I was just thinking back to Halo 2. While it was obvious that Tartarus didn't believe the Arbiter about Halo's purpose, I looked at it this way.
Tartarus actually hesitated when the Arbiter said this. Like he actually believed him for a second.
Has anyone noticed this?

I've always just assumed when Arbiter says "Tartarus the Prophets have betrayed us" then the battle happens Tartarus just thinks "The prophets aren't lying obviously this Elite, whose species have been lording their superior position over us for as long as I can remember, is lying to me." Truth had done nothing but try to raise the Brutes position in the Covenant, where as the Elites had done nothing but try to hold them down. The terrible ships, the inferior technology, the obvious political dominance. If he was going to believe anyone it would be Truth and the Prophets. [Edited on 04.04.2011 8:35 AM PDT]

are...you saying that h2 was acualy a second run through?

In Halo 4, Tartarus will reveal himself to be alive and command the Brutes to fight against the Humans and the Elites. The Master Chief must travel back in toime to 2012 to prevent Tartarus, who has also traveled back in time with the Covenant Fleet, from destroying the primitive Earth back then. In the end, Arbiter and Chief gains some help from the Heretic Elites from WAY back in h2 and assaults the brute Fortress on the Ark and Chief uses a Scarab to blow open the massive gate, then defeats Tartarus in single combat. realising that the Flood is spreading wildly, Tartarus finally agrees with the Arbiter to co-operate and destroy the Flood, by using the slipspace drive of the Ark to teleport the whole thing into the star of that system and the Covenant is finally united in the end, and the Humans have peace in their time.

I would say no he did not, it seemed like he considered it for a second, just by the way he phrased his response, but ultimately he refused to believe the truth, so no, he did not believe the Arbiter.
-
His faith was strong. But he did fail.
-
I'm guessing he considered it, but being lead to believe for your entire life that what you're doing will turn you into a god, well...
-
"You dare tell me about faith, uncle?" "You are obiedient [Tartarus]. I only wish I could have taught you the difference." Contact Harvest. Tartarus' faith was based around being a dog on a leash, Truth's right hand man. He was basically a Yes Man to Truth since he had all the power. Arbiter, at the time, didn't but he, Spark and everyobody else was showing him proof of Truth's betrayal. It may be he DID believe him for a fraction of a second, but blind loyalty--if not faith--kept him on Truth's side.

It's like that Star Wars scene were Darth Vader tells Luke that he is his father. Luke doesn't believe it at first, but later he takes it in. Unlike Luke, Tartarus just couldn't accept the truth.

-
as epic as i thought the line "the prophets have betrayed us" was, Tartarus must have disagreed.

I mean think of it as if you were a believer in God and all he believed in and an atheist told you about evolution and the reasons why we are here, you would stop think as well. I just wish Tarturus lived and we could have defeated him in Halo 3.
Yah, but the facial expressions and tartarus's overall intelligence over other Brutes seemed to make me think that he actually considered believing the Arbiter. I even went so far to think for a second that he would become an ally.
The way Arbiter said "The Prophets betrayed us" I instantly believe both the Elites and Brutes would join and turn on the Covenant, but I thought wrong, hey I was only 14 when I played Halo 2 back in 2004, can't blame my mind.
Lol. Me to. This was like a 2 years ago that I played Halo 2 completely through and thought this. I was 13.

Yeah, but after believing something for so long it's almost impossible to let go.
