How do you remove a bounty in Skyrim?

I've heard that once your bounty reaches a certain level guards just attack you on site. I suppose my next suggestion would be yielding to the guards all over town till they eventually offer you a chance at peace. If that fails, I am out of advise.

@Shadow mike, Nah you have a bounty in the hold. If you travel anywhere within the Hold I think ppl would attack you on site.

Even though the guards chased me out of the city, I surprisingly had no bounty afterwards. I'm not really sure why.

Anyway, leave town for as long as possible. Different towns keep records of different bounties. When you return the guards *may (Haven't tried this with large bounties) not recognize you until you talk to them. Then place a basket over each ones head. I'm serious. Try it. If you put a basket over an NPC's head they cannot see.

If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime. Or, you could unlock the speech perk that allows you to bribe your way out of trouble. Edit: If it's 20k, then go for the speech perk. You can just pay a few hundred gold that way. [Edited on 11.15.2011 10:56 PM PST]

You could always pay it off. Or go to jail. Or go to the Thieves' Guild to get someone to remove it for you.

Thieves guild. Place a basket over every single guards head. Technically doesn't remove the bounty but they cannot catch what they cannot see.
