ODST not appreciated for what it is:

Recently, I've heard far too many unfounded complaint about the lack luster of ODST, that it isn't a good Halo title, or doesn't even deserve to sit with the other Halo titles. Hear me out, ODST is much more than the gameplay; other factors have to be taken into consideration. The Character No longer are we playing the role of a galactic hero; this time around, we're more of a human being than ever before. This different tone and sense of survival is fresh and relieving. Quite a few players disagreed with the decision to not implement Master Chief, but think about it: Chief has been exploited for almost all of his potential thus far and a new face was open up another aspect of a, generally speaking, linear in-game universe. It should be seen as a welcome choice. The Story Not to beat the dead horse, ODST is nothing like any other Halo game. You're not on a sole mission to save the galaxy, you're not the turn-to-guy that can't fail. Rather, you're in an relatively small world and you're only choice is to unravel the mystery of the previous few hours. Why was ODST's story valuable and intriguing? Because it brought to the table a more human element. The story brings you back before the Covenant landed on Earth, and explains the social tensions that proceeded the hours to follow. it shouldn't be taken for granted the venture Bungie took into their established anecdote. The Gameplay Putting firefight aside, ODST showed us that we, the players, can have fun without being a walking tank. Honestly, there shouldn't be too many upset with the gameplay, it still handles like Halo. In fact, the planning ahead notion put forth by the series is emphasized here as momentary choices seriously affect how the next arena would play out, much like Halo: CE What this also creates is an underlying understanding to the atmosphere that ODST aimed to create. The Music The somber mood given to ODST is one that is easily recognized by players and fans alike. Once again, keep in mind you're not a Spartan and the general Halo theme is not called for. Referring back to the emotion extracted in Marty's pieces, his work is shy beauty (personally speaking). With a completely new set-list, ODST defined itself from the other Halos with sax-solos and brand new orchestral pieces, traditional in his work. To wind down, Halo 3: ODST is, of course, a different and new new Halo. It deserves as much praise that's given to Halo 2; considering the well executed Character, Story, Gameplay, and Musical score, with a one-year development plan and the small number of hands recognized. ODST is not a game to be complained about. There's no real significant faults with the game, and remember that it's intent was essentially to be a larger Ad-On. • ODST may be my favorite Halo game. Because you feel much more involved, you want to hide from the enemies, you know they are dangerous, and the music, knowing that everyone in the city is dead.... You genuinely feel sad... But at the other side of the Spectrum, Lost Platoon is one of the funnest thing in halo, ever :P I think the best thing about it is that, like Halo CE, the enemies feel alien again, you feel like you are fighting terrible creatures from another world. • When I brought home ODST and played it for the first time I wasn't impressed. It wasn't until after reading several Halo books including the most recent book Halo Glasslands that I actually realized what a timeless novelty this game was. After reading Glassland I wanted to know more about ODST's and wanted more of an ODST landing boots in the mud from orbit or clandestine style Halo experience. I did the only thing I could think of. I went back and played through every ODST mission once more on Heroic for fun. I am now proud to say I finally get it. Others that "get it" about the ODST's uderstand what I'm talking about. For all the possibilities that Halo 4 now offers after gaining some insight after reading Glasslands, I expect to see much more from an ODST's point of view in the future, side by side with Spartan 2's and 3's. The possibility of actually playing as a spartan side by side with ODST's in game or vice versa in future game titles in the new Halo Trilogy is exciting. No spoilers but for all those excited about ODST's I reccommend reading Halo Glasslands ASAP!

 • I loved ODST. The only issue I had with it was its short campaign. I wanted to play as the rookie more than what the provided us! >.< Purupurupurupurupurupurupuru! ^.^

 • I persoanlly liked this game, but I do see why people get pissed at it for "not being Halo." It is a different pace from what the Halo trilogy is, doesn't mean it is a bad game.

 •
Posted by: Zoidberg25 Campaign - A nice change of pace for a Halo game. Firefight - NAILED IT. So much better than Reach FF.
Totally agree. The campaign is something any Halo 2 fan would've enjoyed. It basically was Halo 2's side story. Firefight was perfect. I don't know if it was the maps or just the gameplay in general, but it is so much better than Reach. Bungie ruined it in Reach.

 • I don't understand how people can ridicule ODST. Calling "Not a Halo game" is like calling Reach "A spark of genius". Reach is good, but the cannon of the series was warped and twisted to make it work, rather than fitting it in appropriately. ODST is a nice side story, and for Halo 2 fans it's a great way to see what happened when you, the Master Chief, left while chasing Regret.
Posted by: ShadowofConcept agreed i enjoy all of the halo series and to think that people are saying all that stuff about odst is sad i dont know any one who can make a game like odst in under a year and immediatley send out beta codes for reach it is just amazing
• I have to agree. Halo 2 will forever be my favorite Campaign based game, but ODST is a game of its own. It's a game that anyone can pick up and enjoy.
Posted by: Fatal Factor ODST is the most atmospheric game bungie ever made.
• What's so special about the ODSTs? The ODSt you are playing can punch Brutes with two hits, can jump ridiculously high, rip off turrets, can board vehicles and is able to destroy the hatch of a Wraith tank with blank fists! Yes, you even have a rechargeable shield called "stamina". WTF? Yeah, I know it was made to keep this game a Halo game we all know, but it makes no sense and never wil be. These guys are spartans, just in black armor. Nothing "human" or anything like that. It's not good or awesome, it's laughable.
The Gameplay Putting firefight aside, ODST showed us that we can have fun without being a walking tank.
I guess you played another game. What I just described is exactly that what you do all the time in Story or Firefight. Killing countless enemies and of course, the war between humans and covis relies in your hands since you have to get that engineer. Ohhh yeah, what a nice story..... It's the same stuff we did in Halo 1, 2 and 3. By reducing the story to a single planet in the universe, and not the universe itself, we still have the same clichee story from previous games. Not to mention these dumb and totally misplaced romance between Buck and Dare. "heh let's throw in an idiotic romance bewteen the two maincharacters cauz the story sucks." The detective story gameplay is also boring. The backtracking and level receycling is horrible! You play with the Rookie at night and later you are walking the same streets in a flashback. Oh yeah. That's so awesome seeing the same -blam!- over and over again. Oh, and "let's have ANOTHER Warthog race for the last level, like in Halo 1 and Halo 3 cauz we are running out of ideas". For the rest of the game I can only say that ODST is not an Add-On. It cuts way too much stuff from previous games. Dual Wielding, missing weapons like BR or Sword, missing vehicles like the Prowler and Hornet etc. An Add-On should expand the expierence not taking FUN things out. Only highlights are FF (in Halo 3 it would be much more fun) and the truely awesome soundtrack. ODST is just bad. With Halo Reach, worst Halo titles ever made by Bungie. Nearly the whole community flamed this/both game(s)...for some good reasons. [Edited on 10.24.2011 1:42 AM PDT]

 • I agree I think I'm right in saying they had little under ayear to come up with a game and they made this I was really happy with what I got it saved me getting the halo 3 map packs and the story and new modes were a added bonus in my eyes.
