ODST not appreciated for what it is:

Recently, I've heard far too many unfounded complaint about the lack luster of ODST, that it isn't a good Halo title, or doesn't even deserve to sit with the other Halo titles. Hear me out, ODST is much more than the gameplay; other factors have to be taken into consideration. The Character No longer are we playing the role of a galactic hero; this time around, we're more of a human being than ever before. This different tone and sense of survival is fresh and relieving. Quite a few players disagreed with the decision to not implement Master Chief, but think about it: Chief has been exploited for almost all of his potential thus far and a new face was open up another aspect of a, generally speaking, linear in-game universe. It should be seen as a welcome choice. The Story Not to beat the dead horse, ODST is nothing like any other Halo game. You're not on a sole mission to save the galaxy, you're not the turn-to-guy that can't fail. Rather, you're in an relatively small world and you're only choice is to unravel the mystery of the previous few hours. Why was ODST's story valuable and intriguing? Because it brought to the table a more human element. The story brings you back before the Covenant landed on Earth, and explains the social tensions that proceeded the hours to follow. it shouldn't be taken for granted the venture Bungie took into their established anecdote. The Gameplay Putting firefight aside, ODST showed us that we, the players, can have fun without being a walking tank. Honestly, there shouldn't be too many upset with the gameplay, it still handles like Halo. In fact, the planning ahead notion put forth by the series is emphasized here as momentary choices seriously affect how the next arena would play out, much like Halo: CE What this also creates is an underlying understanding to the atmosphere that ODST aimed to create. The Music The somber mood given to ODST is one that is easily recognized by players and fans alike. Once again, keep in mind you're not a Spartan and the general Halo theme is not called for. Referring back to the emotion extracted in Marty's pieces, his work is shy beauty (personally speaking). With a completely new set-list, ODST defined itself from the other Halos with sax-solos and brand new orchestral pieces, traditional in his work. To wind down, Halo 3: ODST is, of course, a different and new new Halo. It deserves as much praise that's given to Halo 2; considering the well executed Character, Story, Gameplay, and Musical score, with a one-year development plan and the small number of hands recognized. ODST is not a game to be complained about. There's no real significant faults with the game, and remember that it's intent was essentially to be a larger Ad-On. •
Posted by: Maverick Hall2 I am a huge fan of the Halo Lore and I completely agree with the post! As a fan of the ODST character, not just the ones in the game, but the overall thought that the ODSTs, if not for Spartans, are the best Marines the UNSC have. I actually felt more bad-ass when I completed ODSTs story on Normal then I did Completing Halo 3s story on Legendary. I loved the paces the Story put you through and the game spawned one of my favorite characters, Taylor " DUTCH " Miles. No sense in droaning on about the game, when I could be playing it! Great Post and Thanks!
Funny, actually. When pondering what contributing factors lead ODST to be the great game that it is, I actually hadn't considered that Mickey, Dutch, Romeo or Dare would be credited introductions. I'm glad that you brought this to my attention.

 • I'm glad to see that there many of you who can sift through the garbage talk and truly relish in the game and the path it took away from Master Chief.

 • No Oblivion would be a terrible Co-op game so would Skyrim; when it comes out but were not talking about Elder Scrolls here.
Posted by: Sector Z 157 I am actually quite glad that there was no online multiplayer. You see, certain games are better left as a Story-line game. For instance, Oblivion. Sure Oblivion would have been great in Co-op, but online battles would have been very rigged.
• I just say people that don't like this game aren't a true halo fan. If they were a true Halo fan they would play for story AND game play.

 • People just really don't appreciate that the fact that Master Chief is going to be absent for a few years. I loved this game, and Reach for that sole purpose that your not a walking tank. Thanks OP, for fighting against stupidity, it's good to have you on our side.

 • ODST is one I thoroughly enjoy over and over again. I find it horrible that most people don't consider it a true Halo game, worse even a Bungie game. I loved the detail and faith to the Halo universe put into ODST. I even love the fact there's In Amber Clad chasing after Regret's Carrier, Sadie's story and even glassing 1st hand. The only two problems for ODST in my mind were: a, no multiplayer matchmaking for ODST and b, the should have been more levels to the campaign. Despite these, I still enjoy ODST and hope for a sequel/prequel/spinoff as a future game between the new trilogy of Halo games. Just wish people appreciated it more. Hell, even my bro, a devoted Halo fan. Doesn't really class it in the same league as Halo.

 • ODST had my favorite campaign. The story had so much more emotion and character to it, as opposed to the other games where you just commit Xenocide and save humanity. The way the story was presented and how we had to solve the mystery was great too. This game is really underrated. I thought it was well worth the $60, considering I didn't buy a single map pack.

 • recently I played the campaign on legendary with some friends just to find the audio logs and they tell a very dark story of the moment covenant set foot on earth and to understand it better you must remember that when regret flees earth in halo 2 midcampaign is the same moment the ODSTs are dropping in the city.

 •
Posted by: SEAL Sniper 9 I agree with this one-hundred percent. The thing that's sad...Not many people will see this, which is a damn shame. People have just forgot about ODST and moved on. It's very saddening, all things considering. This was a phenomenal game, but so, so underrated. I deserves just as much praise as any other great Halo game.
• I have to agree. ODST is a great game. It hits everything just right. Mood, lighting, that sinking feeling when a bunch of brutes start shooting at you. As MC, you just sigh and kill them, as the rookie, it's an actual test of skill. Love me some ODST.

 •
Posted by: Rainbow6King222 Nice thread but I think you could've developed what you were saying even further.
I would have liked to, but I find that once I begin to elaborate on things such a music or gameplay, I ramble. The viewer may grow tiresome of reading if there is a wall of text. That is why I kept the post short and simple.

 • I still haven't finished the ODST campaign, which I see as a real shame. I'm waiting for my friend to get it so we can do it co-op. I see it as a really good idea, in essence, and I just really like the game and just the whole thing generally, it just seems like a terrible shame that people don't like it. I also think the characters are really good too.

 • I still think firefight alone was worth the 60 dollars, its just people only played it for the 200,000 achievements. I usually pop the game in every other week just mess around in firefight or campaign, I mean the game still looks great and plays well.
