windows 8.
