Reference to start out my topic:
http://www.bungie.net/Inside/publications.aspx
Bungie has generated multiple publications and even featured articles on how to break into the gaming industry; the careers section is full of write-ups covering everything from art to engineering. These articles make great reads but my real curiosity is on the business side. I've asked for this before, but figured maybe it's worth another shot.
I understand that publications center around the core proficiencies of the publisher--sometimes they're even abridged versions of employees' theses or professional articles. Why has Bungie not put out any articles on company management from a business side? This may be a naive question, but is it because those metrics and methods are too close to the chest? Bungie has proven exemplary in the business of creating video games--is this not a worthy topic to advise and talk about?
I want an article.

That was a great read. Aren't you in luck a Bungie employee just so happened to be scrolling through the forums at just the right time to see and respond to your post!??
Posted by: DrBunsenHoneydew Take a look at Matt Priestley's talk on "Wrangling Engineers the Bungie Way". He's one of our senior producers and it's a great talk that should give you a pretty good insight into your topics 1, 2, and 5. Thanks for taking a second to link it. Edit: Ok, I take that back--it's exactly what I was looking for. Why is this not in article form and posted with the rest of the publications? This is golden for understanding expectations and the team environment of Bungie. [Edited on 06.20.2011 12:09 PM PDT]

Sorry for the triple-post but I wanted to respond to one more thing. Since when does business management have to be something stiff and boring for old guys? Young guys that are excellent server engineers have counterparts in business. I understand that the audience here is mostly interested in gameplay, but the articles aren't all about gameplay or related disciplines. It would be really interesting to see a piece comparable to what you would see in Fortune Magazine. A high-schooler can read fortune magazine and get excited; business stuff that gets the whole picture and showcases the collective genius of business leaders to make something out of the ordinary.
Posted by: Bob Bobinson Good question. I think it has more to do with the audience more than anything and the person who has to write it (urk). Do most people come to Bungie to learn how to break into the gaming industry? Not really. Most came for Halo and stayed for the weekly jokes. And those that do want to break into the gaming industry? I doubt they want to do so on the management and business side of things, especially considering that one could find a more profitable industry to work under anyways (i.e. banking). Still, an exploratory article on the business aspect of Bungie would be good to see. I'm just curious as to how urk would write it, considering he's never really divulged into it.
The first thing thing quickly discovered when you enter the workforce pool is that any job is better than no job. The second thing is that a job in the industry you desire is worth more than a comparable salary in a job you dislike. If you look at the other articles, Urk doesn't write them. They're written by the lead dude in respective disciplines.
Posted by: Telec Because company management is too generic. Bungie talks about video games in particular.
You're correct about my use of generic terms. To give you an example of specific topic underneath that umbrella: 1. Creative operations/process management 2. Personnel development and retention in a creative studio 3. Profitability on multimillion dollar projects spanning multiple years of development. 4. Funding and budgeting for video game creation. 5. Guiding a production team and controlling project timelines.

Are you speaking about their project management methods, tools and techniques?

Because company management is too generic. Bungie talks about video games in particular. edit to add: video games are interesting. Getting the spawns right, getting the art pretty, getting it balanced - all interesting stuff for us (given that we are gamers) However, even someone who loves business would get bored stiff by an article about the gate-reviews of PRINCE2, or the process of negotiating a better deal on the electricity bill. They give us bits and pieces of how things are run there, the picture of an airplane with features falling out, the board that decides what goes in a game and the pentathlons.
