Our world has become so entitled.

People think that they deserve what other's have, simply 'because'. People think that they deserve the same education as another person, even when they've worked less and have chosen to not put the effort into attaining grants, scholarships, federal loans, and private loans (all of which are very accessible, anyway). People think that they deserve healthcare, even when they made bad educational decisions, bad career decisions, and just 'because'. World, you need to realize something: You're not entitled to -blam!-. Watch this video. She explains exactly why you aren't entitled to things that negatively affect other people. Let me repeat that: YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE FROM OTHER PEOPLE. You want to know what you should do if you want a good education? Go to a decent public school. Instead of living in the -blam!- ghetto, why don't you move your damn family into low-income in a suburban area? I know it's not that easy, but I do know of a multitude of families that live in low-income housing, in suburban areas. Nice suburban areas, might I add. So even while you or your parents may be unemployed, you can still get a decent public education. Want a good higher education? Do good in public school. Apply for scholarships. Do well enough for grants. Take out a federal loan like every other student CAN do. Yes, all of you can do that. And do what other people do, too: take out loans with banks. Yes, YOU can do that, too. Want better healthcare? Get a higher education that means something. Don't get a job in women studies, because there aren't jobs worth -blam!- with that degree. Go into engineering. Go into business. Go into law. Go into medicine. Those all have GREAT job opportunities, even with a fairly high unemployment rate. You'll get a well-paying job that can support not only yourself, but your family, and all their healthcare needs. So in a concluding statement (and a tl;dr for those who can't read), take responsibility for your life. People don't owe you -blam!-. EDIT: I should probably mention that I do support universal child healthcare. Children didn't do anything to be put into the situation they're in, so if they're in poverty, they do deserve healthcare. [Edited on 06.29.2012 3:39 PM PDT]

See how people couldn't resist throwing out insults because their opinions differ? That's one reason you aren't allowed to discuss politics here.

So, what gives her any more creedence in this debate? The second she started on "Obamacare" I knew she was a right wing nutjob. That phrase was created to demonize something that when looked at as individual pieces is deemed needed, is viewed as bad when looked at whole. No one seems to know anything about the debate, and are relying on others to do the critical thinking for them. •
Posted by: xxiNoSc0p3dJfKx Oh look another middle class white boy who's had every opportunity handed to him on a platter.
Wrong. My father died when I was eight. My mom works a job while also going back to school to better herself. So stop making assumptions.
Posted by: xxiNoSc0p3dJfKx You think people enjoy living in the ghetto? You think they refuse to leave?
No, of course they don't "enjoy living in the ghetto". But shouldn't it be obvious that unemployment really isn't that bad of a thing? I'm not supporting this by any means, but it's really not that hard to pack your family up and move an hour away to a suburban town. There are plenty of them with low-income housing, perfect for people who don't have much to their name.
Posted by: xxiNoSc0p3dJfKx You're just a selfish ranting moron who's never been exposed to the reality beyond your personal lifestyle.
I've already explained the fact that I'm considered poor, by many standards. I just don't agree with having -blam!- handed to me, especially at the expense of other's.
Posted by: xxiNoSc0p3dJfKx Try having a father in prison and a traumatized mother working two jobs just to support her children and then tell me if success on your own is so easy. That moving out of the ghetto means simply walking away.
My father's dead, so we're in the same boat of being "dad-less". I'll admit that your mother has it more difficult (being traumatized), but my mom is in graduate school and works a job. So we're still very similar there. I work for what I want. I have a job. I know what it's like to be down and out. But here's the thing: I don't expect other people to bring me up, "just because".

You're the one who belittled her and made it seem like her thoughts were lesser than your own. You did this by saying that the "attorneys and scholars" on your side are much more educated than her. Yet, when I use the same argument against you, I'm somehow being a dumbass. Secondly, she's not a "right-wing nutjob". She's a libertarian. This means that she agrees with a lot of you liberals on social issues. But since you already think that you're entitled to healthcare, it doesn't matter anyway. Anyways, this is my opinion. I'm not "regurgitating" another person's viewpoint. I used her opinion as a second voice for the argument.

  • Well, I agree 100% with the subject but not with the body of the post, lol. As someone who holds equality of opportunity very dear as a societal goal, I feel people are best able to create and take advantage of opportunities in life when they don't have to worry about the basics-- such as healthcare and education. I believe in giving people the chance to work hard and achieve their goals, but when they're stuck with health issues or literally aren't educated enough to know how to work hard, doing so is rather difficult. Education especially is IMO the great, empowering facilitator in pushing society forward. [Edited on 06.29.2012 3:42 PM PDT]

Then why do we have it better here in Sweden than you have it in the US. We have free healthcare, we get paid for going to school, our taxes are higher and we don't spend ridiculous amounts of money on our military. • Everyone needs healthcare insurance. Period. It prevents people from gaming the system. Also, some people just can't afford to pay for their procedures, and it's not their faults that they were born into poverty/dire circumstances (though you can blame the parents...but we won't go there). My father hates hearing stories of young people being turned away from the procedures, etc that they need because they are struggling financially. The problem that comes from this bill is this. Insurance companies will now have to accommodate everyone, even those that are at risk of needing constant healthcare. In other terms, patients that will be very costly for insurance companies to pay for. So how will these insurance companies pay for their rising costs? Two ways. 1) Rationing healthcare. I'm not bashing Canada at all. I love it, and its people. But from my relatives, family friends, and just random people I have talked to, I hear that at times seeing a primary care doctor takes a LONG time. I can't imagine how long it would take to see a specialist. There isn't enough medicine (procedures, actual space, staff personnel, you name it) to go around for the increased numbers of people. As is, hospitals are already pretty stretched (at least where I work). 2) Insurance companies will conserve money by paying hospitals less (meaning staff members get paid less). I know people will jump on me for saying this but a doctor that earns 60% of what he earned prior to this bill will not work as hard as he would if he was earning 100% of that amount. It's just human nature. You work proportionately to the amount you get paid, and remember, it's all relative. If other jobs are earning almost as much, or more, as a doctor, and require less training (four to six years of medical school, internship/residency, fellowship for one specialty, another fellowship for a sub-specialty), than doctors will look at that job and work significantly less hard. Of course you will have those people who are just great people. They work as hard as possible for the betterment of society. I applaud them. But to ask that of the entire healthcare industry? Impossible. Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong. This is what I've been discussing with friends over the past few days.

  •
Posted by: Beyond hope The so called "Entitlement programs" should not affect everyone, as not everyone has a need for them.
It doesn't effect everyone.. Because if it did, you and I would probably be on them. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. No healthcare.. But I found out Healthcare is cheap for young people like me, $60-$80 a month. So I can fix that problem. I can't go to school, who's going to help me pay the debt.. No one? I'm turning 21 and work for $1 above the national minimum age.
