In the ViDoc, O Brave New worlds, Marcus Lheto mentions that, "We wanted to take the helmets off of all the Spartans." at around 47:00. Unfortunately we never see Emiles face, in fact, we never learn much about Emile beside the fact that he is a guy with a skull on his visor and a big knife.
Is their any canon-related way to explain this, or did Bungie overlook some one who could have been a great character, if he was put in the right missions?

Emile is black. fact. his voice actor is black, his concept art is black, he acts stereotypically black, so therefore he must be black and Emile just sounds like the kind of name a black dude would have. [EDIT] i have nothing against black people, but he could be any race so i didnt say "african-american" which is more politically correct. [Edited on 09.12.2011 2:45 PM PDT]

[EDIT] i have nothing against black people, but he could be any race so i didnt say "african-american" which is more politically correct.
He's from Eridanus, so he's not "African American". He wasn't even born on earth, so he's neither of those. I think that classification is in err, anyway, as very few black people I know were born in Africa, then immigrated to the US.
Posted by: OniLink147 I think it has to do with his back story. He is a very emotionally scarred man. He tries to hide any emotions. Hide any weakness. He constantly wears a mask metaphorically and physically to try to hide the fact that he's human. Some cracks in his mask start to show by the end of the game. With Carter's death you can hear the anger in his voice. And the reason he was killed is because he went into such a blood rage that he stopped paying attention. His final words "I'm ready! how 'bout you!" show a bit of his Human side. Almost everyone interpreted it as a cheesy badass last words type of thing. I saw it more as a man who simply doesn't want to live with all his scars anymore. He and the rest of Noble team are very complex characters if you actually examine them instead of just looking at the outer layer. It's a great story telling device to let you figure things out yourself.
That's why I like Emile so much, if you really pay attention, you can see the emotion behind his actions. That's one of the reasons why I like his character so much, he reminds me of myself. I tend to keep my emotions to myself as well, compartmentalize them, and as such I occasionally react in a similar manner.

I believe that in a VERY discrete way the members of NOBLE team was fleshed out. Mostly in NOBLE actual Emile was sharpening his knife, and in the cave scene when Kat reaches for his knife Emile's hand instantly protects in signifying it is precious to him. Showing he does have the capacity to care for something even if it is his favorite killing tool. And his creativity is shown through by his carving of his helmet. Kat once again in NOBLE actual shows a protective nature when NOBLE six tries to enter the command post she blocks him and with her robotic arm no less signifying that she is not ashamed of her arm and is ready to defend her comrades even with her disability. I would go into the others but this has dragged on long enough.

Blackness....had to be said.
-
Didn't have enough time to model a single character's face? I highly doubt that. There is probably a more in-depth reason like there was for Master Chief, The Rookie, and NOBLE 6.
-
Think about the limited amount of time, people! Maybe, they were desperate and ran out of time. Nothing can be perfected (or perfect).
-
After reading trough this thread I'm convinced that anyone that says the members of NOBLE are bad characters are ignorant or can't read between lines. (Which is what I thought even before reading this thread. But hey, posting in an epic thread.)

The things that look like scratch marks are atcually his face.....and Kat has two arms :/

Rumor has it that if Emile's face was shown, the game would have gotten an AO rating by the ESRB.

They just take the entertainment and not try to empathize. :/
I agree with Prometheus
I tried my damndest to empathize with the Spartans, my god damn hardest, I've been wanting a legitimately emotional story in Halo for years, but I lost interest very quickly. It was a poorly written, poorly directed action movie with the back drop of Pearl Harbor. When Bungie compared it to Titanic, I was like "oh -blam!- man, this'll be intense." Then I heard they were ghoing for a war journalism directional approach, got excited, but witch ultimately was taken to little effect. And comparing Halo: Reach to the Titanic, emotionally, is utter bull -blam!-. [Edited on 09.12.2011 2:27 PM PDT]

Emile is a sad commentary on Reach's story: over the top, emotionally faceless, boring and predictable. What do I mean by emotionally faceless? Well, look at Exodus, when the transport ship was destroyed. That was done with the express purpose of showing the tragedy and loss of human life at Reach. I don't know about you, but all I saw was a big ship go kablooey, I saw no humans die, heard no screams of fear, just saw a cool explosion and a sinking ship. Therefore, any intended impact is lost upon the disconnection from humanity, replaced by a machine Bungie didn't want to take advantage of the M rating (again) and show us some truly gritty war horrors. Again. [Edited on 09.12.2011 2:23 PM PDT]
Posted by: Batman Nades U emile is black. bungie never showed his face due to fear that if they did Halo's credit would of been downgraded to AA+
My initial theory, but then I remembered we had Sgt. Johnson in 4 past games. Now I believe they didn't want to downgrade Johnson's black credibility since he is not on Reach.

This way everyone can imagine Emile differently.
Posted by: Sector Z 157 Emile, I really didn't like him. Does noone else notice that each of Bungie's African characters have an attitude. Sgt. Johnson Romeo Emile Those are the main three.
Every single character has an atitude.

its cause hes John forge, but bungie doesn't want anyone to know.
-
Maybe his face is very scarred (like the Master Chief's I presume). That's why he keeps his face hidden. Maybe among Spartans, unlike Marines, scars are considered a disgrace, a sign that you're not good enough, lacking in skill. Just a theory though.

probabaly because he was adopted.
