Get a mixed breed dog. Something crossed with lab, they have good temperments. And if you do get a hot dog, mustard and relish is the way to go.
-
Boston Terrier. They are ridiculously lovable.
-
Don't get a St Bernard... too much effort. Get a dog which is easy to control, doesn't make lots of mess (malting etc) and you think is cute. If there is such a dog... I like Dalmations... but have no experience of owning them. Cockaspaniels are good. Hyper when they're young though.

Not to mention they are great guard dogs!
no doubt they are amazing. but they do have physical problems. which makes them that more expensive
My current Shepard and my third, has hip displacia and she is the only one to ever have a problem. I just love them!

I don't know. I got mine from a shelter for a few hundred. A quick google search yield prices from $250 to $2500, I believe we adopted ours for somewhere around $300-$500 from this adoption agency. We have two dogs from here, a Chow/Lab/Shep and a Newfoundland/Chow. Two amazing dogs, nice as can be. EDIT: Oh yeah, they even tell you if the dog is not good w/ kids, other dogs, etc. if it's older. The site has older dogs and puppies. [Edited on 08.24.2011 8:54 PM PDT]

If you are worried about size, get a Newfi-Chow Chow mix. Amazing house dog and guard dog. Medium sized. I live in NJ, where the temperature can go from 10 to 100 degrees Farenhiet through out the year and mine's perfectly fine and as long as you don't live in a cramped house/apartment and have a yard it'll be fine for exercise.
