Bungie + College recommendations.

Does anyone in the community (Or Bungie) know if Bungie gives College recommendations? Say I was going to work for Bungie in the future, and I wanted to go to a college (say DigiPen) that gave me a degree in my design. Would I be able to get a College recommendations from them? (Just curious)

  • Well...I am at GMU for CS. They do offer many game design courses since they have two Game Design Majors. Both are applied degrees. One is a BS and one is a BFA.

  • Well I heard from one of my friends who's cousin works there, that you shouldn't ever go to Full Sail University. Here is what my friend told me that his cousin said. "People who went to Full Sail to get a degree for working in gaming industries crash and burn."

  • Do you mean you want Bungie to tell you which college to go to? Um, someone just posted that the college doesn't matter. It is what you have learned, and how you present yourself. [Edited on 03.25.2011 9:53 PM PDT]

  • Doubtful. And we don't even know what position you want to work for. If a position opens up similar or the job you want, look at the requirements for that position. And you will most likely will be required to have years in the industry experience before Bungie would hire you.

  • How... how in the world would you expect Bungie to write you a recommendation? You use their forums. They have no idea if you have talents, work ethic, etc. [Edited on 03.25.2011 9:48 PM PDT]

  • Guys I don't think he means a written recommendation letter. Not a 'letter of recommendation.' Just the opinions of Bungie Employees as to which college would be the best choice in the interest of a career at Bungie. [Edited on 03.25.2011 9:44 PM PDT]

  • People obviously don't get what you're asking lol. Any state school with a good CSE or graphic design/art program depending on what you want to do would be fine. It's up to the student do actually get the most out of his/her education.

  •
Posted by: Deathtrap462 No, they most probably do not give out college recommendations to random people on their forums, nor would they hire someone not yet in college, I'm sure.
•
Posted by: Halo biggest fan (say DigiPen)
DigiPen. No, seriously. Unless you're looking to go into a traditional college, maybe University of Washington, or something with a really good record in computers. A degree isn't going to get you a job alone, though. This may help,
Posted By: Achronos Sometimes I'm on those interview loops. But, more generally to answer your question, in no particular order: - Technical ability (know your stuff COLD, be able to talk through it and do whiteboard work on demand in the interview) - Proven history (have a portfolio that shows me what you consider your best work - make me believe that your skills are as good as you say you are) - Team fit (this is hard to describe, but it generally is the job interview of "plays nice with others") You'll note that "where you went to school" doesn't fit in on there. Bungie is a meritocracy, applicants are therefore judged on their merits for the position, not the assumptions one might find around education at a particular university. Where you go to school isn't nearly as important as what you learn (and, to a lesser degree, did you finish what you started). You should go to the school that you think will be educate you in whatever areas you find yourself lacking in - be it technical ability, follow through, teamwork, etc. An example - I said I went to Virginia Tech, but I was also accepted to Carnegie Mellon. CMU is routinely ranked as one of the best Computer Sciences universities, and they were just starting a new human computer interaction focus there when I applied. But I elected to go to Tech, because I hated the CMU campus. I'd wager that I learned more in my time at VT because I found the environment way more comfortable than the one at CMU. So, really, be sure that you go to a place that serves you. I'm someone who puts a lot of value on enjoying what I'm doing - life's too short to spend 4 years at a place you hate just because some rankings say it is "the best". This is especially true when the name on next to your degree isn't necessarily that important in this industry. Know what you need, not what the college rankings of "best schools for this career" say. They may be right, they may be wrong. Be sure that you're looking at more than just the surface of your choice.
•
Posted by: pwnageincarnat Get a college recommendation frorm your teachers. Bungie isn't going to hire you if you don'thave a degree, and wouldn't write a recomendation for someone who isn't an employee.
ouch!

  • Guys he's asking for you to recommend a college for him to go to, not a college recommendation. He wants to go into the gaming industry, and wants to know a good college for said career choice. Talk about misinterpretation.

  •
Posted by: Halo biggest fan Okay maybe I should re-word this. To get a degree, I need to get into college. To become a employee, I need to have a degree. So I'm asking you if they would be able to give me a college recommendation to help me get a degree so I can work for them.

Bungie won't write you a recommendation because 1) They don't know you enough or at all. and 2) Bungie doesn't recruit like that, or at least not from pre-college students.

We understood...get recommendations from your High School teachers, Bungie will not. Are you simply asking for a recommendation as to which college you should go to? (Usually, "college recommendation" refers to a teacher writing a recommendation saying that you are a good student, blah, blah, blah, good for college, etc.) [Edited on 03.14.2011 5:30 PM PDT]
