Why is Death Magnetic so underrated?
It's a great album IMO. Sure, James doesn't have the same growl. But the writing is great.
If the album was recorded pre-black album, I guarantee it would be looked at as highly as MoP, or AJFA.

As rich as they are, they could probably all live quite extravagantly for the rest of their lives if they never produced another thing. Plus they're so well known that even when they release bad albums they sell, because EVERYONE will hear about them (versus a lesser known band making a good album, that not many people will hear about, and therefore never listen to).

Metallica have been riding the success of their first 4 albums forever. They seriously need to buckle down and start producing real thrash music again...none of the bull-blam!- they have produced from the Black Album onwards. They used to define the Heavy Metal genre. Now they are so far up their own asses it's unreal.

TO be honest i really liked that album and i still have a few songs in my changer at the moment. I think one of the main componenets that made it a fantastic album was the fact Rick Rubin produced it. Most of the stuff he works with is great, especially Chilis

It's got a few good songs, a few hits and misses, and two pretty bad songs. All in all, it was a sloppy album with terrible recording and Lars can't play his instrument anymore, but still a milestone for Metallica who hasn't written anything of any real metal potential since 1991.

I don't think it's underrated, if anything, I think it might be a little overrated. It's not Hetfield's lack of a growl (I actually like his voice in DM even without the growling), it's the songs themselves. Most of them aren't imo, enjoyable enough to be as long as they are. The solos for instance are really long and complex, but they aren't all that enjoyable to listen to (I singled out the solos because they're what drag the songs out so long). The riffs are meh, not bad, but not all that impressive either. Just my opinion, take it for what you will

I definitely agree. I'd put it up with the Black Album in terms of quality, and I find myself listening to songs from the album fairly often nowadays.

All of their albums are Excellent...except St.Anger (and Lulubut that doesn't count). However Death Magnetic is nothing compared to Master of Puppets or Kill em All.
