Anyone know how to tell a replica from the real thing?
Posted by: Lol wolf mcquade On the top of the barrel it says Navy arms co. ridgefield N.J on the side it says black powder only 44 cal. and on the underside it has 2 list of numbers and EAP.
Okay then, it's an American-made replica. It isn't worth as much as an original, but it's still a very nice find! [Edited on 12.22.2011 1:24 PM PST]

What happens if it was thrown away after an armed robbery or even a murder? You should have contacted the police.
It was in my garage it was my fathers before he died. Never told anyone about it though.
Aww well, that's cool I guess. I thought you meant you found it laying in a field or something.
I don't think this would be a good gun for a crime way to heavy. lol

A revolver in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

As some people have said, try to look for some key features: Caliber, any trademarks, manufacturer, etc. Anything that can help you get a basic gist of the weapon. Then take it to an appraiser or someone who specializes in antique firearms
Posted by: Lol wolf mcquade Anyone know how to tell a replica from the real thing?
Are there any markings on the barrel or the frame? If you find anything refering to "Uberti" or "Pietta" then it's a replica. Both brands are Italian. (STILL a nice gun!!!) If there isn't anything about Colt or one of the two Italian brands anywhere on the gun, then you'll have to ask an expert. If it turns out to be an original, it could be worth A LOT, depending on the condition it's in. :) EDIT: Either way, it SHOULD be .36 caliber. If it's a .44 caliber, then it's probably one of the different models that was based on the Navy Colt. [Edited on 12.22.2011 1:16 PM PST]
