If you die you can load the check point even with iron skull on by hitting start and going to save and quit. You will be back in the campaign lobby were you just hit resume. I died many times and did this to load up to the last checkpoint many times in a row, not once did I have to sign out and sign back in.

Yes, just Save and Quit. It wont work unless you've reached the first checkpoint though.
