Is working at Bungie a job security nightmare?

Most of the job listings say something to the effect that employment may be project-based or temporary. That would really suck for a developer with specialized game dev skills. Do employees feel like they have to outshine others to keep from being let go? I'm envisioning that scene from The Dark Knight where there are three guys and two sharp sticks. Is that how it works at Bungie?

 • Sort of. I wish I worked there. I would love having gold text while keeping my current coup.

 • This is one thing im nervous about in the future. I'm hoping to go to college in computer science and computer designing and find a job suitable for me at a studio, but I feel like I my work just wont be good enough for the people around me.

 • I would imagine just like with a lot of other jobs with stress and deadlines, as long as you do your job well and keep on track, you will be working at the job (bungie) for as long as you work hard for the company. But if you slack off and miss a deadline or screw something up, yeah your job might be up in the air.

Screwing around with GIMP and PS all day isn't all fun and games... Anyways, I would imagine that if a employee managed to get hired, they would be too much of an asset to get rid of, in a way. They only hire the few they need, and that are good and passionate enough. Chances are having people be fired or let go because of relative quality or other traits would be few and far between, and not a cold affair. [Edited on 07.03.2012 1:07 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: DrBunsenHoneydew Personally, I don't feel I'm in competition with my peers around the studio. Part of that is a product of our hiring practices. As a rule, we hire people who are passionate at being good at their jobs. There's enough self-applied pressure to perform that the studio doesn't have to add any extra. Sure, because I work in the games industry my job's less secure than it would be if I were usability testing accounting software, but I'm happy to trade a little security for the chance to work on a product I really believe in.
And that my friends is the attitude that ensures job security at Bungie.

 • Like any other job, you have to work hard to keep it I suppose. You really have to stand out from the crowd from what I know. Working in the gaming industry is the most wanted job now really. Who said it's impossible to get fired from Bungie? It's possible to get fired from any job. Just don't screw up and you're all good. As for layoffs, they do happen and it is an ugly part of life. I don't know if I'll ever work in the industry, but if I ever do I will try Bungie, along with any other gaming company that is hiring. It's just that Bungie requires a lot of experience so I would need a lot of that first. Even with a lot of experience, you still can get fired for screwing up badly I suppose.

Whenever I read them, I hear them in Dr. Bunsen's voice. OT: Well, no job is secure in this climate. But, since Bungie is getting even bigger with their contract with Activision, I can't imagine them letting a boatload of people go.

 • I imagine it is more a nightmare to get in that it is a nightmare on the job. One benefit of an intensive interview process.

Last I checked, when you are hired on to Bungie as a full time staff member, you are given Bungie Stock and literally "own" a piece of Bungie. Since Bungie is an independent game company, the employees own the company, not someone else.

 • Of course none of us knows what goes at Bungie internally. We can only speculate, unless Bungie themselves chimes in. I am aware of a few anecdotes which make Bungie seem like they really value their employees, but have little tolerance for people they don't need. When Skip was in IT, he said he was impressed with the quality of all the employees. He said in every other place he'd worked, he quickly out shined everyone because he was just plain better and more motivated to be excellent. However, at Bungie he said he was surprised because everyone he worked with was just as good and as motivated as he was. He thought it was great that everyone he encountered was as good at their job as they could possibly be. I don't know if Skip is still there though. I have not heard anything from him in years, and I know he was contracted at least at the beginning of his tenure. So on the whole, I'd say Bungie is a pretty secure place to work. Bungie has been growing and seemingly changing quite a bit lately. I don't know if any portion of the anecdotes and my own inference from seeing Bungie do what Bungie does still applies. It could be exactly the same, despite being a 300+ employee company now. Perhaps we'll see. The industry in general doesn't seem to be very secure though. People seem to bounce around a lot depending on what kind of studio they work at, and what specifically they can do.

 • Video Games are a very uncertain industry when it comes to jobs whether you're working for an independent studio or one of the colossi, Studios shrink and grow during projects for the games all the time.

 •
Posted by: Canadian Bac0nz Bungie also hires contract employees, and it's made clear to them that they're working for a certain amount of time.
There's probably permanent contractors also. Contractor doesn't imply temporary. But, it does allow Bungie to let the contractor go without notice or reason (not that they do this).

 • Well, Bungie being a pretty prestigious place, I imagine that their hiring policies are fairly stringent. So regular employees are probably pretty secure if they don't -blam!- up too badly. Bungie also hires contract employees, and it's made clear to them that they're working for a certain amount of time. Contract employees can become full-time Bungie employees, but I imagine that's more likely the exception than the norm. The people who are let go after a project are the kind who should be aware that that's probably what's going to happen.

Just because you like their games and they have some cool dudes doesn't mean this doesn't go on.
They value their employees greatly. However, if someone is not working at max their potential then it isn't unreasonable to remove them from the company. It's still a business.
I'm sure they do but people are acting like they can somehow speak for Bungie.

I know all jobs are temporal in the long run. Just curious if there's a big staff up then staff down plan.

 • I think it's safe to say none of us really know how it is working there due to the fact that none of us work there but based off of how they threat their employees and us, the community, I would think that Bungie isn't cruel when it comes to job security.
