I'm just guessing, but did anyone remember the Remember Reach ad when we see Kat's arm get destroyed by the banshee fuel rod? My guess is that the fuel rod blast caused a glitch in her armor's shields, which is why she died when she was shot in the head. Anyone else think this or have any reasons how she died the way she did?
EDIT: Someone said EMP pulse. Probably the reason her shields didn't work. Anyone else got a good guess? Also, people are saying that there isn't a reason. That's not exactly what I'm trying to get. I'm just asking people what they think caused her to die (using real-world knowledge or canon material).

In the book there are no Spartan 3's on Reach, they're still training at Onyx until it gets interrupted where they're stranded & can't escape on the planet because sentinels are trying to kill them, in which the Covenant also comes so they retreat in an underground Forerunner complex. They wear SPI armor, which has no sheilds but it has constant camoflauge, & I'm pretty sure Phantoms (vehicles) are even bigger on your motion sensor, so she wasn't paying attention. It's her fault, and she looks like a guy from behind.
-
I think it was a beam rifle prototype.
-
the arm thing and Thom's death happened on a different planet. She might not have powered up her shields after putting her helmet on. or maybe bungie was just in the killing mood, and the writers were out to lunch at the moment.
Posted by: SoulTyger I could probably explain that one. Anyone seen Saving Private Ryan? In the beginning when the Tom Hanks and the others are getting blown up and you can hear a ringing noise? No one except Six and Emile had their helmet on so it probably blew out their eardrums and caused a similar effect (something like that).
That would be an excellent reason... If it wasn't for the fact that Emile, Jun AND Carter were facing the Phantom. I just fail to see how the Spartans wouldn't be watching for enemies.
Posted by: SilasO51 regardless of the reason, Kat's death was one of the worst of any Spartan (Joshua and James being close contenders)
mmm I think Sam's death was pretty pointless and terribly written. Kat dies because only the emotionally compromised characters die first; they are more tragic. Jorge was obviously a big teddy bear, so it was really really sad, and next to a big emotional guy a crippled chick is next- being female, the reaction is to protect her, and having failed, the payer gets a whole slow-mo cutscene and the world ends (the city is destroyed, they're fighting a battle already lost). Poor writer's attempt at emotional depth. All the males get better send-offs; just IMAGINE if Carter had died right there instead?

She was rushing, because sheilds make you run slower,so she was rushing really fast.

This thread should end with the following explanation. It is the EMP pulse. The huge explosion at the end of the New Alexandria level was what caused their shield systems to essentially become fried. Remember how Kat was reciting the radiation she detected outside the building? She was measuring it with Roentgens. A Roentgen is radiation unit related to the ionization caused by X-rays or gamma rays. 1 R is the X-ray/Gamma ray dosage that produces an ionization charge of 2.58 & 10^-4 Coulombs in a kg of dry air at standard temperature and pressure. I believe that at one point, Kat was saying something around 6M roentgens. Thats a lot of -blam!- radiation out there if you ask me, more than enough to wipe out any kind of energy shield out there in the Halo universe (might be a bit of an exaggeration, but yeah you get the idea).
Posted by: TURTLER9 there was no emp. where is everyone getting the emp idea from?
Plasma generates an EM field, and when you have a LOT of plasma you get a very big EM field.

Kat wasn't wearing her helmet when she got shot. Not only did the EMP blast knock her shields out but, if her shields were working, they wouldn't have been charged before she was shot, since she had just put her helmet back on. This allowed the needle to penetrate her helmet, and kill her.

Instead of trying to explain why she died, how about this: They just gave her a bad death. Probably wanted to combine it with the sorrow from the planet getting glassed and that big dramatic scene at the end of the mission. Answer: There isnt a good explanation, Bungie just has mean writers = P
-
I don't think theres a "guess". I'm pretty sure it's a fact that it was due to the glassing.

I think it WAS the EMP that took down her shields. But she should have heard the phantom coming in the first place anyway. Dumb b1tch. [Edited on 03.03.2011 6:05 PM PST]
Posted by: zapzap09 Perhaps the elevators were manually operated? I don't know.
Manual, in that there's a team of marines with a block and tackle hoisting and lowering the thing? No, I don't think so. A plot hole opening in Kat's shield layer is much more plausible.
