NOVA Bombs are capable of destroying a small planet. Why not use it on the Covenant? It may be expensive but it's pretty powerfull.
One Nova Bomb was accidentally detonated between a Covenant oupost planet and it's moon. It scorched half the planet ad shattered it's moon. The planet is now rendered uninhabitable.
Posted by: thebobafettest
Posted by: fxnavarro You're underestimating the power of a NOVA Bomb 1. NOVA Bombs can literally crack a planet in half killing everyone on it. 2. The radiation emitted is large enough to render an entire planet uninhabitable. 3. There are only a handful in existence 4. The UNSC thought about using them on Reach but decided it would be better if the Covenant captured one, brought it home to study, KA-BOOM. 5. Its incredibly difficult to plan that. The bomb would kill anyone in proximity meaning it must be quickly transported and then the transport must flee, but most ships are too easy of targets and will probably be cut down if they're the only ones fighting but if they had support then the NOVA Bomb would kill them all. Basically the only practical way of using one is by letting the Covenant capture one or by sacrificing a large amount of your own troops.
#4) Incorrect, what the UNSC did was leave the NOVA wherever, and if the Covenant picked it up, great, if not then it would impede the Covenant's progress on Reach. Either way it was a Win-Win.
The Covenant jumped directly into Epsilon Eridani just out of range of the SMACs. The only way to "impede" their advance is to detonate somewhere inbetween the Covenant Fleet and Reach. No matter where they chose, it would fry at least half of Reach along with the UNSC Fleet, the SMACs and all forces on that side of the planet would need to be sacrificed. If thats the case, it wouldn't "impede" anything but would simply sacrifice their forces in order to destroy the Covenant fleet.

I'm getting he may have been refering to the one NOVA in pural, aka them taking the bombs where the NOVA was located and not there is another NOVA at Earth. Regardless, I never got the feeling there was another NOVA bomb made.

They'd have to first look for deposits, find them, transport equipment to get it out, transport it back, etc. All very difficult to do on the best of days, but at the time it probably would be better to use those resources on other endeavors.
Posted by: Cmdr DaeFaron
"either the Covenant pack those bombs up and take them home for study, a possibility that I hope to God happens.
His comment on the nova bomb...
"bombs" and "them". I don't understand what you are getting at here to be honest.
Posted by: Cmdr DaeFaron And in the recording(on the NOVA) he goes "This is the prototype NOVA Bomb."
If, in the event you are unlucky enough to come face to face with an active NOVA, it would not make much sense to refer it in the plural sense. "These are the prototype NOVA bombs..." "Where? I only see one." I guess it sort of fits, both are applicable I think.
Posted by: grey101 I don't understand why people assume prototypes only have 1 model or 1 product, how many types of Mjolnir do we have?
Well, MJOLNIR is a good bit different from the Nova bomb... Even then, they can't be called all prototypes. I view there only being one because the way it sounded/was referenced in first strike, that one was the only one. Then the fact I don't see humanity having the resources/time to build another...

The canon reason likely being no one would dare get too close to drop it.
Cortana might of requested it, but did she know whether or not there was another? The NOVA bomb on Reach was the prototype, when would they have time to build another?
Well, she should. Besides, what proof do you have that says there wasn't another one built? As far as we know, she knew of another that existed; doesn't mean there was a third though.
Posted by: Adragalus
Posted by: Sigma617
Posted by: Poy Poy The only reason why the NOVA bomb was so powerful was because it was exploded inside the covenant ship. The energy shielding keeping the explosion in, maginifying the power. Detonating a nuke outside would have little to no effect on most covenant ships, and I doubt the covenant has any controlled planets around the Colonies that is worth using a NOVA bomb on.
No. The NOVA is a planet cracker. it's gonna destroy ANYTHING within a thousand miles of ground zero. No exceptions.
Seconded. The shields only increase the power of an internal detonation in regards to the ship its exploding inside. The NOVA vaporized the ship it was in, and went on to, as stated, shatter a moon and scorch half of Joyous Exultation.
Poy, they are correct. Nova is basically planet cracker, it has nine nuclear warheads fused together, it can go mini-nova when it increases the yield by hundred. Basically, it can destroy entire fleets, shatter moons and scorch the planet if it was detonated in correct place. You claimed that NOVA would have no effect on ships, which it is completely false. Yield only slightly increases as it detonated INSIDE of the ship, ONLY SLIGHTLY. And it was estimated about to be 1.2 peratons of TNT. Now, you see, most of covenant ships (frigates, destroyers, light cruisers and battle cruisers) cannot survive against mid level megatons of TNT firepower, however while super-cruiser, super battle-ship, assault carrier and super carrier can sustain against high level megatons to low level gigatons due to shielding strength increases as size gets bigger. So NOVA is plentiful enough to destroy entire fleets without any problems. And, At end of the war, UNSC was running out high yield thermonuclear warheads and had few NOVA left, I think because Cortana requested for NOVA bomb at Delta Halo but it never got progressed.
-
The NOVA was just a prototype by the time Reach was invaded. The UNSC was lucky they even had some working NOVA´s at the time.

If the UNSC had used a Nova Bomb during Halo 2, Halo 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 would have never came about. Which is kinda lame. [Edited on 07.28.2011 11:10 AM PDT]

Because there was only one Nova bomb built.
Posted by: ROBERTO jh We almost did use a NOVA at Delta Halo (which probably would have destroyed all our enemies at once, when you think about it) but it never panned out.
Because it would have ruined Halo 3 :0

I'm pretty sure that by the end of the war, we only had one or two prototype NOVAs.

This is a clear sign like it was said above me that the UNSC were running low on uranium and simply couldn't keep up with the supply and demand of nuclear weapons. They couldn't simply just go making them, they were fighting a war and losing. You should know that their economy would be shattered by the loss of entires worlds and loss of many ships and soldiers for almost 30 years.
Or they didn't want rebels to have nukes.
Right!
