In Mass effect 2, Samara said there were only 3 ardat-yakshi in existence, her daughters. So if banshees are made from reaperfied ardat-yakshis, where the -blam!- did the reapers get them all from?
She says it when you're asking her about arkdat-yakshi when she requests your help for he loyalty mission.
This guy found it.

According to Samara, these are the only three living Ardat-Yakshi. However, less severe cases are supposedly more common, including up to 1% of the population. There is a scale of sorts. Samara was saying that her daughters were the only ones suffering from that severe of a case.

Did they ever say Banshees weren't just regular Asari, and they just happened to use the people at the Monastery first?

I never thought about that. I guess it doesn't make too much sense, and there would only be a small number of Banshees available throughout the whole game, instead of the amount of Banshees that we have to end up fighting.

The reapers didn't need to have the Ardat Yakshi to create banshees.
Banshees by definition are converted Asari that have either an active or latent tendency for being an Ardat Yakshi.

Also, If Ardat Yakshi are so rare, how could the Reapers field them on multiple planets simultaneously? Each Banshee lost would be a substantial loss for the Reaper forces.

Honestly, I think Banshees are just reaperfied Asari period.
