Shadow's guide to (Internet) Myths! Farewell Flood!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE!!! The myth thread is now complete. I have finished what I set out to do and am now moving on. To read the final myth and a farewell please click here. Thanks for the many memories and I wish you all the best in your lives. - Love Shadow

I have always been extremely interested in Myths, Legends and Hoaxes occurring in real life and the Internet. This thread is here as a "library" of the major internet Legends and Myths. Please, if I'm missing any, reply with some information on the subject and I will add it to the OP along with your name. If you see any mistakes, please inform me! Also, the reason I have Internet in brackets in the OP is because this thread will FOCUS on Internet myths but not be restricted to them. Basically, any myth (real life or internet) is allowed. Also, if this gets popular I MAY need a second OP. But we'll see. Anyway, let's get into it.

Subject: #001: The Slender Man Alright, I've picked one of the most well-known celebrities on the Flood as our first subject. The Slender Man! Oh and what a subject he is. About the Slenderman: Slenderman (also known as "Slendy" or "TheSlenderMan") is a mythical creature that appeared on the internet about 2009. He was conjured up at the SomethingAwful.com forums by a member named Victor Surge for a Photoshop competition. He is depicted to be tall and thin (hence the Slender), wearing a black suit and having an emotionless, blank face. Victor entered the competition on June 10th, 2009 (the day the world was introduced to Slendy). He (Victor) had stated that Slenderman was a creature who stalked little children. Slenderman didn't really rise to fame until the 24th of June (2009) when the infamous 4Chan caught its scent and it's paranormal (/x/) board took a massive liking to Slendy. Still, even with 4chan knowing about Slendy you wouldn't really call him a massive internet star just yet. But, then came the MarbleHornets Project. On June 20th (before Slendy came to 4chan)a mysterious video aired on youtube. This video was called theMarble Hornets entries. "MarbleHornets" started hosting videos called "entries" which claimed to be taped segments retrieved by someone named "Jay" (or also "J"), and contained footage of a friend that had since disappeared. Then the /x/ board found the videos and they got incredibly famous and so did Slendy. He has become, what I call, an "Internet Sensation". He has been featured on many sites (including this one; see Top Forum Topic by Lt Sartor). After the videos got famous random people started posting their experiences with Slendy. A lot of pictures started showing up and basically, the internet both loved and feared the infamous SlenderMan. It has later become clear that the videos are fake and it was created by two film students (who were also SomethingAwful users) as part of an ARG. But users still watch the entries regardless, possibly hoping that this mythological beast is real. Slender Man Gallery: Here is Slenderman having some fun with the local kids. Here he is with some more victims... errm... kids... And here is some amazing artwork of Slendy. Shadow's Verdict: Real or fake, I think it is safe to say most of the internet (at least the forum side of the internet) knows Slendy by now. And 90% of us love and are fascinated by him. Regardless of the fact that he creeps most us out. But, I'm going to call FAKE on this one. Simply because of the fact that before the SomethingAwful competition there was absolutely no trace of Slendy anywhere. No experiences, no pictures. It is just all too made up. All the pictures I have seen are either extremely photoshopped or Artwork. So, my final verdict for the infamous SlenderMan is FAKE. Now that I have said that I am most likely going to get Slenderly love in the middle of the night from a tall suited man, but oh well. That's the price of the internet. Regardless, Slenderman has captivated and fascinated my imagination for a year now and it has been a lot of fun researching into the myth. Also, this thread needs credit for opening Bungie.net's mind to Slendy! Subject #001 Complete.

Subject #002: Lavender Town Lavender Town is only really known to the most dedicated Pokemon or game forums. I wouldn't call it famous but it definitely has a reputation around these parts. So, shall we get into it straight away? I think so. About Lavender Town: So, you may be wondering what Lavender Town is. Well, Lavender Town is essentially a little town in Pokemon Red and Green that was said to cause mass suicides in Teenagers ages 7 - 12. The actual town it self is quite normal. Just an average town in the world of Pokemon. What is different, however, is the town's purpose. It serves as the Kanto's (the world in Red and Green, I think? Correct me if I'm wrong! I know Hoenn is Ruby and Sapphire!) pokemon graveyard. It features it's own special Tower (filled with graves) and an eerie song. The Lavender Town Syndrome (also known as "Lavender Town Tone" or "Lavender Town Suicides" and "Lavender Town Conspiracy") made itself famous shortly after the games release (1996) because it was said to cause mass suicides or illness of children aged from 7 - 12 years old. The reason of this was said to be listening to the original Lavender Town theme (check the subject's gallery for videos and pictures!) One video, which showed on Youtube on July 26th, 2010, appeared to have software that would actually analyse the LT theme and convert them into images. Pictures at the end of the song seemed to resemble the pokemon Unown. What is so strange about this is the fact that Unown didn't appear in generation one pokemon (Red and Green) and actually made it's appearance in Generation Two. Another strange thing that appears to be in Lavender Town is a couple of extra things. A "White Hand" sprite. A "Ghost Animation". And a model named the "Buried Alive Model". There is no known pictures of the BA Model but it has appeared in several copy-pasta's of the LTS. The White Hand Sprite: Known as WhiteHand.gif, this was meant to appear as a pokemon on the third level of the Lavender Tower. It has four different animation; Introduction, Idle and two attacks. The attacks are known as "Fist" and "Brutal". Fist is basically just a punch. But the Brutal animation is missing several frames, apparently. It has been said to "Open up" and then it just cut's out. After that it appear's closed up again. There has been no record of the missing frames as of the time of this writing. The White Hand is depicted as a decaying, shriveled up White hand. The Ghost Animation: Coded as Haunting.swf, the ghost animation was coded to appear in several places in the tower. Many people believe it is just a background feature as you can not interact with it. It has 59 frames in total. Half of these frames appear to be the normal Pokemon Ghost model. About a quarter of these frames appear to be static to create a fading out effect. The rest, strangely, appear to be screaming faces, a "Grim Reaper" style thing and corpses. Programmer Hisashi Sogabe has said that he has "No knowledge as to where the images surfaced". Not much else is known about TGA. The Buried Alive Model: Known as the Buryman script, the BA model was to be the boss on top of the Lavender Town Tower. He was replaced by the ghost of a Marowak. Once arriving on top of the tower, the player would have this conversation with the Buryman: Buried Alive: You're... Here. BA: I'm trapped... BA: And I'm lonely... BA: So very lonely... BA: Won't you join me? After this, a battle would be initiated. Once in "BattleMode" the model would appear to be a decaying human corpse trying to crawl out of the ground. It was programmed to have two White Hands, a Gengar and a Muk. No script was written if you defeated the BA Model. The game-boy would just... freeze. Although, if you lost against the Buried Alive model then he would say something along the lines of "Finally, Fresh meat" followed by several lines of gibberish. He then dragged the character into the ground with him. Then "Game Over" would be displayed. But in the background the BA Model would be devouring the character. Apparently though, the file downloaded itself into the actual gameboy. So that when you turned on your GB you would view the Game Over image and the sound file staticmesh.wav was played. But anyway, Lavender Town is filled with creepyness. You may not realize it as you play through again soon but Lavender Town may have actually been the cause of many child suicides in 1996. Kinda makes you feel sick, doesn't it? Apparently though, the reason for the suicides were the theme song and that song alone. It is said that kids and young teenagers can actually hear different sounds in the music.

If anyone has any suggestions for Myths I could do/research I would be happy to do just that! Just reply with the name of the myth or legend and I'll get straight on it. - Shadow [Edited on 04.08.2012 12:46 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: DeformedFish
Posted by: Tomvl117 Can someone briefly explain the subjects Squidward Suicide, Dead Bart, Suicide mouse and/or Majora's Mask (BEN Drowned)? Opened a tab on Majora's Mask and I immediately saw a big black-and-white picture of a mask with blood or something coming out of its mouthpiece and I kind of closed it after 0.1 sec because I was too scared by it -_-' EDIT: Thread saved.
Well, The Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask was a game that I enjoyed alot when I was younger. You went on a kind of quest killing monsters and collecting masks that transformed you into different creatures. What made this game so awesome for me was how different and creepy it was for me. Because in the game you only had three days to save the world before the moon crashed into the earth, destroying it and everyone on it. I'm not really sure what BEN drowned means...
wasnt that a stage in super smash bros melee?

 • Continued from Subject #005: Squidward's Suicide The happy-go-lucky music plays as is normal. The story began with Squidard practicing his clarinet, hitting a few sour notes like normal. We hear Spongebob laughing outside and Squidard stops, yelling at him to keep it down as he has a concert that night and needs to practice. Spongebob says okay and goes to see Sandy with with Patrick. The bubbles splash screen comes up and we see the ending of Squidward's concert. This is when things began to seem off. While playing, a few frames repeat themselves, but the sound doesn't (at this point sound is synced up with animation so yes that's not common) but when he stops playing, the sound finishes as if the skip never happened. There is slight murmuring in the crowd before they begin to boo him. Not normal cartoon booing that is common in the show, but you could very clearly hear malice in it. Squidward's in full frame and looks visibly afraid. The shot goes to the crowd, with Spongebob in center frame, and he too is booing, very much unlike him. That isn't the oddest thing, though. What is odd is everyone had hyper realistic eyes. Very detailed. Clearly not shots of real people's eyes, but something a bit more real than CGI. The pupils were red. Some of us looked at eachother, obviously confused, but since we weren't the writers we didn't question its appeal to children, yet. The shot goes to Squidward sitting on the edge of his bed, looking very forlorn. The view out of his porthole window is of a night sky so it isn't very long after the concert. The unsettling part is at this point there is no sound. Literally no sound. Not even the feedback from the speakers in the room. It's as if the speakers were turned off, though their status showed them working perfectly. He just sat there, blinking, in this silence for about 30 seconds, then he started to sob softly. He put his hands (tentacles) over his eyes and cried quietly for a full minute more, all the while a sound in the background very slowly growing from nothing to barely audible. It sounded like a slight breeze through a forest. The screen slowly begins to zoom in on his face. By slow I mean it's only noticeable if you look at shots 10 seconds apart side by side. His sobbing gets louder, more full of hurt and anger. The screen then twitches a bit, as if it twists in on itself, for a split second then back to normal. The wind-through-the-trees sound gets slowly louder and more severe, as if a storm is brewing somewhere. The eerie part is this sound, and Squidward's sobbing, sounded real, as if the sound wasn't coming from the speakers but as if the speakers were holes the sound was coming through from the other side. As good as sound as the studio likes to have, they don't purchase the equipment to be that good to produce sound of that quality. Below the sound of the wind and sobbing, very faint, something sounded like laughing. It came at odd intervals and never lasted more than a second so you had a hard time pinning it (we watched this show twice, so pardon me if things sound too specific but I've had time to think about them). After 30 seconds of this, the screen blurred and twitched violently and something flashed over the screen, as if a single frame was replaced. The lead animation editor paused and rewound frame by frame. What we saw was horrible. It was a still photo of a dead child. He couldn't have been more than 6. The face was mangled and bloodied, one eye dangling over his upturned face, popped. He was naked down to his underwear, his stomach crudely cut open and his entrails laying beside him. He was laying on some pavement that was probably a road. The most upsetting part was that there was a shadow of the photographer. There was no crime tape, no evidence tags or markers, and the angle was completely off for a shot designed to be evidence. It would seem the photographer was the person responsible for the child's death. We were of course mortified, but pressed on, hoping that it was just a sick joke. The screen flipped back to Squidward, still sobbing, louder than before, and half body in frame. There was now what appeard to be blood running down his face from his eyes. The blood was also done in a hyper realistic style, looking as if you touched it you'd get blood on your fingers. The wind sounded now as if it were that of a gale blowing through the forest; there were even snapping sounds of branches. The laughing, a deep baritone, lasting at longer intervals and coming more frequently. After about 20 seconds, the screen again twisted and showed a single frame photo. The editor was reluctant to go back, we all were, but he knew he had to. This time the photo was that of what appeared to be a little girl, no older than the first child. She was laying on her stomach, her barrettes in a pool of blood next to her. Her left eye was too popped out and popped, naked except for underpants. Her entrails were piled on top of her above another crude cut along her back. Again the body was on the street and the photographer's shadow was visible, very similar in size and shape to the first. I had to choke back vomit and one intern, the only female in the room, ran out. The show resumed. About 5 seconds after this second photo played, Squidward went silent, as did all sound, like it was when this scene started. He put his tentacles down and his eyes were now done in hyper realism like the others were in the beginning of this episode. They were bleeding, bloodshot, and pulsating. He just stared at the screen, as if watching the viewer. After about 10 seconds, he started sobbing, this time not covering his eyes. The sound was piercing and loud, and most fear inducing of all is his sobbing was mixed with screams. Tears and blood were dripping down his face at a heavy rate. The wind sound came back, and so did the deep voiced laughing, and this time the still photo lasted for a good 5 frames. The animator was able to stop it on the 4th and backed up. This time the photo was of a boy, about the same age, but this time the scene was different. The entrails were just being pulled out from a stomach wound by a large hand, the right eye popped and dangling, blood trickling down it. The animator proceeded. It was hard to believe, but the next one was different but we couldn't tell what. He went on to the next, same thing. He want back to the first and played them quicker and I lost it. I vomited on the floor, the animating and sound editors gasping at the screen. The 5 frames were not as if they were 5 different photos, they were played out as if they were frames from a video. We saw the hand slowly lift out the guts, we saw the kid's eyes focus on it, we even saw two frames of the kid beginning to blink. The lead sound editor told us to stop, he had to call in the creator to see this. Mr. Hillenburg arrived within about 15 minutes. He was confused as to why he was called down there, so the editor just continued the episode. Once the few frames were shown, all screaming, all sound again stopped. Squidward was just staring at the viewer, full frame of the face, for about 3 seconds. The shot quickly panned out and that deep voice said "DO IT" and we see in Squidward's hands a shotgun. He immediately puts the gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger. Realistic blood and brain matter splatters the wall behind him, and his bed, and he flies back with the force. The last 5 seconds of this episode show his body on the bed, on his side, one eye dangling on what's left of his head above the floor, staring blankly at it. Then the episode ends. Mr Hillenburg is obviously angry at this. He demanded to know what the heck was going on. Most people left the room at this point, so it was just a handful of us to watch it again. Viewing the episode twice only served to imprint the entirety of it in my mind and cause me horrible nightmares. I'm sorry I stayed. The only theory we could think of was the file was edited by someone in the chain from the drawing studio to here. The CTO was called in to analyze when it happened. The analysis of the file did show it was edited over by new material. However, the timestamp of it was a mere 24 seconds before we began viewing it. All equipment involved was examined for foreign software and hardware as well as glitches, as if the time stamp may have glitched and showed the wrong time, but everything checked out fine. We don't know what happened and to this day nobody does. There was an investigation due to the nature of the photos, but nothing came of it. No child seen was identified and no clues were gathered from the data involved nor physical clues in the photos. I never believed in unexplainable phenomena before, but now that I have something happen and can't prove anything about it beyond anecdotal evidence, I think twice about things. End of Copy-Pasta! Alright, that was certainly interesting. But that's all I have sadly. (This took an amazing entire post and a half!) Squidward's Gallery (He sucks at art, I heard): Squidward's Suicide Tape Squidward's Suicide Picture! Shadow's Verdict: Well, I'm calling FAKE. I have to keep this short and sweet as the post is almost up. But basically, the story seems very fake to me. Someone could of definitely done drawn and animated both of those. And lastly, the lack of proof is insufficient. As per usual I am closing the subject but if more evidence surfaces I shall definitely re-look into the fascinating the curious case of the suicidal squid. - Shadow [Edited on 07.17.2011 2:13 AM PDT]

 • SP Post #3: Welcome to the third SP post. There will be a reserved place under-neath this post for SP Post #4. This is because I wish for each SP to have another SP underneath it. SP = Subject Post. Think OP (Original Post) meeting the threads subjects. Basically, it's the post where all the subjects are going. Anyways, enjoy one again!

Subject #004: Obey the Walrus Obey the Walrus (also known as Goddess Bunny or Obedece a la Morsa) is basically a video on youtube that has become famous over the years (starting in 2005). About Obey the Walrus: The person in the video's name is Johnny Baima (or Sandy Crisp) and he/she is a -blam!- transvestite that endured polio and child abuse during his childhood. There is a site known as GoddessBunny.com that tells the story of Johnny quite well. Here is the copy-pasta from that site (NOT MY WRITING): Stricken by polio as a child, it appears that Johnnie bounced from foster home to foster home where he experienced some kind of abuse. Of course you probably figured that he was abused as a child in some way because no well-adjusted child would grow up to do that tap-dancing routine in lingerie while twirling a parasol, right? Additionally, his posture and growth was restricted due to an ill-fated attempt by doctors to strengthen his spine with a steel rod. Johnnie, as Sandie Crisp, wants to be a famous. Some may say that he has already achieved his goal judging from his huge following in the -blam!- and transgender community. I've heard that he does lip-synching routines and some sort of stage show in various parts of California (not just Hollywood). He has also attained some notoriety in mainstream culture by appearing in Marilyn Manson's Dope Show video and I believe that there is additional footage of Johnny in Marilyn Manson's DVD. It's in the behind-the-scenes footage of the Dope Show video where Johnnie can be seen frolicking and kissing various band members inside a limosine. Besides this music video, Johnnie also appeared in a presumably horrible Carrie Fisher movie called Hollywood Vice Squad. Now, you may be wondering; "Oh that doesn't sound scary!" or "There is no way he should he be famous on the interwebs just because he is -blam!-!". Well (check the gallery) what made him famous on the internet is the video that was posted in 2005 on ebaumsworld.com. It was titled Goddess Bunny The Tap Dancer. Since there was pretty much no information at the time of the video it created a lot of confusion. And that of course, lead to internet fame. And then started the remakes. Different sounds, songs in the background, edits, remixes. Pretty much there was a lot of new videos surfacing that were basically just edits of the original. But then in October a youtube user named "Obeythewalrus" posted a video on youtube named Obedece a La Morsa. It shows the main antagonist from Starfox singing a spanish version of "Itsy Bitsy Spider" with strange effects. Then the video showed the same video of Goddess Bunny but with a couple of extra editions. The account (ObeyTheWalrus) then disappeared of Youtube and never seen or heard of again. But Obedece La Morsa lived on in other channels. Then the remakes or tributes of THAT video started occuring. Videos with explanations of what Obedece La Morsa meant, what the video was about and tributes to the user appeared. Some videos theorized that the meanings of the words had to do with a satanic and transvestite (which is presumably called Walrus). They apparently had inserted subliminal messages into the video, which of course, sparked more controversy. And then that's it. Nothing else has surfaced on the video, user or the satanic group known as The Walrus. Regardless, there have been many tributes and edits to this day of Goddess Bunny and Obedece the Walrus. But many people on the internet have yet to see the original footage (which may for some reason disturb some people). Walrus Gallery: Goddess Bunny *Original* Re-Uploaded Obedece a La Morsa video Beware, those two videos are actually pretty creepy! Shadow's Verdict: Well, firstly. That creeped me out. The videos. Not really the story, but the videos did. I don't know why, it just did. But, I'm calling TRUE on this one. I mean the video proof is there and the background story actually checks out. It doesn't look very fake to me. The only fake bit that struck me off is the subliminal messaging of the Walrus cult. I believe that is FAKE, but the actual Goddess Bunny (Johnny/Sandy) is actually a transvestite. So, this is a kind of two answered thing. Some of the story is fake but most of it is actually true. So, yeah. Fake and true is my final answer. Unless more information comes out. SUBJECT #004 Closed!

SUBJECT #005: Squidward's Suicide Squidward's Suicide is a very interesting subject but alas not much is known about it. So, I'm going to attempt to display everything I can about this as it is very weird. What is Squidward's Suicide? Squidward's suicide is basically creepy-pasta. The myth started only two years ago (2009) but is already famous among popular gaming forums. It was started when an odd video was posted to youtube titled; "Squidward's Suicide". What the users account said was rumored to be actually true. The only so called proof of the episode is a written "creepypasta" and a photo of Squidward with blood-shot realistic eyes. There are a couple of other images but there authentication is yet to be confirmed. Anyway, here is the creepy-pasta story: (not written by me) I just want to start off by saying if you want an answer at the end, prepare to be disappointed. There just isn't one. I was an intern at Nickelodeon Studios for a year in 2005 for my degree in animation. It wasn't paid of course, most internships aren't, but it did have some perks beyond education. To adults it might not seem like a big one, but most kids at the time would go crazy over it. Now, since I worked directly with the editors and animators, I got to view the new episodes days before they aired. I'll get right to it without giving too many unnecessary details. They had very recently made the Spongebob movie and the entire staff was somewhat sapped of creativity so it took them longer to start up the season. But the delay lasted longer for more upsetting reasons. There was a problem with the series 4 premier that set everyone and everything back for several months. Me and two other interns were in the editing room along with the lead animators and sound editors for the final cut. We received the copy that was supposed to be "Fear of a Krabby Patty" and gathered around the screen to watch. Now, given that it isn't final yet animators often put up a mock title card, sort of an inside joke for us, with phony, often times lewd titles, such as "How sex doesn't work" instead of "Rock-a-by-Bivalve" when Spongebob and Patrick adopt a sea scallop. Nothing particularly funny but work related chuckles. So when we saw the title card "Squidward's Suicide" we didn't think it more than a morbid joke.

Stick around, I have another subject being released today as well! Two in one, you may say! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my subject on Obey The Walrus. Check the original SP for information on the subject schedule! :) - Shadow [Edited on 07.17.2011 2:06 AM PDT]

 • OP, look into the interview with one of the guys who made the Lavender Town if you haven't already. It definitely gave a lot more depth to the myth. I actually think I believe it now. But very good thread, I will definitely check it out if I have a chance.
