Shadow's guide to (Internet) Myths! Farewell Flood!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE!!! The myth thread is now complete. I have finished what I set out to do and am now moving on. To read the final myth and a farewell please click here. Thanks for the many memories and I wish you all the best in your lives. - Love Shadow

I have always been extremely interested in Myths, Legends and Hoaxes occurring in real life and the Internet. This thread is here as a "library" of the major internet Legends and Myths. Please, if I'm missing any, reply with some information on the subject and I will add it to the OP along with your name. If you see any mistakes, please inform me! Also, the reason I have Internet in brackets in the OP is because this thread will FOCUS on Internet myths but not be restricted to them. Basically, any myth (real life or internet) is allowed. Also, if this gets popular I MAY need a second OP. But we'll see. Anyway, let's get into it.

Subject: #001: The Slender Man Alright, I've picked one of the most well-known celebrities on the Flood as our first subject. The Slender Man! Oh and what a subject he is. About the Slenderman: Slenderman (also known as "Slendy" or "TheSlenderMan") is a mythical creature that appeared on the internet about 2009. He was conjured up at the SomethingAwful.com forums by a member named Victor Surge for a Photoshop competition. He is depicted to be tall and thin (hence the Slender), wearing a black suit and having an emotionless, blank face. Victor entered the competition on June 10th, 2009 (the day the world was introduced to Slendy). He (Victor) had stated that Slenderman was a creature who stalked little children. Slenderman didn't really rise to fame until the 24th of June (2009) when the infamous 4Chan caught its scent and it's paranormal (/x/) board took a massive liking to Slendy. Still, even with 4chan knowing about Slendy you wouldn't really call him a massive internet star just yet. But, then came the MarbleHornets Project. On June 20th (before Slendy came to 4chan)a mysterious video aired on youtube. This video was called theMarble Hornets entries. "MarbleHornets" started hosting videos called "entries" which claimed to be taped segments retrieved by someone named "Jay" (or also "J"), and contained footage of a friend that had since disappeared. Then the /x/ board found the videos and they got incredibly famous and so did Slendy. He has become, what I call, an "Internet Sensation". He has been featured on many sites (including this one; see Top Forum Topic by Lt Sartor). After the videos got famous random people started posting their experiences with Slendy. A lot of pictures started showing up and basically, the internet both loved and feared the infamous SlenderMan. It has later become clear that the videos are fake and it was created by two film students (who were also SomethingAwful users) as part of an ARG. But users still watch the entries regardless, possibly hoping that this mythological beast is real. Slender Man Gallery: Here is Slenderman having some fun with the local kids. Here he is with some more victims... errm... kids... And here is some amazing artwork of Slendy. Shadow's Verdict: Real or fake, I think it is safe to say most of the internet (at least the forum side of the internet) knows Slendy by now. And 90% of us love and are fascinated by him. Regardless of the fact that he creeps most us out. But, I'm going to call FAKE on this one. Simply because of the fact that before the SomethingAwful competition there was absolutely no trace of Slendy anywhere. No experiences, no pictures. It is just all too made up. All the pictures I have seen are either extremely photoshopped or Artwork. So, my final verdict for the infamous SlenderMan is FAKE. Now that I have said that I am most likely going to get Slenderly love in the middle of the night from a tall suited man, but oh well. That's the price of the internet. Regardless, Slenderman has captivated and fascinated my imagination for a year now and it has been a lot of fun researching into the myth. Also, this thread needs credit for opening Bungie.net's mind to Slendy! Subject #001 Complete.

Subject #002: Lavender Town Lavender Town is only really known to the most dedicated Pokemon or game forums. I wouldn't call it famous but it definitely has a reputation around these parts. So, shall we get into it straight away? I think so. About Lavender Town: So, you may be wondering what Lavender Town is. Well, Lavender Town is essentially a little town in Pokemon Red and Green that was said to cause mass suicides in Teenagers ages 7 - 12. The actual town it self is quite normal. Just an average town in the world of Pokemon. What is different, however, is the town's purpose. It serves as the Kanto's (the world in Red and Green, I think? Correct me if I'm wrong! I know Hoenn is Ruby and Sapphire!) pokemon graveyard. It features it's own special Tower (filled with graves) and an eerie song. The Lavender Town Syndrome (also known as "Lavender Town Tone" or "Lavender Town Suicides" and "Lavender Town Conspiracy") made itself famous shortly after the games release (1996) because it was said to cause mass suicides or illness of children aged from 7 - 12 years old. The reason of this was said to be listening to the original Lavender Town theme (check the subject's gallery for videos and pictures!) One video, which showed on Youtube on July 26th, 2010, appeared to have software that would actually analyse the LT theme and convert them into images. Pictures at the end of the song seemed to resemble the pokemon Unown. What is so strange about this is the fact that Unown didn't appear in generation one pokemon (Red and Green) and actually made it's appearance in Generation Two. Another strange thing that appears to be in Lavender Town is a couple of extra things. A "White Hand" sprite. A "Ghost Animation". And a model named the "Buried Alive Model". There is no known pictures of the BA Model but it has appeared in several copy-pasta's of the LTS. The White Hand Sprite: Known as WhiteHand.gif, this was meant to appear as a pokemon on the third level of the Lavender Tower. It has four different animation; Introduction, Idle and two attacks. The attacks are known as "Fist" and "Brutal". Fist is basically just a punch. But the Brutal animation is missing several frames, apparently. It has been said to "Open up" and then it just cut's out. After that it appear's closed up again. There has been no record of the missing frames as of the time of this writing. The White Hand is depicted as a decaying, shriveled up White hand. The Ghost Animation: Coded as Haunting.swf, the ghost animation was coded to appear in several places in the tower. Many people believe it is just a background feature as you can not interact with it. It has 59 frames in total. Half of these frames appear to be the normal Pokemon Ghost model. About a quarter of these frames appear to be static to create a fading out effect. The rest, strangely, appear to be screaming faces, a "Grim Reaper" style thing and corpses. Programmer Hisashi Sogabe has said that he has "No knowledge as to where the images surfaced". Not much else is known about TGA. The Buried Alive Model: Known as the Buryman script, the BA model was to be the boss on top of the Lavender Town Tower. He was replaced by the ghost of a Marowak. Once arriving on top of the tower, the player would have this conversation with the Buryman: Buried Alive: You're... Here. BA: I'm trapped... BA: And I'm lonely... BA: So very lonely... BA: Won't you join me? After this, a battle would be initiated. Once in "BattleMode" the model would appear to be a decaying human corpse trying to crawl out of the ground. It was programmed to have two White Hands, a Gengar and a Muk. No script was written if you defeated the BA Model. The game-boy would just... freeze. Although, if you lost against the Buried Alive model then he would say something along the lines of "Finally, Fresh meat" followed by several lines of gibberish. He then dragged the character into the ground with him. Then "Game Over" would be displayed. But in the background the BA Model would be devouring the character. Apparently though, the file downloaded itself into the actual gameboy. So that when you turned on your GB you would view the Game Over image and the sound file staticmesh.wav was played. But anyway, Lavender Town is filled with creepyness. You may not realize it as you play through again soon but Lavender Town may have actually been the cause of many child suicides in 1996. Kinda makes you feel sick, doesn't it? Apparently though, the reason for the suicides were the theme song and that song alone. It is said that kids and young teenagers can actually hear different sounds in the music.

If anyone has any suggestions for Myths I could do/research I would be happy to do just that! Just reply with the name of the myth or legend and I'll get straight on it. - Shadow [Edited on 04.08.2012 12:46 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: ShadowLegacy Subject Post #8 Subject #008: Suicide Mouse Well, this is one of the strangest things my eyes have EVER seen. And that's no joke. This video kind of goes along the same road as Squidward's Suicide and Dead Bart except for the fact that it is actually a childhood classic; Mickey Mouse. By same road, I mean a video and creepypasta that ruins memories of once loved childhood heroes. Anyway, let's go! What is Suicide Mouse? Before I show you the pasta, I am going to quickly (briefly) explain what is going on (to see the video, check the Gallery). Suicide Mouse was most likely introduced on a well known image board (that I have spoken about a lot in this thread) known as 4chan. I, personally, believe it is a hoax (see Shadow's Verdict for full impressions) but for this many people to "jump on the bandwagon" from just a simple fake video and well thought out Pasta it must be relatively creepy and... realistic? Anyway, I don't know when it was released to the web but I think it would've been around 2006. I don't exactly know when so feel free to correct me if you can. But I do believe it appeared first on the /x/ board of 4chan. Anyway, onto the video. Basically, it starts out like the 30's Mickey Mouse art style. Mickey is just walking along the sidewalk, staring at the ground. It is obviously looped. Then after a bit of black screen, he re-appears on the same route. But something is wrong. Oh, so very wrong. His face starts to distort, the background starts to warp and a picture of a girl getting killed is shown in the background. I will admit, I got a tad bit creeped out by this. But even more interested. I couldn't press stop and turn away. This magical creepy-pasta of Mickey becoming distorted compelled me to stay there watching. And then I re-watched it. Again. And Again. And possibly a fifth time. Call me weird if you want but this is genuinely interesting and bizarre to me. Anyway, the story in a nutshell is Walt Disney went crazy and decided to draw this bizarre piece of randomness. Here is the original Creepy-Pasta; START OF CREEPY-PASTA! So do any of you remember those Mickey Mouse cartoons from the 1930s? The ones that were just put out on DVDa few years ago? Well, I hear there is one that was unreleased to even the most avid classic disney fans. According to sources, it's nothing special. It's just a continuous loop (like flinstones) of mickey walking past 6 buildings that goes on for two or three minutes before fading out. Unlike the cutesy tunes put in though, the song on this cartoon was not a song at all, just a constant banging on a piano as if the keys for a minute and a half before going to white noise for the remainder of the film. It wasn't the jolly old Mickey we've come to love either, Mickey wasn't dancing, not even smiling, just kind of walking as if you or I were walking, with a normal facial expression, but for some reason his head tilted side to side as he kept this dismal look. Up until a year or two ago, everyone believed that after it cut to black and that was it. When Leonard Maltin was reviewing the cartoon to be put in the complete series, he decided it was too junk to be on the DVD, but wanted to have a digital copy due to the fact that it was a creation of Walt. When he had a digitized version up on his computer to look at the file, he noticed something. The cartoon was actually 9 minutes and 4 seconds long. This is what my source emailed to me, in full (he is a personal assistant of one of the higher executives at Disney, and acquaintance of Mr. Maltin himself) "After it cut to black, it stayed like that until the 6th minute, before going back into Mickey walking. The sound was different this time. It was a murmur. It wasn't a language, but more like a gurgled cry. As the noise got more indistinguishable and loud over the next minute, the picture began to get weird. The sidewalk started to go in directions that seemed impossible based on the physics of Mickeys walking. And the dismal face of the mouse was slowly curling into a smirk. On the 7th minute, the murmur turned into a bloodcurdling scream (the kind of scream painful to hear) and the picture was getting more obscure. Colors were happening that shouldn't have been possible at the time. Mickey face began to fall apart. his eyes rolled on the bottom of his chin like two marbles in a fishbowl, and his curled smile was pointing upward on the left side of his face. The buildings became rubble floating in midair and the sidewalk was still impossibly navigating in warped directions, a few seeming inconcievable with what we, as humans, know about direction. Mr. Maltin got disturbed and left the room, sending an employee to finish the video and take notes of everything happening up until the last second, and afterward immediately store the disc of the cartoon into the vault. This distorted screaming lasted until 8 minutes and a few seconds in, and then it abruptly cuts to the mickey mouse face at the credits of the end of every video with what sounded like a broken music box playing in the backround. This happened for about 30 seconds, and whatever was in that remaining 30 seconds I heaven't been able to get a sliver of information. From a security guard working under me who was making rounds outside of that room, I was told that after the last frame, the employee stumbled out of the room with pale skin saying "Real suffering is not known" 7 times before speedily taking the guards pistol and offing himself on the spot. The thing I could get out of Leonard Maltin was that the last frame was a piece of russian text that roughly said "the sights of hell bring its viewers back in". As far as I know, no one else has seen it, but there have been dozens of attempts at getting the file on rapidshare by employees inside the studios, all of whom have been promptly terminated of their jobs. Whether it got online or not is up for debate, but if rumors serve me right, it's online somewhere under "suicidemouse.avi". If you ever find a copy of the film, I want you to never view it, and to contact me by phone immediately, regardless of the time. When a Disney Death is covered up as well as this, it means this has to be something huge. End of Creepy-Pasta! There you go. Re-read it if you want. Basically, it speaks for itself. Mouse Gallery: Original Video Shadow's Verdict: Well, as interesting as it is. It's fake. The video WAS actually created by Walt (or at least 1 - 3 seconds of it) after Steam-Boat Willie. Of course, the video didn't have weird music or distorted mouses on screen when Walt made it. A 4chan user has most likely found the video, looped it and then distorted everything near the end. He has then (like Squidward's Suicide and Dead Bart) created a pasta so delicious I now feel like doing a second subject in the same day. But, yeah, it's fake. What would compel Mr Disney to make such a thing? Why would they even release it? Why? All these questions remain unanswered. So, sorry to any Suicide Mouse fans but it's FAKE! At least I'll know all the Mickey Mouse fans will sleep a bit better tonight. END OF SUBJECT #008 Special Note! Herobrine is coming. Check the schedule! And that's not all... *evil laughter*
Actually it might not be all that fake. Walt Disney was a master with subliminal images. He was also part of the Illuminati, and was a devil worshiper. His signature has 666 in it.

 • Ok, im still fairly young (14) so I think I can hear the "hidden frequencies" (sorry if that was not how you spell it), but I had a few interesting thing to note about it... 1. A low drone, easy to hear, but only during the video, noth the game. 2. Small, barely audible beat, with a tempo just slightly faster than a heartbeat. 3. The obvious distortion (?) about 3:12 interesting topic, but I am sure you have much better Creepypastas on the way. I will help in your Lavender town investigation, simply because it sounds interesting. Oh, and I could help with researching other CPs, but if it has to do with unlocking a file like the Girl, I cannot do. This is not my computer, so I do not wish to mess anything up. -TUP
