I'd be awfully surprised if this hasn't been talked about before but the "Winter Contingency"?... Why is it called that? Is it because it's winter or something when it comes or is that the classified name? Either way I think it's extremely silly.
The Winter Contingency sounds more like that lame play your mother takes you to around Christmas.
"and now ladies and gentlemen, your entertainment tonight... the Winter Contingency!"
I love Reach but this name choice was just weird. Anybody else think so?
Posted by: AxJARxOFxDIRT Winter Contingency = WC = Worst Case (Scenario) = the Covenant finding Reach which could directly lead them to Earth. Considering this is an actual military term and given what it means for Halo: Reach, I don't think it is silly at all.
I still dont care what it actually means. I mean the word. Winter? WINTER contingency? I dont care if it's a code, it's still weird. Oh, and no one likes a smart-ass. "Considering this is an actual military term and given what it means for Halo: Reach, I don't think it is silly at all." And what it means for Halo Reach?... it's a game you nut.

Well, its a contingency plan, named after the last season in the year. Possibly because the descent of a Covenant fleet marks the end of the planet, like how the fall of snow marks the end of the year. I'm not sure what contingency means, but "winter contingency" sounds pretty cool to me...
Posted by: Corrupt Chaste
Posted by: tsujen The level is named after WINTER CONTINGENCY, a UNSC contingency plan that is declared in case Covenant forces have discovered a UNSC colony world. Indeed, the first evidence of Covenant ground activity on Reach is discovered in this level.
Ok, well I kinda figured that some fanboy (this is NOT an insult, I consider myself a fanboy -if I've got the definition right-) would know the technical answer to this question. But do they tell you in the game that this is the reason for the name? If not how would the average player know? Also, why does everyone call it -THE- winter contingency? why wouldnt they just say "we have a code - winter contingency-" or maybe "it's a winter contingency situation". But to be honest what I really wanted to know is if you thought the name was silly -regardless of the meaning technical or otherwise-
I am not a fanboy, in fact I am fairly new to halo. I knew why it was called Winter Contingency because I watch the cut scenes. It has been awhile since I have played the campaign but I'm pretty sure they say what winter contingency is. I could be wrong though and maybe a friend of mine told me or something. [Edited on 03.12.2011 2:27 PM PST]

Still gotta answer my question! Do you think it's a silly name -regardless- of the meaning. Yes or no? = P

I'm sure there is some reason to it being the Winter Contingency but as far as you can get from the campaign in reach that is just the name it was given.

I think of it as winter is the end of the year. So it's kind of a last-shot thing.
