So I recently received an Art of Halo book. While reading it, I came upon several cool Bungie facts that some of you may not know. Large amounts of epic, incoming!
Interesting Bungie Facts
1. The list of Bungie games in order: Gnop (1990), Operation Desert Storm (1991), Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete (1992), Pathways into Darkness (1993), Marathon (1994, wins MacWorld World Class Award, Macuser Editor's Choice, and GAMES Magazines's Top 100), Marathon 2: Durandal (1995, for Mac), Marathon 2: Durandal (1996, for Windows 94), Marathon Infinity (1996), Abuse (1996), Weekend Warrior (1997), Myth: The Fallen Lords (1997), Myth 2: Soulblighter (1998), Oni (2001), Halo: Combat Evolved (2001, for Xbox), Halo: Combat Evolved (2003, for Mac and PC).......(the rest is not listed in the book).
2. Bungie.net, the name of Myth's "metasever" that allowed for online chat and play, was founded in 1997. That website got retired and the "halo-era" website with the fanclub chapters was launched on November 15th, 2001. Then it got overhauled visually and code-wise in 2004 to prepare for Halo 2.
3. The original code name for Halo was "Monkey Nuts". Later on, it became codenamed "Blam!" because (quoting from the book) "Jason [Jones] couldn't bring himself to tell his mother he was working on something called 'Monkey Nuts'." The actual name "Halo" was created by longtime Bungie artist Paul Russel.
4. The origin of "Blam!": (quoting from the book) "The name 'Blam!' stemmed from folks yelling the word in Bungie offices when they were in Chicago. Located near a busy street, the Bungie team could hear numerous near-collisions between cars outside. 'You'd hear the screech of tires, and then nothing,' explained Robt McLees, 'so I'd yell "Blam!" Just so there was some sense of completion.'
5. Halo was originally meant to be a Live-Action Strategy Game. (When it was being worked on in 1997)
6. Before Marty O'Donnel became a full time composer and sound director, he worked his way through graduate school as a house painter.
7. When Robt McLees was working on designing new guns, they got to take a trip to South Carolina and hang out with several members of the U.S. Special Forces. They demonstrated weapon handling and tactical movement. Lieutenant Colonel Mark, their host, complimented Robt Mclees shooting as "Awesome. Very good. Good shooting."
I'll update the list if I find some more. Hope you enjoyed it!

Well this thread was disappointing.
-
Well those were some interesting facts about Bungie i didn't know
-
Somewhat of a neat read. Bungie should share more stories about how they came to be. I recall something about them shipping a game with the wrong disc or nearly doing so. It's been a long time and I don't have a link.

Marty wrote jingles for the Flintstones chewable vitamins commercials. His children sang in the commercials and he owns the rights to the music. He also did one for Mr. Clean, I don't know the exact year though. Sound familiar? [Edited on 01.05.2012 3:52 PM PST]
Posted by: Bru98usa If they ever make a Halo trilogy box set, I vow to show it off in every post. I Vow...
Since they no longer hold the rights to Halo, they can not make anything for Halo.
Posted by: Achronos You're missing a significant milestone in there... Bungie.net was the name of the Myth "metaserver" that allowed for multiplayer gaming and chat in Myth online play. The website companion of it was created for Myth 2 in 1997. That website was retired and the Halo-era site (with the fanclub chapters) launched on November 15th, 2001. This site was radically overhauled both visually and in the base code (as in, we threw out the old code completely) in April 2004, to ready ourselves for the onslaught of Halo 2. Bungie.net's basic systems have been iterated on significantly since then, but it is still recognizable as that 2004 site from a code point of view.
Posted by: HOOBLA 911
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55 re-launched? lolwut? Pretty sure they didn't get disbanded at all in between CE and Halo 2...
I'm just quoting it straight from the book, and it says "relaunched".

I distinctly remember skipping a class or two in college to go surf B.Net for a few hours aimlessly, right around the launch of Halo 2 way back in '04. That's when the background was all blue, and being able to see your Halo 2 medals was like the greatest thing since sliced bread! Ahh...the good ole' days. [Edited on 01.05.2012 11:09 AM PST]

Martin O'Donnell and Mike Salvatori originally contracted with Bungie in 1996 with their company TotalAudio. Marty became a full employee in 2000, 10 days before Microsoft purchased Bungie. Mike Salvatori stayed on the business side of the TotalAudio company and worked continued to work on Bungie titles, such as Oni and Halo, and other projects non-Bungie related. After 15 years of Mike Salvatori working with Marty on the audio of Bungie titles, he finally became a full time employee at Bungie in late 2011 and is currently working on the new title. That's all I got as of right now.
