Now before I get started on this topic I hope that you all will understand that this is my opinion and only my thoughts. I'm going to present to you my opinion and provide you with some personal experiences that I've had that lead me to this opinion. I urge all of you to post your thoughts and feel free to disagree. Just please do so respectfully. Thanks
Earlier today I was thinking about ODST and the Halo franchise in general and I began to think if that 30 seconds of fun had been lost. I remember reading countless interviews about how Bungie always believed that the "30 seconds of fun" was vital to the success of any game, especially ones they created. I remember hearing those words years ago, before Halo 2 came out, and I thought they definitely nailed it. Halo 1 CE was amazing, I spent hours and hours playing that game and I instantly fell in love with the Xbox once I had beaten the campagin on Co-op with a friend. This was a big statement considering I was a Nintendo fanboy from the start. In my head I immediately compared Bungie studios to the likes of "Rare" and other top developers in my head. Goldeneye had been pushed aside and Halo CE was my new favorite game.
Halo 2 came out and a lot had changed, and in my opinion, gotten worse. I still bought it and tried defending it for three years to other disbelievers, until I finally realized that I just wasn't having fun anymore. I mean sure, compared to other Xbox games out at the time it was great, but compared to Halo and the legacy Halo CE created in my head, it just felt too subpar. Halo 3 came out and I seemed to get the same feeling, and while it was much better than Halo 2 (once again my opinion) it still left me feeling short changed.
Then ODST was announced and was described as boasting features such as single weilding, lack of high jumping, and a lot of Halo 1 roots. I immediately got excited and the fact that it had four player co-op meant that I had to definitely try this game. I've played it, (still haven't beaten it) and while I like it more than Halo 2 and 3, I still feel it doesn't live up to the Halo 1 legacy.
Halo 1 was so simple and fun, yet complex. It was so perfect in every way and let's face it, without it Halo 2 and 3 would have never come to life.
Halo Reach is coming out and yet once again the expectations are grand, even in my head, but do you guys think that Bungie will be able to recapture the 30 seconds of fun?
Posted by: Phynixblack I know a sure fire way to love this next game. Expect nothing. Demand nothing. Allow yourself to think of other titles for a while. You have a while before REACH Beta. Get into other titles a bit if you are antsy. When REACH Beta comes along, go into it as if you had never played the rest. Wipe your expectations away. Give this game what it will want, a clean, fair, slate. Then and only then will you love it. Players are suffering now because they let the "I WANT" syndrome infect their minds over ODST, now it is out, it is great, but they can't like it because they expected it to be the second coming of Jesus Christ.
excellent post.
