The Bungie Waaahmbulance

Going through the Bungie mailbox can be wonderful - we get tons of great feedback, opinion and suggestions from a loyal audience who we love and appreciate. They ask good questions, make valid points and submit thoughtful and reasoned criticism. But we also get mails from folks who've been banned for cheating, modding, standby-ing boosting, bridging, and other forms of network interference, all bannable under the terms of use of Xbox Live which you can read about here. Now, the thing is, everyone who ever cheated, probably knew they were cheating. Some of the tortured language we get explaining that they didn't realize they were cheating is hilarious. • do it by MAC address would be better that way if you move into a house or apartment of someone who got banned you would have no problem. But MAC banning would also result in problems of xbox consoles sold to others. there really is no good way other than banning the accounts.

 • That was extrimley funny. Some of them did remind me of a friend who had his xbox and credit card stolen from his house and the guy used it to get access to his account and download a but load of stuff off market place. I remember laughing for days after he recounted his story and told about how he had to get a new xbox 360, and new live account and cancel his credit cards. He also called up xbox live support and had his old account banned. We still make fun of him.

 • Ok so do any ninjas or anyone know if you get randomly put with a cheater should you just call yourself lucky and accept the win, or should you quit as soon as you see them cheating? [Edited on 5/25/2006]

 • I admit it, I was the stoler :) Seriously Bungie, I have to thank you guys so much for the proof that you're trying to clean up the neighborhood. I stopped playing last August because of these kinds of people (the lawyers, the stolers and the grammar professors), mainly because every other game I played in was marred by cheating or screaming 4 year olds who just ruined the gaming experience, you have my thanks, and I may even renew my acount. Nah, I'll just stole that guys' again... ~Widget

 •
Posted by: Holyglory Wow Bungie if I may add to this bungie you have to take in concideration to the ppl on halo2 that bridge host to prevent getting cheated I am one of them I only bridge someone in my party host to prevent cheating I would never bridge host to stand-by or mod or another bridger to bridge someone out of the game I only do it so I don't get any of that done to me should I worry about getting banned because if so i'll probably just quit playing matchmaking although I like earning my rank honestly someone let me know please .
Yes, you are at risk of getting banned. Manipulating the network in any way (for any reason) while playing a game on XBL is a violation of the members agreement with XBL. Intent or purpose is irrelevant. If you are using tools to give yourself an experience that is different than the one that another player would experience when they use the system as designed, then you are violating the ToU and are subject to the penalties outlined in the membership agreement. If any player of Halo 2 on XBL encounters cheaters, modders, boosters, or any other activities that are considered to be exploiting the system, that player should; [*]Leave the game, especially if the violators are on your team. [*]Use the XBL feedback system to report negative feedback on the suspected cheater(s). [*]Additionally, you may: Send an e-mail to h2cheats@microsoft.com. [*]If you do send an e-mail, please include the XBL gamertags (yours AND theirs) and a link to the game record (easily found from your online stats and game records). Yes, quitting does carry a small penalty in loss of experience or possibly even the game. I know that the idea rankles many people. But by having all legit players leave, it leaves the cheaters on their own. It also clearly shows that the player who quits refuses to be associated (in a team match) with the improper activities, even if it means that they could have won. While it may "feel good" to assassinate or head-shot a cheater, in reality that does nothing to them. We want something "real" done to them, not an online kill that they respawn from. The automated systems are always being improved and they are constantly collecting and compiling data. Cheating is noted and logged, association with cheaters is also track-able. By having fair and legit players further distance themselves from the cheaters, it will make it easier to separate the two and discipline those who cannot seem to understand sportsmanship.

 • i think instead of banning their account, you should just ban their ip adress from matchmaking that way they can't come back and cheat. i think that would knock out a lot more cheaters.

 • Thank you Bungie for substantive proof cheaters are caught and punished (not that we didn't believe you, it's just so nice to see them suffer). And Juggala, unfortunately "deleveling" (while lame) is a behavior that is not cheating as defined by the "Terms of Use" so it will never result in anyone being banned. Or "baned" for that matter. :)

 • Its great to see that Bungie is able to poke fun at people who have been banned. What really burns me up about Bungie is that they claim they offer this great support from Microsoft but there is no way to get in touch with Bungie. The canned response from XBL support is to contact Bungie. Of course there is no way to do this. If you could tell me why I have been banned that would be great. I've tried everything to find out and I get the terms of usage. GREAT! That tells me how you can be banned but it doesn't tell me what I did. Like I've said before, look at my stats, I am so bad I don't even know how to cheat. What is funny is that the emails you posted about being banned did not address the ones like mine. You must have some percentage of error in your software (Banhammer). Sorry Bungie, HALO is getting to your heads now. I really can't blame you. I think its an awesome game. Honestly, I do not play it anymore because I still do not know why I am banned. I've shared my experience with others and let them know why not to purchase your game. Now I know 1 or 2 people not playing your game will not hurt your bottom line but it shows how you now become as insensitive as Micro$oft when it comes to addressing bugs in your software. Will I buy Halo 3? Who knows...

 •
Posted by: ratrace Several things become apparant to me from those letters: 1) The youth of today have a 4th grade grasp of the English language and have lost the ability to spell (or use spell check for that matter). 2) People are unwilling to admit guilt. 3) People that get banned are apparantly rich AND stupid. After having an account banned, you buy two more 12 month memberships and get them banned as well. Then you complain that MS and Bungie are stealing your money? Here is an idea, boycot live, don't buy Bungie games, hire a lawer and sue. This will keep you from cheating on live and suck ALL of your money away so you can't afford to buy memberships when you are finally willing to admit you are a F^&*ing CHEATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And flame me all you want, but WHAT THE HELL is bridging?
I'm not going to flame you buddy but theres this nifty invention made for the internet called a "Search Engine". It will search common web sites for specific keywords that you enter in the search box. One of the best search engines out there is Google. And if you're having trouble finding it just add a ".com" at the end of google. :) But seriously, LOL!! [Edited on 5/24/2006]

 • Frankie I love you! (In the most hetero-blam!- way possible) Those letters made my night. I have never laughed soo hard in my life. And to hear those goddamn cheaters squeel and cry made my day. Also, a word to all cheaters you are retarded, go to school, stop cheating (Well, now you can't), get a good teacher, and have your teacher teach you proper grammar!!! Holy crap! I know this is online and we don't care about checking your spelling and -blam!-, but at least have the decency to spell words as close to how they are supposed to be spelled and write you sentences so that smart people can understand them. My little brother is six and writes better than you pricks. Goddamn! Also, to that kid who said that he is tired of having his 12 months banned for cheating...... I thought you little cheating nerds were smart enough to use 2 month FREE trials!!! I'm happy that you just wasted 200$ on subscriptions and now you're broke and can't buy -blam!-!! Thank you Bungie for banning a lot of cheaters. Since you posted the thing about how 200+ of the most frequent were banned I have actually been able to play 2 consecutive (go look it up if ou don't know what it means) games without being cheated. Now I will allow you to retun to work on Halo 3 and banning those cheaters.

 • Hey Bungie, I just wanted to letyou know how refreshing it is to see physical evidence of your attempt to make Halo 2 a "cheat-free" environment. I think that this Weekly Update was very useful in uplifiting those of us who have felt the frustrations of being cheated or modded or bridged. I personally, have given up on the race to climb in rank, just as long as I find myself in fun games. Reading this weekly update was fantastic!!!! Thanks for your hard work. CHEATING.......IF YOU DON'T KNOW, YOU BETTER ASK SOMEBODY!!!!!

 • You would think people would at least type properly if they wanted to be unbanned for something they should be banned for. And that one guy who said that he only modded on one account so the others shouldnt be banned, what a tard. If you are cheating you should lose the privlige to play on live.

 •
Posted by: Evil Reborn The funniest one I thought was the guy who threatened to call a lawyer
According to the "Xbox Live Terms of Use" (that he agreed to to play and cheat on Halo 2) Microsoft (and in this case Bungie) may ban players from Xbox Live with or without any reason. Whoever threatened to call a lawyer, cant do anything about it. Also modders look up your system info. Xbox Live Terms of use: 17. CHANGES TO THE SERVICE; OUR CANCELLATION OF THE SERVICE We may change the Service or delete or discontinue features, games or other content at any time and for any reason. We may cancel or suspend your Service at any time. Our cancellation or suspension may be without cause and/or without notice. Upon Service cancellation, your right to use the Service stops right away.Once the Service is cancelled or suspended, any data you have stored on the Service may not be retrieved later. Our cancellation of the Service will not alter your obligation to pay all charges made to your Billing Account. If we cancel the Service in its entirety without cause, then we will refund to you, on a pro-rata basis the amount of your payment to Microsoft corresponding to the portion of your Service remaining right before such cancellation. Also if you look up your system info, you will see a warning that your Xbox is protected by international copyright and cant be modified in anyway. Modders will be punished to the maximum extent possible by law. [Edited on 5/24/2006]

 • Absolutely fantastic reading and the ULTIMATE cure for any previously suffered cheating woes. I have not had my level high enough to be cheated against very often, fortunately. But it is one of the most frustrating things on earth when it happens, and you DO want to be able to just ban your cheating scum opponents. Thanks Bungie for all your hard work in sorting out the cheaters, and in your ban policy. There seems to be a slight misunderstanding of the "cheating up to a rank 45" player - his point was that he earned it legit, then lost it because others cheated against him. He therefore felt (and you CAN see his point here) that he "deserved" that rank that he had only lost through others foul play. Of course, it is stupid and immature to then take the attitude "well, I'll cheat to get it back". Stupid and selfish. Its like F%*"$"£$ for virginity.
