this is just a thought which came to mind when i was watching starship troopers 2 where the Humans mobile infantry (whos uniforms bear a striking resemblance to UNSC ones) are fighting a seemingly unstobbable foe the bugs. but later in the movie its revealed that there is a new type of bug which uses humans as a host in a manner similar to the flood? any thoughts on this?

'Influenced by' not 'based on'.
-
Alot of Halo was actually based on Aliens.

Not solely on starship troopers but its obvious that it had a large influence on the storyline. It joins a huge amount of inspirational material; Ringworld, Aliens, Enders Game, religious material, the story of the ancient Spartans, Predator and so on and so on.
Posted by: Thugzz Deluxxxe I thought it was awesome. I thought the way it portrayed the borderline fascist government was a really good satire of our current government. And even today, the effects are incredible. It was a bit cheesy, but I think it was supposed to be. I loved it... the first one that is. the second one was garbage. I haven't even wasted my time on the 3rd.
Part of my disgust for the movie was the fact they used the Starship trooper name; the MI are supposed to be highly trained, well Equiped, nuke toting, power armoured Bad-asses, fighting an alien race that is an actual threat(Book bugs had nukes, lasers, and starships of their own. But what do we get instead? Pansy, hollywood tactics using, hip firing, soap opera wannabe macho-men who die in droves to giant bugs that Modern Earth could chew right through. A MI so retarded that the Bugs outsmart them, several times infact. Mind you the Bug hive mind isn't that good to begin with, and they still are capable of kicking humanities ass. If they had stuck with the original name for that movie then they could possibly be forgiven, but now? Damn you Hollywood, damn you.

The 2nd movie is terrible, but the 3rd isn't too bad. The first is, as always, a good watch.
Posted by: kit_103
Posted by: ZeroShift21 I apologise for my ignorance. Is it a good read?
Actually yes. Yes it is. If I remember correctly (it's been awhile since I read the book) it differs greatly from the movies. I suggest finding it and giving it a read.
Will do! Johnson must be based a lot on Apone though shirley? "I want combat city!"

double post! ARGHH! [Edited on 05.03.2011 11:48 AM PDT]

the first movie is rather decent, the second and third are terrible though!

In fact any setting that has powered armour and planet cracking nukes(book had nova bombs long before halo.) owes at least a little to that book. Nigh unstoppable aliens on the other hand, I will suggest you look up HG Wells. ;)

My simple answer is NO

Universal Soldier also would provide alot of material on the spartan program.
-
yeah but most books are ruined by the films. and im pleased that this thread acyually got a decent response rather than some halo Uber Geek just saying shut up theres nothing more to life than halo
-
Ever seen the movie Soldier starring Kurt Russell? So much there that could be used for the Spartan program!

I think the Marines are based on the marines from Aliens, and the ODSTs are based on the Mobile Infantry.

For the most part, yes. It's Larry Niven's Ringworld (a giant ring structure in space built by a long dead ancient race) mixed with Starship Troopers(Military led by and ominous and oppressive government heads out to fight a war against aliens). Throw in a little religious sub text (forget Starship Troopers 3, I mean the book) and BAM-you've got Halo. [Edited on 05.02.2011 6:45 AM PDT]
