Should it be okay for professors to make makeup exams harder than the original exam? I missed my astronomy final yesterday because there was a typo in the syllabus that said it was at 10:30pm when it was actually at 10:30 am. after putting up a bit of a fight our professor agreed to let me and the couple others who missed it make it up, but the new exam will be more difficult and short answer, unlike the original everyone else took which was multiple choice. I said okay but I don't think it's right that we should have a more difficult test because he messed up the time in the syllabus. what do you think?

It's totally fair for teachers to make makeups or retakes harder than the original; you have time to study for it past the normal allotted time and you know that if you screw up on that one, then you're done for good.

Of course it's okay. Their exam, their rules.

The class normally meets from 8pm to 10:30pm as we do a lot of star related and night sky stuff.
So... writing a final to past midnight sounds legit? Still... Anyways, as previously stated, the teacher has to use different material. If you are well prepared, then difficulty should not be an issue.
what exactly makes you think it would be past midnight? it was a 50 question multiple choice exam that (supposedly) started at 10:30. There's no way that would take over an hour and a half. And I'm fairly well prepared but it covers everything in the entire class (comprehensive), there's no study guide, and is now short answer which is A LOT more difficult than multiple choice.
Eh, I guess you could complain to the higher ups(program chair or whatever). The amount of hassle that would be though would probably be more than writing a short answer exam.
-
they should be a little harder, but that is a little ridiculous. It should at least be the same type of test. They shouldnt make it short answer if all the other students got multiple choice. They could always give you less time to take it in. Then again the teacher is going out of their way to write a new test for you.
Posted by: A Billfish I assume you had the syllabus since the beginning of the semester, correct? You didn't think to look at the class schedule to see if you had any questions? Did he not talk about the final at all during class? Or did you just not go to class?
The class schedule is part of the syllabus. It is what was messed up. He also messed up his office hours in the same way so I guess he just made the syllabus carelessly. Yes I did go to class but he only mentioned it the last day of class before the final and I guess I didn't catch it because by that time I had already had a finals schedule made for myself for a couple weeks.

No, I don't think that's fair. I can understand how it could be used as a way to stop people from skipping class, but it's not always a person's fault if they don't go.

No, it's not fair. You followed the instructions available to you. I'm surprised people are saying you lack common sense, apparently his professor can't differentiate between A.M. and P.M.
-
In theory, you've had extra time to revise compared to the rest of the students in your class. You're also able to ask them what things were on the test, and so can target your revision more aptly. It's already a non-ideal situation from the point of view of comparative marking, not to mention the prof having to write a whole new exam.
Posted by: Oh so Lag Yes, use common sense. A final wouldn't be at 10:30 p.m.
It is Astronomy. Makes sense to have the stars out.
-
No, I already have my maximum grade lowered, why would further punishment be needed?
-
In this situation, there's more of a case for it to be the same difficulty as the test everyone else took. After all, it's his fault for the typo. But, in general, make-up tests are harder because they're given after the normal tests. Which means you have more time to study. Or at least that's what conventional wisdom says, but if you're missing the test because you're busy, you won't have time to study anyway. Okay, I didn't actually read that correctly. 10:30 pm, really? You should have known that was a typo- or at least gotten in touch with him. [Edited on 12.14.2011 8:43 PM PST]

I would say it is okay as long as they properly prepare you for the test.
-
The fact that they're letting you make it up and not fail you gives them the right to do whatever the -blam!- they want lol
-
For a lack of common sense, you should be punished. I would have emailed the teacher over that(as in the time of the exam). OR I would have looked at the exam schedules. Not the syllabus. [Edited on 12.14.2011 8:41 PM PST]
