• I think at some point, Bungie wanted to actually make money from producing billion dollar franchises, instead of simply being Microsoft employees.

 • I've wondered this too. I just figured you need to cut a couple sickly branches to grow.

OT: It's mostly because Bungie split from Microsoft and wants to do something new and fresh. Hell, maybe they'll return to Halo one day? Only time will tell. [Edited on 02.04.2012 1:32 AM PST]

 • Because they'd been working on the same project for ten years and it was time to start something new. Which is something I'm happy about, the gaming industry needs more new games.

 • IIRC: I think they were under contract to make 5 halo games. This explains why they pretty much crapped out halo reach. They just wanted to move on and do what THEY wanted to do.

 •
Posted by: TopsideRabbit So why is 343 making a Halo 4 then?(not that I don't want them too)
Microsoft wants money. Halo games make money and are an incentive for prospective customers to go with Xbox. I understand the confusion. I'll give a brief history. Microsoft bought Bungie in 2000, and with Bungie all the Bungie IP (Halo included) at the time. So Bungie is a division of Microsoft. In 2007 Bungie became independent again (the details of why are not public so all we can do is guess) but was still under contract to develop two more Halo games under the Microsoft banner as part of the deal. When the current owners of Bungie took over the firm they did not get Halo back. Around this time Microsoft created 343, a division of Microsoft just like Bungie was, and they are now making Halo games.

 • It's disappointing to see them go, I know, but it's necessary: 1) Bungie wants to be more independent 2) Bungie wnats to make a new IP 3) Microsoft is a control freak 4) Reach deviated a lot from the previous titles, that alone shows they wanted to do something different.

 • Because Bungie realized that they were getting stale and didn't want to be known as the developer that exclusively did Halo, maybe. If they stayed with Microsoft they would have done Halo, after Halo, after Halo, after Halo until the franchise dies and Microsofts liquefies Bungie. You think they'd want that?
