Now, hear me out. They're mutated bears, yes, but look at their bodies. Peeling skin and fur falling out in patches, the fact that mutation only gave them greater strength and size, rather than special abilities. It seems that way to me, anyway. Does this seem plausible?
Also, in point Lookout there is a Yao Guai named Ruzka, who is seemingly over 200 years old. That, to me, indicates they're, like, ghoulified black bears.

Regular Ghouls are the same people they were before Ghoulification. Take Raul Tejada, for instance. Now, if there are feral and non-feral Yao Guai, I doubt the behavioral difference would be as evident as in humans. Perhaps the feral ones are solitary, or maybe there's very little behavioral difference, except that only non-ferals can be tamed at all.

Yao Guise, what's up?

Well, there are some Yao Guai that gaurd Merchants. So yeah, I'm guessing there are feral and non feral Yao Guai.
-
Perhaps. Never gave a Yao Guai a second thought unless I was perforating it with a high powered rifle.
