Ok why does a MLG even exist? It has no relation to an actaul sport and it has nothing to do with being active, unless you count kinect. But still it isn't a "Mojor League" of anything, I don't know how anyone thinks or takes this seriously.

Here's something I used to post whenever we would get a "MLG sucks" or "Bungie should let MLG determine everything" argument. It may help to explain why the league exists in the first place.
There are 4 large entities in play whenever someone makes a topic like this. Confusing them, or assuming that some are the same as the other, is a dangerous path that will almost certainly lead to misunderstandings, arguments and raised voices. Perhaps I can clarify, though I am not holding my breath. First the 4 entities. In alphabetic order. * Bungie * Bungie.Net Community * MLG * MLG.Com Community Bungie and MLG are businesses. Both of them. They are organizations that offer either a product and/or a service. Bungie develops games, sells them, and provides the MM service. MLG promotes its players, its teams, its events, and other endeavors (merchandising, television contracts, etc.). These two businesses do NOT compete. Period. Bungie doesn't sponsor tournaments, promote players, or host events. MLG doesn't make games. Both companies are aware of their close relation and BOTH companies have to see that their own existence is enhanced (in one way or another) by the other company being successful. Enhanced. Not created by, not dependent on, and not due to. If Bungie (the company) never existed, MLG surely would exist. Likewise, if MLG (the company) never existed, Bungie too would be here. So, a topic of "Bungie -vs- MLG" has to either ignore, deny, or be ignorant of those facts in order to be said with a straight face. They don't compete. Bungie makes games. MLG promotes events where they have competitors playing off-the-shelf games, where the rules/settings have been modified to better work in the tournament setting, to highlight the focus and skills of their players, and to (most importantly) attract an audience who is willing to support, participate and watch the events. Allow me to make a parallel that MLG makes frequently. MLG wants to be (and some say that they are) the official and primary authority and body for professional video game playing. Much like the NFL, MLB, NBA, NASCAR, PGA and other bodies are the "official" body for their particular sport. Just like those other bodies, the game is the product, but the business is getting people to watch and to make money off of that audience. That's GREAT! If you ask me. It gives people who are interested a self-contained and officially sanctioned place to be entertained by watching (or participating) in their area of interest. But what about Bungie? Well, if we look at NASCAR, where the focus is taking something that many people do (drive a car) and ramp up many of the elements (speed, proximity, vehicle performance), eliminate elements that are not exciting or competitive (traffic lights, parking, gas mileage), and let the best of the best (within those new exciting guidelines) compete... well, people may want to watch that. So if MLG is akin to NASCAR, then Bungie is like Ford, GM or Dodge. They make one of the platforms that some of the competitors use. That platform is modified to suit the sport and other than some basic elements, it is completely unlike what someone uses to get to work. Because that is not what it is intended to do. So, do we see "NASCAR -vs- Dodge" arguments? No. Because no one is blind enough to think that they do the same thing or are competing against each other. It is the relative communities (and only a small percentage in each) that fall into this "my dad can kick your dad's ass" arguments. Are they silly? Oh yeah. Are they pointless? Absolutely. Do they have anything at all to do with what the arguing participants THINK they are attacking/defending? Not one bit. But why do they happen? I don't know. Maybe because people want to feel they are on "the side" of something they are passionate about. So passionate that they are able to see arguments and create divisions that don't need to exist. It puzzles and saddens me every time I see these pop up.
For the same reason the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB exist. Because people liked doing an activity, got really good at it and wanted to compete against others as good as/better than them. Adding cash prizes simply ups the level of competition.

It's for fun. What else? I myself like competitive gaming. My brother got me into halo, or gaming in general. He was placing in the same brackets as the top pros back in 06-07 for Halo 2 FFA and 4v4. He was among the best Halo players. I learned a lot from him and I eventually got pretty good myself, it's not fun playing against people who aren't good at the game, you need competition which is what MLG is for.

Sports are pretty much games that have evolved into a profession by try-hards, any questions? Gaming is at that point. Point: Sport coaches are try-hards which is why I don't play school sports [Edited on 04.29.2011 6:04 PM PDT]

Because competitive driven idiots like to pretend games are sport. I used to resent it but now I've figured out that as long as they are there they are away from me.
Posted by: Rambo Stu A sport does not require a person to exert massive amounts of energy. Anything competitive can become a sport.
That's a game. All sports are games, but not all games are sports.

i think you should define both "major" and "league" words, what are you a 2th grader?
Posted by: Affirnoo
Posted by: Elite_Buddy I just wish they'd release a PSA saying: 12 year olds are not MLG! Only using DMR/BR and Sniper does not make you MLG.
MLG is a noun.

I play Clanwars for Rise of the Witch-King (RTS game) and it's a lot of fun. Extremely skilled players there. It gets intense.

Major League doesn't have anything to do with a sport or activity. It's professional, it has a fanbase, and people enjoy it. A better question is why you care. [Edited on 04.29.2011 4:43 PM PDT]

Why are there sports leagues? Same question.. You are good in gaming, and you want to test your skills in competitive gaming where you can win money.
