Since its appearance in Halo 2 and its evolution in Halo 3/ODST, its safe to say the enemy is now a staple in the Halo franchise. How should they be further refined in Halo: Reach?
The problem with Scarabs is that when they appeared we lost infantry combat in favor of vehicles. That's just my little nitpick about the subject.
*shrugs*
Halo 3's model is alright, just the size of a Phantom with legs. The "loading bay" should be a tad bigger, to allow some more Covenant to fit inside (and allow Ghosts or a Spectre to be parked). I am aware of the mining variant, I'm just not sure if it will fit in Halo: Reach. If it does, by all means, who wouldn't want a second Scarab model?
How to destroy a Scarab...well there's always boarding it and destroying the Hunter bits. Perhaps killing the pilots and activating the convenient self-destruct mechanism will work? I don't know about destroying Scarabs while not boarding one. I mean, it's possible, but I can't think of any better ideas other than the extra armor in Halo 3.

Like I said, they would be like Phantoms. You don't have to destroy one every time you see one. Coastal Highway is a good example of this, what with all the random Scarabs walking about.
Scarabs and Engineers? That would be an interesting concept, an Engineer(s) floating by a Scarab, ready to fix the energy core-thingy or provide shields.
CONTENTS
This is based on Halo 3's campaign, where there were three different Scarab encounters. Of course, if depending on the situation, the crew members could be randomized.
There could be the usual grouping of some Grunts, Elite(s), and a couple Jackals for good defensive measure. On the lower level could either be more Grunts, Jackals, or Hunters (on Heroic or Legendary). Elites should stay on top (or at least start there).
Another formation is an mostly all Jackal crew, with half a dozen normal Jackals on board and 1-2 Jackal Snipers to stir up some trouble. The lower level would contain a swarm of Drones. This grouping is for long-range, not meant to be boarded in gameplay; this Scarab is probably walking by or dropping off a Wraith.
Heavy weapons. Grunts with Fuel Rods, Zealots, etc. This is for some crazy vehicular action that plagued much of Halo 3's campaign. The lower level would contain some Spec-Ops Elites but not many. This Scarab is ready to dump some Ghosts (or a Spectre :D) into the battle field.

In my opinion, a Scarab appearance would be a good way to start (or end) a set. However, to reduce repetitiveness, they would only appear every 1-3 sets, either to start it off or to drop off those Zealots.
For the most part, it would act like a Phantom: come in, crouch down, poop out some Covies. Gunners could be sniped for points, an invisible wall blocks off entry, the works. After all is said and done, the Scarab will walk away.
If the map is large enough the Scarab will stay, walk a few laps, do what they usually do. Phantoms can still come in and drop off other enemies. Wait too long, though, and they will go away. That's it. No easy Killpocalypse or buttload of points for you.
Posted by: El Traffic Cone i am thinking of something like maybe an older model of the scarab. I would like it if it was much more MASSIVE and less efficient and more clumsy. and i also agree with tibetz.
Posted by: Tibetz You should be able to kill scarabs head on. sure, boarding it would make it easier, but nothing would be more satisfying than blowing the armor off a scarab and detonating the core instead of a meltdown.

That would make an excellent set-piece in Campaign. Just because H2's encounter was linear doesn't mean it wasn't exciting. Also, I updated the thread.
