Stargate is similar to Mass Effect in that we find a network of stargates leading around the galaxy and beyond, then defend Earth from various threats. Haven't looked at when it's set.
Battlestar focuses on the fact that Humans do not originate from Earth and in fact Earth is a long lost colony of the actual human race, who are at war with the robotic Cylons. The Cylons have almost obliterated the 12 other human 'tribes' and now the last battleship, the Galactica, must find the fabled colony on Earth.

The story behind BSG is that humanity made the Cylons as servants. Once those servants became aware they revolted from their slavery and pushed humanity off of its worlds. With our increasing reliance on technology to live, is this not believable?
The part I don't believe is how it takes place in the past. What happened to the entire crew? Their technology? If Hera was the "Eve" of the Cylons on Earth (aka, us), why did we have no warning about the danger of the machines or have any technology left over?
They abandoned technology. That's what Lee was telling everyone to do at the end. Hera was the most prolific breeder, making her our mitochondrial Eve,
Posted by: Blackened Log Perhaps in that sense, but I think that the overriding factor is the whole Earth is but a mystical colony of the real human race thing and yet we somehow have no damn idea about it kind of kills it in that respect.
If you are talking about the reimagined BSG, there is a very rich backstory about Earth as the 13th colony and the Final 5. Look it up on wikipedia. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen the show.

It makes for an amazing series ending, but not so much in the believability department. [Edited on 02.25.2012 2:14 PM PST]

Battlestar Galactica is pretty cool, but I think SG-1 is more believable The only difference between SG-1 and the real world is the discovery of the Stargate network. There's no futuristic technology or anything like that before they discover how the Stargate works. Yes, BSG takes place thousands of years in the past, but still, it's just not believable when compared to SG-1. To those saying how the Stargate wouldn't be able to be kept secret...what would you think if someone claimed that the US government had a top secret base where they sent soldiers through a portal to alien worlds? You'd think he was just a conspiracy theorist, just like all of the "hurr durr Area 51 has alieunz for real, trust me, I worked there" [Edited on 02.25.2012 2:07 PM PST]

Stargate wins here.

Farscape.
Posted by: X13 Battlestar Galactica I doubt that the US government would be able to keep that kind of thing secret.
they would because wikilinks doesn't exist in the stargate universe.

SG-1 because humans are from earth. IN BSG earth is some lost colony.
