The Bungie Waaahmbulance

Going through the Bungie mailbox can be wonderful - we get tons of great feedback, opinion and suggestions from a loyal audience who we love and appreciate. They ask good questions, make valid points and submit thoughtful and reasoned criticism. But we also get mails from folks who've been banned for cheating, modding, standby-ing boosting, bridging, and other forms of network interference, all bannable under the terms of use of Xbox Live which you can read about here. Now, the thing is, everyone who ever cheated, probably knew they were cheating. Some of the tortured language we get explaining that they didn't realize they were cheating is hilarious. • heh heh, I've been reading through the emails and stuff and that is funny, heh. Cheating should be given more of a financial penalty than a ban... That would make some people think twice. And if rich kids are caught cheating a lot, they might be paying $15000 a month just because heh heh. Now, that would be my take on cheating and punishment...

 • efiggy Yea I completely agree with you.... combining the 2 seems like it would be ideal. I have brought up my idea several times and I still havent gotten a reason why it wouldnt work. The only logical thing is that they wouldnt want to direct people over to this. But either way like I have said I would put priorities in order and these forums (atleast to me) are below cheating. They could shut this thing down and divert all of the people who moderate it to simply playing and running into cheaters. Last night I played DT for about 4 hours and ran into 16 players that were part of a cheating team... That is atleast 8 cheaters and more of them would be bannable because you could tell they werent random people joined with a cheater. It just bothers me that I believe that me and 5 of my friends could do 5 times what bungie has done with their banhammer if we had the ability to ban. Also you wouldnt need to be through and investigate. All the evidence is right before your eyes. [Edited on 6/1/2006]

 • Cadillac: Yeah, taking the whole "businesses need to profit" notion into account, I agree with you. However, if enough people get pissed off and quit playing Halo online, or worse, refuse to renew due to cheaters, that would also hurt the business. It's kind of a "damned of we do, damned if we don't" sort of situation, but something needs to be done. Playing Halo 2 online used to be fun, but recently it's been nothing short of frustrating. That's the reason why I personally haven't played Halo 2 in a long time now. I don't think that my sister and her boyfriend are even using this account anymore either. The Banhammer has helped out a bit, but, assuming that your data is or is close to the real deal, your idea is definitely damned more effective. It's a good medium between something weak like the Banhammer and something a bit too extreme like my idea. If I were to make my idea a bit more lenient, we could use your method, and couple it with this: When the users get enough Xbox Live accounts banned, their Xbox EEPROM and hard drive serial number get banned (suspended) for a couple months. If after their suspension they get banned again, then their Xbox and hard drive are banned permanently. Then let the cheater flock to X-Link Kai and see how quickly they get banned from there too, or let them buy new hardware. ;-) The idea is that a cheater may always be a cheater, and if they get enough accounts banned then they lose their privilege to play online for good. Using your driving example, if I accumulate enough tickets my license gets suspended. If I keep getting ticketted, my license gets revoked. ^_^ [Edited on 5/31/2006]

 • Efiggy: Your idea is good, however, not so much for a business standpoint...atleast I dont think. I dont think your idea will ever happen simply because of the number of users that the community would lose. This means less money renewing, less statistical evidence that XBL is prospering, etc. A good idea but IMO not a feasible one. My idea is simple.... it works like real life. You can speed at 90 MPH and you may never get caught, but one day your going to drive by that cop and get caught. Having some so called online 'policemen' would almost certainly slow down the problem and very possibily end it entirely.

 • Hmmm... lets see if you got banned, you violated XBL terms of agreement... Lets see.... BUNGiE ( a branch of microsoft) Bans people from matchmaking. I dont think that a branch of microsoft would make such a mistake so please stop whining, if you cheated, cussed, or yelled consistantly, you have probably gotten banned. Still denying it that you did nothing wrong? I'll tell you guys the secret, you see XBL has secret meetings and invites about 1,000 random legit players, and we decide on one poor unfortunate soul that we are going to hunt down and leave bad feedback to. It happens every week. Will you be next? Also there is more than one XBL game, you may have gotten negative feedback in another game... so why yell at BUNGiE???? Or did you actually play dirty in H2 you MONGREL, but BUNGiE smashed your face with the BANHAMMER and you can't believe that you got caught. So naturally you B*tch to BUNGiE. Yea, but I give you guys props, I used to play innocent 24/7 too when I was younger and my parents caught me doing something wrong... good strategy, never admit your guilt. I wish people like Everyone else in the world including OJ SIMPSON thought of that one. Good Job BUNGiE H3 will break the PS3 (if it doesnt break when you turn it on)

 • For all the people that have gotten banned for no reason.... SHUT THE FU*K UP! Hmm let me think here, yes BUNGiE is banning people from matchmaking.... wonder why... you cheated, I dont think that BUNGiE ( a branch of MICROSOFT) would make such a mistake as to ban this many people. Also if BUNGiE didnt ban you and XBOX Live did, and you still didnt cheat, and you still say you dont talk trash, well then you must be one of the most unfortunate souls on xbox live that everyone dispises , so they leave bad feedback just to -blam!- with you, cause you know that everyone on XBL hates you , we have secret meeting and pick out gamertags " Hey guys lets mess with this kid today, that will be funner than actually playing the game..." You guys are losers that have violated terms of agreement... And it's funny... there is more than one XBL game, ( meaning more than H2) but yet you guys still b*tch to BUNGiE if you get banned from xbox live... that must mean you were doing something wrong in their game?? Think about it guys... Use your brain. Or does someone have to put a modchip on the back of your head to give you an I.Q. above 60?

 •
Posted by: Lord of Deimos
Posted by: I Cadilllac I I could have stopped cheating long ago (go ahead and laugh at that statement)
Will do. XD
I knew someone would be a smartass so just tell me whats wrong with this... my plan for no cheating.... Okay first lets review bungies way...The banhammer. Last I heard they had caught 3200 people to date (that was a few months ago). If that continued they would be at around 4,000 cheaters to date. If anyone knows the exact figure then let me know. Now we can look at my way... I have determined that in two hours(which is also close to what I play every day) of play I will normally encounter 4 cheaters (this is from actual data taken..not just my assumptions). I have played Halo 2 online practically every day since launch. Halo 2 has been out for right at a year and a half today and I think that we can all agree that only the first 6 months of the game were legit (probably less). So with just me banning the people that I have played I alone would have gotten 4 cheaters a day for 365 days. So we can do the math and say that 4x365= 1460 cheaters to date. Now lets see what Bungie could do if they used my method. First off if they closed down these forums and just used the moderators to "police" the online community. Say they only diverted 5 moderators and worked them 8 hours a day for the last 365 days. 8 hours=16 cheaters 5 people x 16 cheaters x 365 days = 29,200 cheaters caught to date Now lets do that same math with a team of 20 people (which still isnt a big team) 20 x 16 x 365 = 116,800 cheaters caught to date. Im tired of bungie trying to stop it from a technical standpoint rather than just policing it. Im tired of them posting stories up trying to act like they are or have done something. They have posted stories of how they are stopping cheating for a long long time now and as a player I have had noticed no changes in the amount or the extent of cheating. They either need to leave the issue alone and focus on H3 or they need to stop it. They have half-assed it from the start and are continuing to half ass it now. It is astonishing to me the praises they are getting for what they are doing against cheating... PEOPLE LOOK AT THE GAME AND TELL ME WHAT THEY HAVE DONE? Great cheaters standby me for 2 seconds rather than 8...does it matter?

 • Cadilliac: It's exactly the reason why I stopped playing Halo 2. More and more people are cheating. I'm happy that Bungie has caught a lot of people; this was the first time I had ever seen a public display of some of the childish responses that came in from the people who were banned (I saw it on Slashdot). But you're right: for those few thousand people they've banned, there are thousands more playing this "my -blam!- is bigger than yours" game by cheating their way to the top. And based on my experiences, the number of cheaters is growing. It's exactly why I introduced my little "ban EEPROM & hard drive serial number" idea. Under that suggestion I made, you wouldn't be able to use a two-month trial or buy another subscription to Xbox Live until you forked over the cash for another Xbox/Xbox 360 (or clean EEPROM and clean hard drive, if you could find them). Or, you could switch over to using something like Xlink Kai. Either way, we'd see a sharp decline in cheaters simply because a lot of the cheaters out there are burning up their two-month trials or spending money on new subscriptions. And come to think of it, with those 7 day trials you can buy (or however long they were, I forget), that loophole becomes something larger. Banning EEPROMs and hard drive serial numbers (mostly) closes that loophole.

I was only a member of Xbox Live for three days before I got, "permenatly suspended." They never told me what I did or anything. [Edited on 5/29/2006]

 • Pay close attention to this I just wanted to say that everyone is rejoicing for some unknown reason and I wish someone could explain to me why. For a long time Bungie has ACTED like they are getting the best of cheaters. Well congrats bungie you showed us 10 examples of people you caught and I would say got the best of. But you havent done a damn thing about cheating. Your banhammer has gotten what, about 4,000 people to date? Again congrats.... I still get cheated one of about every 3 or 4 games and cheaters still have a monopoly on the levels 34-50. Im just getting tired of reading these articles about what Bunige is doing and hearing everyone sings their praises when they havent done anything. For everyone telling bungie how great they are...get online for an hour an play and see if you get cheated...then sing their praises in that game. I could have stopped cheating long ago (go ahead and laugh at that statement) But either way turning over this cheating problem to me couldnt be ANY worse then what it is now.

 • i don't think that is a good idea couse if u don't get banned for modding or anything you can buy a new x box couse someone over here made a mistake or if u are playing with more players on a box and one gets banned for having a big mouth then youre screwed

 • Well met, Frankie! I haven't been playing Halo 2 for a while because things were getting annoying with all these little script kiddies. Plus I've been working full-time and am in college so yeah... busy! Anyway, I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the forum, but I was thinking about something: I know it must be great for all those little kids to burn their parents' money up by buying new accounts when their old ones get banned -- why not ban their Xbox hard drive serial numbers and/or EEPROMs? That way they would have to buy a new Xbox if they wanted to ever play online! What do you think? I had quite the laugh by reading those emails... the "lawyer" one was great... oh so "professional". What are our schools teaching today that the next generation of kids can't seem to use proper punctuation or anything? Geeze! [Edited on 5/27/2006]

 • Those were so funny. I was laughing in my head the whole time. Yeah Me and my fried were playing Team Snipers and I had just got my Lvl 20 and this guy on the other team uses mods and we lose of course and then it went back down to a level 19 again! If I can remember his gamertagI would tell you but I can't. He used auto Aimer and he could control our spawn point and times I was so annoying! I hate modders. If they can't win without using mods then they should live with the fact that they suck, have no life, or stop playing and ruining it for everyone else.
