Really, what was the Covenant trying to do? Remove a tiny slit out of a mountain?

I always thought it was cut in half by a covenant glassing beam. I'm probably wrong though.
Posted by: Wazooty There is nothing to suggest that the mountain with the slice missing in Halo Reach is Mechanite mountain (under which castle base is located).
Other than that Noble 6 died near it. This kinda hints towards it being the one, Because there were no more transports off of Reach, and the date of 6 delivering Cortana to the Pillar is different to the date of his death. So this suggests he travelled for a while, BUT, He also knew that Carter had ordered Jun to escort Halsey to Castle base, So perhaps he/she figured that Castle base was the best/only place to go. then 6 could've got to the area they did in Lone Wolf, and considering you're up on a platform, 6 could have arrived at the Castle base co-ordinates then looked around for the entrance but then gets swarmed and killed.
Posted by: AGENT BL4CK Just in case you dont want to read the book... When the Spartan-II Red Team was deployed to the surface of Reach, Frederic-104, Red Leader, split the Spartans into four groups. Team Delta was assigned to secure Menachite Mountain as a fallback point for Red Team if necessary. Team Delta consisted of all the seriously wounded Spartans and the surviving Marines of Charlie Company, but only some Spartans actually managed to reach the mountain. Team Beta was destroyed and contact with Team Gamma was lost, so only Frederic-104 and Kelly-087 managed to actually fall back to the mountain when the Covenant began glassing Reach. The covenant wanted in due to the Forerunner artifact that lay deep within the mountain. As the Covenant surrounded the mountain, the surviving Spartans managed to enter the facility using the secret Oly Oly Oxen Free code, where they encountered Doctor Catherine Halsey, who had stayed behind to clear information and data inside the base should the Covenant gain entrance. Halsey treated the Spartans of their various wounds as the Covenant began to dig in the mountain searching for the Forerunner artifact. The humans only barely escaped with experimental prototype weapons and MJOLNIR Mark V armor upgrades, and as they retreated, they destroyed what was left of the mountain behind them to annihilate CASTLE base.
Damn it! You beat me to the punch. Usually it's me who ends up being the novel-nerd and quoting the precise events of the plot to explain stuff. However, sir, I salute you for being as addicted to the books as I am.

The Fall of Reach explains it.
-
Yeah, that.
-
i think he means the extremely big double peaked mountain that appears in almost every campaign mission.
-
Are you talking about the one in Halo Reach, or Menachite Mountain?
-
What mountain are you talking about?
