Well, I tried to post this somewhere else but got not response. Anyone else had this problem before?
I lag from time to time, and it seems that all the time since I switched to a new ISP, there are just some friends that I always have network problems with. We can send each other messages, but not join each other's parties. We usually have to get a third party to start a custom game and invite us both to be able to switch and play MM. But even then, there's not really that much lag. People tell me that our ISP's just don't get along.
That said, the other day all of a sudden I got on Live and I was just lagging horribly. I could get in a party, but not understand the talk coming from teammates or anyone in the game. Just choppyness, cutting in and out. Everyone in a couple games was lagging bad. I signed out quickly(to prevent banning) and thought I'd try to restart all my stuff: modem, router, xbox, even the TV. I signed back in, and it kept happening.
I then logged out, powered off all again, and tried another xbox with account recovery. Same thing happened. It is important to note that I used the same game disc everytime. It is kinda scratched but not that bad. I thought maybe that could be a reason(for loading old maps, game data, etc.), so I rented a different copy and made sure it was pretty scratch free. I logged in and ran into no trouble. Problem solved, perhaps.
Now this may sound kinda stupid, but is it possible that if a disc is scratched, if even just a bit, it can cause you and others to lag so bad that not even the comm system will work? My rented copy is due back soon and I feel I need to buy another copy now. I don't want a refund or anything, I feel it is my fault by leaving the disc in my xbox from time to time. That is the only way it could have gotten scratched in the first place, because if it's not in the console, it's in a case. Is this all just a case of poor xbox and game care?

If you were using a scratched disk, wouldn't say its unreadable?

It could be your NAT on your router is set to Moderate or Strict, thats what XBL support told me when i had that problem, just call your ISP provider and ask them to make it open

This happens to me, and no it shouldn't cause lag all it should do it give you trouble loading when you first insert it into your xbox/xbox360

I thank everyone for their inputs very much. To the guy who said I have dial-up, no I don't. You can't get on Live with dial-up. It has to be high speed. The lowest I know that you can get on Live with is like 786K or something. What is this NAT thing, never heard of it, and I'd love to solve that problem. As for ping-testing my connection, I dunno how. I've heard some people say that it's not a reliable indicator anyway, maybe it is, hmm...I can't swap discs 'cause the rented one has a sticker on it, and I won't try to take it off. I also wanna say that I have those blurry problems too, with the old disc that is. When I go to the first screen, sometimes the title "Halo 2" takes a couple seconds to show up. It's just a blurry bar thingee until it changes to the regular title. Another thing I forgot to say earlier, when I was having the lag problem, my xbox would freeze for a couple seconds when I was in a pregame lobby. It did that too in other menus. I never had to restart the box to combat the freezing, it only lasted a few seconds. I had the blurryness and freezing problems before that day of bad lag, but not nearly as bad. Maybe it was all just a combination of the scratched disc along with my ISP lagging that night or something. I got on Bnet that night too, and my IE was taking forever to load pages, but I saw some threads in the underground where other people were having trouble on the site that night. So much confusion.*shrugs* Thanks again, anymore input is appreciated.

No, it's your ISP. Sometimes ISP's have equipment failure's that will cause lag. I get it all the time. Wait a few days and you should be back with optimum connection. As for your friends, try turning your NAT to open and you should be able to join them without a thrid party.

well if the rented disc is working fine then why dont u return ur scratched disc and keep the rented copy

When l was running my scratched up disc on my xbox it took forever to get on live, meaning the menu and everything would be very blurry for 5 minutes or so before it came into focus. l select live from the main menu, wait in the blurriness for 5 more minutes and so forth. Once l got into a match l experienced no lag however. And when l traded my xbox in for a 360 the same scratched up disc runs like new on the 360.

Spec Dont listen to them, I didnt find your argument overwhelming. Anyways, my personal opinion and thats all it is I would say YES, it is very probable that it does lag if your disc is very very scratched. I say this because my disc is Scratched and sometimes when I play on Live I try to move around and my xbox takes a lil bit of time to load everything in other words there is a small pause, then I check my pin and its red and the game starts to "catch out" with the network. But dont think it happens all the time it happens to me like once in a blue and when it does I take the disc out and make the xbox load it again so it doesnt persist. Sometimes makes me want to buy another disc but no way my xbox will scratch it again so there is no point in doing that.

it is highly unlikely that a scratched disc would cause lag. You probably don't have a "stable" connection to XBL
-
you did'nt give us a speed check or ping check or anything that will tell you if its okay which you should of said in the beginning. my guess off the cuff is you have dial up which sucks. just giving you the facts no flame here.

Have you switched back to the old copy and tried it again?

Well, at least I used periods. I'll throw some in, if it might help generate a response. Better? [Edited on 8/25/2006]

Were there any spacing, line breaks or structure to that post I would've read it. Not to be rude, but it's too overwhelming as it is. Regarding the topic title, a scratched disc will not cause network related lag, only some texture popping and possibly sound issues.
